Default England progress to 4th in FIFA Rankings

Try not to snigger but whats the point?

Only thing that makes sense is that the current England side are marginally better at parking the bus than Portugal. But to be honest neither side is top 5 quality in the world.

    ...are they?

The ELO world rankings tend to be quite accurate and even they have England 5th:

Hard to believe after watching them at the Euros, but there it is.

    Yikes!

Well it is a points based ranking system so I'm going to figure the flurry of matches this past calender year has influenced the rankings of the UEFA teams but 4th? Have to say I'm surprised.

See Holland dropped 155 points. Guess that happens if you **** the bed royally in public.

Also see that Canada picked up 17 points and 9 positions to sit in 68th. Meaningless rankings in the real world but a bit of good press leading into the fall.
For it's a grand old team to play for.

It is all about the recent qualifying campaigns and dropping values of the world cup runs. South American teams haven't been playing as intensively and there is much greater parity in the home-away matches, so its harder for teams to stay on top during qualifications. Whereas Euro qualifying isn't really as 'equal' except in a few cases for the top teams... but because its within the european division the games are weighted more heavily.
Trying to keep up with the Reds, while following the azulgrana of Buenos Aires.

I would maybe give Portugal a top five moniker. Besides extra time where the team completely shut off, they played Spain stride for stride and were slightly the better side.

Snigger is the only reaction one can possibly have to this! (I am sniggering now)

Let's not lose sight of the fact that England's record at the Euros was Played 4, Won 2, Drew 2, Lost 0.

Beat Ukraine at home and Sweden, both good wins, and drew with France and Italy, no shame there.

The only reason we all think that 4th is a bit high is because the performances were unconvincing, but rankings are based on results, not performances.

I think you're onto something. A more observational, heuristic method needs to be developed for these rankings.

To be fair to England, considering their build up going into the summer they probably got to the point where they should.
They are hard to beat but they do lack a level of ability to hold the ball when they have possesion. Not that they will ever play like the Spanish or Italians. Its not in their make up or psychi. Playing like the Germans However? surley thats a goal worth attaining.
