A younger version of Rochat? Hmmm. That has worked out well for us. Hope he works out for you and at that age lots of upside. Do you know how much he played for the Swiss teams? First/Second team?
Dennis Iapichino young left back, 21 year old from Switzerland. Iapichino began his career at Swiss Giants FC Basel, and was later loaned out to FC Lugano where he was a teamate of Felipe Martins. Could this be the left back the club has been looking for, since the departure of Mauricio Vincello (USL era)?

The club also traded much-maligned Justin Braun (native of Salt Lake City) to RSL for a 2014 conditional draft pick. Great guy, too bad things didn't work out for him at IMFC.

He was a starter at FC Lugano of the Swiss second devision.

Except that this guy was released by a second tier side at age 21 while Rochat was playing Champions League with Young Boys at the same age before signing for Rennes at 22. Not much comparison besides position and nationality, I'm afraid. I will agree, though, that Switzerland seems like a good place to draw MLS players from. Swiss players have brought some flair to the game here and usually haven't looked out of place.
Martins seems to have stepped right in, so why not this guy? Good for MLS to raid these troubled leagues. Could do wonders for our player pool. Count me as one who'd pay good money to not watch Jeb Brovsky. I'd suggest upping the international quota to a more reasonable 10-12 to take advantage of Switzerland, Scotland, Romania, etc. It's hard to sign younger players like this unless you know they can challenge for a starting spot right away when you only have 8 spots to play with.
since 1974
Comparing Iapichino to Rochat is a stretch. Rochat has an excellent resume, and came to MLS later in his career. Iapichino is different in that he's coming here to build on his experience by playing in a different league, which might propel him into bigger oportunities in the future. Felipe Martins played a huge role in bringing Iapichino to IMFC. That's all I need to know, as Felipe is an early candidate for Player of the Year with IMFC, and has been outstanding. Lets hope it's the same for Dennis.
Why was Braun "much maligned"???
aka, Bettermirror.
Because he is probably not a good enough player for NASL let alone MLS. One of the worst players I have seen put on the Impact jersey even including the A-League days. Not only did he not score but he regularly cost us goals through his passes to the other team and other various errors. A complete absence of any technique or soccer skill. The only thing he offers is size and decent speed for his size.
Brovsky in contrast while he should not be our starting LB is not quite as bad as advertised (although I still disagree with his selection in the draft). He has some skill but is prone to making bad decisions and could improve his positioning at times. He also lacks some speed to recover when he makes errors. On the other hand he has improved during the season and if he could improve his positioning and decision making with experience he might eventually be a decent MLS fullback. At the moment he is a decent backup fullback who would be fine to stick in if you don't have any other problems in the backline. I certainly hope Iapichino is an improvement over Brovsky and can win the starting LB spot but unlike Braun I don't think Brovsky is totally useless to the club. Plus, you have to love a guy who at a time when the league and club are getting on our ass for doing pyro and creating atmosphere makes a statement like he does at 0:45 of this video (the video also shows our 10th anniversary tifo).
With Iapichino starting today why has Valentine been moved to the bench with Brovsky at left back? Wasn't the whole point of signing Iapichino to upgrade on Brovsky, especially after Valentine scored that huge goal against Columbus in the last home match. Seems like a bit of a strange decision from Marsch.
Marsch can be very hard to understand. Brovsky has done a decent job, but I prefer Valentin.
