Thread: Voyageurs Cup or Playoffs?

  1. #1

    Default Voyageurs Cup or Playoffs?

I'm not trying to get people fired up, but just want to gauge opinion out of curiousity. Please don't turn this into a partisan thread. But would you rather your club won the Voyageurs Cup, or made the playoffs? Furthermore, how does the Voyageurs Cup compare to the MLS Cup for the three Canadian Clubs.

I for one think the Voyageurs Cup is superior to the MLS Cup because it gains qualification to the Champions League, and this is how we can move a club 'to the next level.'

Seeing as we are out of the V's Cup I'm sure the playoffs are more important.

Seriously you should ask this question before the season or V's cup games start. I'm kind of biased now and probably all the Impact and TFC fans are as well.

I would take the V Cup. As a first year team in MLS I didn't see Montreal having much of a chance at the MLS cup while winning the V Cup would have brought some interesting Champions League matches to MTL. Going deep into the Champions League is very exciting as TFC is well aware as well.

I voted "Playoffs". I have commented on this in the USector forum. Unfortunately, some topics are better to discuss in local fan forum. problem with this site is, as you said, lack of objectivity by some.

Anyways, i say that making the playoffs (and or excelling in league play) is much better measure of your club's true form and quality. The reasons are that your opponents will not always have the same priorities and place the same emphasis on CONCACAF CL or the V cup. In the Concacaf CL you are going to see:

    1) Some Clubs that are so small that they operate at level comparable to local semi pro sides such as the CSL.

    2) Some clubs (such as other MLS clubs) that get very very tiny attendances for these matches, and hence that ends up having a direct impact on the effort they put into it or the importance they place on the competition. So beating them may give you a false sense.

    3) The in season and off season sched's vary greatly. Its totally different when you watch a Mexican side in the late summer or fall versus the one you see in winter or early spring. Their competition run on winter sched and this reflects their form and quality.

    4) Under an MLS structure, you can ultimately only go so far in CCL. You will never have the squad depth to rival the Mexican sides because of the Cap in MLS .

I like the bragging rights of the V Cup more than play offs. But i am more confident of a squad and satisfied in a squad that makes the play offs. Making the playoffs is food; winning the VCup is candy.

Edit: one of the very good things about V Cup/ CCL is that it gives a lot of developing Canadian players a some immense experience and playing time. And, against the kind of opposition and playing conditions that they would face as national teams member (should they ever reach that point). thats invaluable for Canada.

Indeed, asking now that we know Toronto FC is the Voyageurs Cup champion is just asking for partisan decision-making.

(I've gone on the record saying I'd prefer the Voyageurs Cup before, sadly, so I can hardly wiggle out of that now.)

I suppose now might be a good time to bump this thread. The three Canadian clubs are 5-1, with the only loss being to another Canadian Club. Things are looking great, but it begs the question: What does Voyageurs Cup success mean to you, and how does it rate in comparison to MLS? For me, the Voyageurs Cup still should be the top priority.

Might be better to start a new thread to have a clean poll with everyone's thoughts before the VC begins.

Yea I'd agree. As to the question I would like the V's cup because we haven't won that one. I would really like that thorn removed from my foot.

However for the clubs I'd have to say make the playoffs. If the Caps don't make it this year a lot of fickle fans will just dump on them. The sports landscape in Canada is crowded and fans can be fickle. In my post to the "hopes for 2013" thread I stated that I want all 3 MLS teams to make the playoffs. I still think that is the most important thing for soccer in Canada (short of making the World Cup or a medal in the Olympics).

The WC & Olympics are once every 4 years but the playoffs are every year. It makes great press and most North American fans associate a playoff team with a team worth following.

Also agree. And not to taint the poll, but the reasoning being that, at the time, that poll was tainted because TFC's season was already in the dumps, so TFC fans only had the V-Cup to look forward to at that point. So I think the V-Cup might have got more votes than normal? It's still super important though, I'm on the fence, I love CONCACAF Champions league, and I can't get enough soccer so I'm starting to watch mexican soccer on tv just to get more of my fix in.
