For those of you considering going, just for your information and safety, here is a short security report produced by the V's black ops section:

Panama is the safest country in Central America by far, and is a hub for lots of major international businesses and NGOs. Crime of opportunity still exists, so make sure to keep an eye on your stuff and not leave your wallet in your backpocket or purse/cell phone etc lying around on a chair, table cause someone can just come by and snatch it. Panama City is really safe in the day in tourist locations and is not that bad at night either but it is always better to travel in numbers and not alone, especially when consuming alcoholic beverages. Be suspicious whenever a stranger approaches you for something as this can be a distraction in order to steal something from you when your attention is elsewhere. It's best you use licensed taxis and not just any random one you find on the street. Don't carry too much money in your wallet and leave unnecessary credit cards at home or in your room safe box.

Here are some interesting stats on Panama:
    Population: 3,510,045 (July 2011 est.)

Ethnic groups: mestizo (mixed Amerindian and white) 70%, Amerindian and mixed (West Indian) 14%, white 10%, Amerindian 6%

    Language: Spanish (official), English 14%
note: many Panamanians are bilingual, so watch what you say

    HIV/AIDS - adult prevalence rate: 0.9% (2009 est.)

    Major infectious diseases
    degree of risk: intermediate
food or waterborne diseases: bacterial diarrhea
vectorborne disease: dengue fever and malaria (2009)

    Unemployment rate: 4.5% (2011 est.)

Population below poverty line: 29% (2011 est.)

    Homicide rate: 17th in world (2011) 20/100,000

Another flight option is Air Transat out of Toronto or Montreal.
Toronto to Panama City ---> Mon 10th to Mon 17th for $613 all in
Montreal to Panama City ---> Mon 10th to Mon 17th for $723 all in
Sometimes Air Transat has good last-minute deals so these prices may drop.

DontPanic seems to have organised an amazing trip though. Sooo jealous. Wish I could go.

I am in. Land Only, because I'm going to stay a few days later to explore Panama and scope out my retirement plans.
