    Guidelines for this thread

    • In this thread post match updates on all Canadians abroad for February 24 - March 1, 2012.

    • If you find updates posted in some other thread or on the other Voyageurs forum then post them here as well, but be sure to credit the original poster.

    • If there is news that is particularly significant (eg. someone scores a big goal, someone gets injured, etc.) then feel free to begin a new thread on that topic in order to draw greater attention or start a discussion, but also post that news here.

    • Some comments on news posted in this thread are okay, but let's not let this thread go off into a long discussion. Sounds like he had a forgettable match according to the fans' players rating FWTW:

"Edgar - 6 - Bad error for the first goal, although others should have done more to mitigate it and it was a consequence of playing out of position on the left of the two centre halves. Used the ball OK as the game progressed."

Sums up the comments. Was he playing LB?

Big Kev was caught ball watching on the first goal as the man he was marking scored the opener. The cross/set piece (i think it was a corner, but i might be mistaken, i saw the replay as the ball was being crossed in but from the marking it looked like a corner or FK) was driven to the far post where it was headed back across the area to the near post and headed by a Leverkusen attacker off the inside of the post. The rebound fell in front of the open goal and Kev's man scored. Also, at minute 33 he had the ball stripped which led to a dangerous counter attack for Leverkusen. In the 44th he did well to cover for his partner and snuff out a breakaway.

Like I said, you can take the comments for what they are worth. I was under the impression that he was the left CB, with Duff (voted by some there as the MOTM) as his partner.

He was more or less at fault on the second goal as well. The guy who had the ball deked out the midfielder a bit but the midfielder was in a position where he could recover. Kev, however, goes towards the ball carrier and puts himself in a position where he couldn't do much of anything since he can not take a man and is not pressuring the ball carrier either. Another attacker runs behind Kev into the area he just vacated, the ball carrier passes him the ball and he is alone on the keeper and scores.

And you are right on the first goal he just watches the ball and does not move to a useful position where he can negate any attacker. Indeed watching the ball is a particular bad habit of Kevin as you can see in many of the goals this year for which he bore responsibility. What makes it even worse is that he is not very fast and his anticipation of what is going to happen is often poor. Plus, as you can see in the 2nd goal, when he gets beat he stands and watches the play instead of busting his ass to get back. Considering the nice finish he would not have been able to stop goal number 2 if he had hustled back instead of stopping and watching but had the finish not been clinical he was in no position to prevent an attacker getting the rebound.

Kevin also had a poor game last week in Koln's loss to Nurnberg. Kicker rated him a 5 which is quite bad and I suspect he will get a similar rating this week. Kevin is effective when he plays in a compact style of defence like he did with Cottbus but he is really lacking when the defending style is more open and he is facing speedy forwards who can pass. It is a bit worrisome considering that many of our CONCACAF rivals play that exact style.

Don't know how long this video will stay on Youtube but here are the goals: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sjaNAEICuNE
