Henry was the best player on the pitch for the U23 game including the opposition, which included some of the leagues best attackers. Can't believe Harden and Maund see the pitch before him.

Henry was absolutely fantastic for Canada yesterday. His passing from the back could have been improved but he wasn't alone for Canada there. Henry should get slotted in immediately upon his return.

Take the Canadian blinkers off James, JDG only started playing well last season after Frings arrived. For a DP who's cost TFC $5m+ over the length of his contract he's been an absolute disappointment. I wish we'd never signed him and I'm sure he wishes he'd taken that 1 year contract from Espanyol or whoever, De Guzman, TFC and the CMNT would all be better off

Henry can be very good for TFC (CCL game at Dallas last year) but can also have a stinker (at Real Salt Lake last year). He's an 18/19 year old CB, it's to be expected. I'd rather play him than Harden because you Henry as least has the potential to be a consistently good CB, Ty Harden, at age 26, does not.

Heathen - considering how short soccer careers are I imagine JDG is loving his bank account, isn't wishing he took the Espanyol contract....also if for no other reason he can build a retirement package while also playing at home!

JDG has not been an unmitigated disaster. He hasn't been great....but he is only responsible for TFC's defending to a degree and his role is not to score goals or create them soo......

A mitigated disaster is hardly what you'd want from a DP though is it?

Frings was brought in to be the player that JDG was supposed to be. The knock on effect of that is that the excess money spent on JDG's salary this year against the cap couldn't be used to sort out the defence.

It seem that the team has a lot of cap space/allocation funds tied up with three DPs and then I think they probably had to use up some significant dosh for Plata and Eckersley (just speculation on my part there). So you are left having to fill the roster with affordable and effective journeyman role players: hopefully you get more hidden gems than busts. As for de Guzman, as much as I like his skills as a linking midfielder (he has received too much extreme criticism or excuses for his play here), in my opinion his cap hit as a DP isn't worth the trade off of acquiring better proven squad players, and that affects the whole structure of things.

(sorry BBTB, you beat me with your more succinct response!)

Was there any scouting? That's not rhetorical btw.

    That didn't work last year.

I'd like to see more of Emory. I thought he looked fairly composed against a very good Seattle attack. Not sure who to pair him with but it does seem more than a little early to give up on Aceval.

And this is a general statement not aimed at you but: has 2010 been airbrushed out of TFC's history?

All over the place since yesterday the litany has been about TFC "never" getting the defence sorted. Under Preki though we had a stable centreback pairing that looked the part and seemingly gave us a base to build from. I went and looked at the stats and that defence had only given up 27 goals in his 24 (league) games in charge by my count. That's not championship form by any imagination but it's respectable and that's better than we've come to expect.

Of course Preki was fired - the only TFC coach to have that happen to him keep in mind - when the offence collapsed when Barrett was hurt and DeRo went cold and even conceding only 1 or 0 goals wasn't enough to win games. Apparently fans couldn't take the dour defensive soccer. We then proceeded to give up 14 goals in Dasovic's 6 games in charge.

Since then Winter was brought in with the explicit brief to produce "attacking possession based soccer" because that's what the board of MLSE decided Toronto's "educated" football culture demands and I've been forced to read a ton of internet opinions that Cann and Attakora aren't good enough on the ball to work in "the system". Yet both of them are gone (for different reasons) and TFC continues to leak goals (and chance after chance that isn't taken!) when a DP midfielder isn't there to babysit.

I really, really, really hate blaming the fans and adding agency where it doesn't exist but sometimes we get what we deserve.

Lol, still seeing stuff through my 'angry glasses'

Although if you don't think Piqué would help the back line I think you are mad :-D

Not going to happen b/c he has a 200m Euro buyout clause...

IMO 'star power' is generally overrated.

Who were the hardest working guys on the pitch yesterday?

    Not the two DP's...

I like JDG, I just think we can quarter his salary and bring in another DP OR more high quality non-dp players.
