" Is Jonathon De Guzman angling for a return to Canada?"

I'm at work so i can't listen to the podcast. When you say "Return to Canada", do you mean playing for TFC or the Men's National Team? ...or rehabing his leg injury in Canada again?

^ Ben, Duane and Squizz suggested that there are whispers floating about that JDG2 is considering committing his international career to Canada.

This isn't particularly shocking because it is simply VERY difficult to earn a full senior cap with an NT like Holland. They have tremendous depth in the midfield and likely always will. If JDG2 aspires to have an active international career, casting his lot with the country of his birth rather than the country where he has grown up would make some sense and I would not begrudge him for making that decision, if it happens

If he changes his mind and plays for Canada i would welcome him back. It'd also be a nice story that he and his bros. try to lead Canada to the World Cup.

I'd also imagine there could always be some favourtism towards Dutch-born (then Surinam-born!), not matter how good JDG2 is. I'm thinking if De Jong gets sat for playing for Canada then unless it was absolutely necessary would they cap him.

I heard this on the podcast as well. I wish they would be a little more specific about these "whispers". From what I can tell it seems to have originated from a question put to Jason de Vos during a CBC Live Chat about whether he would welcome JDG2 back into the Canadian team IF he decided to change his mind about playing for the Dutch. I can't find anything in the press or blogs even speculating that JDG2 is actually opening the door to a return. Did he or his brother post it on Facebook? Is this from an "unnamed source"?

About JDG2, if nothing become concrete from now until the beginning of the next WCQ, then I suppose this rumor would have been a false one.

I don't think this originates from Facebook or JDV's Q&A session on CBC.ca.

I think this would amount to informed speculation on the part of certain people in the soccer community. I've personally heard those kinds of whispers myself but there are no hard facts to back it up at this time (as far as i know). However, there are hard facts that could fuel this informed speculation:

    a) JDG2, while supremely talented, has stagnated a tad due to injury and is not the wunderkid he was 2-3 years ago.

    b) he did not get called up once for any WCQ matches where he could have been cap tied in a meaningless game, leading people to wonder if Holland's technical staff really see him as part of their future.

    c) it is no secret that JDG1 and JDG2 are very close and you can be sure the older sibling continues to remind the young sibling that the door remains open if he is willing to reconsider

    d) FIFA's rule change has kept the door open for Jono to consider making the switch.

You never want to be anyone's fall back position but Canada is not in a position (in this fickle socer world) to be so choosy. Getting Jono to "come home" (so to speak) and maybe lining up Junior Hoillett would be a major injection of quality and youth into a side deseperately in need of those qualities.
