Thread: Sidra could be the answer

Default Sidra could be the answer

If there was one area that represented a true Achilles heel for Toronto FC in 2010 it would have to be the fullback position. While TFC were exceptionally strong between the sticks and possessed three quality centre backs in Adrian Cann, Nana Attakora and Ty Harden, only Dan Gargan really delivered consistently satisfactory performances as a fullback. Nick Garcia provided experience and held his own in quite a few games, but generally his lack of pace and athleticism was something that opposing offences were able to exploit over and over again. Maxim Usanov and Raivis Hscanovics were consistently ineffectual to say the least.

...a regular back four of Sidra, Attakora, Cann and Gargan would be a huge improvement over the quartets that TFC regularly fielded in 2009.

While I like what I saw from him, I'm not sure Sidra being seen as a replacement at full back is consistent with the criticisms of signings like Usanov and the Latvian. Sidra has very little experience at the pro level (I'm not even sure if he has played games in the B2) and is clearly an unproven player at this point. He has talent for sure but I'm not sure I would rely on such a player if I was TFC GM. Probably a good signing but shouldn't be seen as a starter IMO (but could turn into one).

It would be great if he could get a trial to set how he matches up with the current talent.

Sidra might be the answer. I tend to favour North American players for defensive positions in MLS, simply because they require a little less ball skill, and a little more intelligent play and physicality, things which I think our players are very capable of. The unfortunate reality is that our country doesn't produce a great number of talented midfielders and strikers. Hopefully the academies will rectify this.

But I think Sidra could be a potential man for the left back position. Another thing we could do is look at potentially getting Straith on a loan and playing him at right back.

Sidra has very little pro experience. I like what I've seen of him but I don't know if I would bet the house on him being starting 11 in the MLS.

Gargan was crap at fullback. Kick the ball out style. At least Garcia is able to make a pass to his teamates.

I think TFC should at least give this guy a tryout during offseason no harm in that
