Wow, I'm very much in the minority in preferring the first one. I guess I associate the whole red-and-white checkers scheme with some other country that is not Canada.

Also, and I assume this is obvious but I'll say it anyway, hopefully the "rest-of-flag" red colour matches the "Voyageurs logo" red colour.

That was my initial feeling too. But the second one just looks better.

Flag company is 2x3 or 3x5. Canadian flag is 2:1. It looks wrong.
