NCAA, CIS updates

Sigma FC has been reporting on its university players every week. Some good results this past weekend, as three players set up game winners for their clubs. The big result was Boston College over Virginia Tech. Kyle Bekker set up the winning goal in a 4-3 win

Univ. Report: Week ending Sept. 18

BC is ranked No.11 in the NCAA. They play No.2 ranked UConn on Tuesday. Huskies have three Canadians on the roster (Toronto's Jonathan Goodridge, North York's Allando Matheson and Richmond, B.C.'s Flo Liu)

Rookie Allando Matheson scores again for #2 UCONN and rookie Jordan Murrell who has started everygame for Syracuse, scores against #16 New Mexico.

If I were a U.S college coach you better believe I would be raiding TFC's and VWFC's academies every year. There are absolute studs in these programs that could turn any school's program around or help take it to the next level. If I were Syracuse's coach, I would be drooling. Sadly non the of the yank coaches take notice.

I think I was in the minority when I agreed with that York U coach who was pushing to get the CIS in the MLS draft. A lot of the users here thought it made no difference if they were draft eligable considering they can get "trials" if they are good enough. However, they forgot to look at all the variables. If CIS players were draft eligable, the short term impact might be little, but the long term ramifications would be significant. The quality of the CIS would improve considering potential players would know they can make their way to MLS through that avenue. A lot of the talented kids would stay over here and compete in our university/collegiate system.

I played CIS soccer from 2001-2005 at a perennial powerhouse and I feel not a single CIS player would be taken in an MLS draft. I just don't see the talent level as being high enough. Just look at past CIS player of year recipients and what if any professional career they've been able to move on to. I don't think it's because they can't get any looks, it's because they're not good enough.

Hence, why I said it would do nothing for the short term. You have to look at the long term impact.

I see what you're saying. However, I think the goal for the best players in a non professional development is always going to be the NCAA due to more factors than just a potential MLS tryout (ie prestige, college experience, a full ride scholorship etc)

Perhaps. Those are valid factors as well.

Mississauga's Emery Welshman, transferred from Siena College to Oregon State.

By all acounts it was a good move for him.

Good stuff. I checked his stats last week and he was only on 1G 2A at the time, so he has almost doubled his output (now has 2G 3A).

Daniel Tannous subbed on, then off and back on for UNC against Duke last weekend. The game was on FSC, so it was shown on FSWC here in Canada. I was surprised at the calibre of play, much better then the handful of NCAA games i've seen the past few years. Tannous seems to be a regular sub for UNC - who are among the top teams....
