He turned out to be a bit of a dud, didn't he?

"The 22-year-old joined the club on August 15, 2008 signing as a free agent.

Smith appeared in a total of 14 games, three of those as a starter. He compiled 418 minutes, and one assist."

Would this be to free up salary space for a potential Gerba signing?

Elsewhere on this site, there is a link to an item on Birmingham City FC being interested in talking with David Edgar "when he returns from his holidays".

David's home is in Kitchener-Waterloo. He has been released on a free transfer from Newcastle.

    The plot thickens.....

Short answer is it might well be obviously (although it wouldn't be a huge amount as he was on 45k against the cap so freeing up a senior roster spot could be the bigger issue) but it could also be a case of him being let go before his contract becomes guaranteed through to the end of the season. The deadline for that is usually the end of June and in the final analysis is he providing genuine depth to the squad right now or is he just making up the numbers at the moment? I would say the latter. To get Gerba on I suspect a larger contract than Smith's might have to be moved out as well so this may not be the end to the roster changes.

Rumour elsewhere from people who normally know what they are talking about (e.g. the apparent confirmation by Jack DePoe of RPB) is that Ricketts is gone and Gerba has already been signed:-

If this pans out in the next day or two it's worth noting the same source says JDG to TFC is a strong possibility.

    ^Where's the insight?

Ricketts is a grand fellow, but you didn't need a crystal ball to tell his days were numbered. Simple math tells us it wouldn't be enough to allow for Smith & Sutton's wages alone to cover bringing in Garcia & Gerba. Not even close if I can correctly guess what Ali G wants in compensation. So where is the next logical place to find a quick $100K or more from a bench player?

As for The Guz, if TFC and MLS are willing to approve a million dollar contract there may be something to talk about. If they are not, it's a dead end issue. Jules has way too many options.

I could imagine The Guz taking a punt on a brief MLS contract, but I wouldn't waste a nickle betting on it. But then again who knows? If at this point he came to Toronto for a year or two I'd be surprised, but not entirely stunned. But first and foremost the money would have to be right.

Not sure what the insight comment is all about. Just passing along something that people who don't post/lurk on the RPB board may or may not find of interest. Only thing to bear in mind beyond that is that allocation money can be used for up to 50% of a player's salary and TFC had copious quantities of that in the off season courtesy of Edu's transfer etc. Given all the details are kept secret on how allocation money gets used in trades and in contracts people who claim to know how much allocation money and/or cap space is left at this point either have a very good inside source or are simply making stuff up to make themselves look knowledgeable.

Lots of speed, but never seemed to know what he needed to do & where he needed to be once he got on the field.

^ Another athlete who doesn't really know how to play the game. Sad thing is i thought there might be something to him when i saw him play for the US U20's in their 4-1 win over Canada in Ottawa. On the fourth goal, our D gave him way too much time and space as he made a strong run into the middle off the wing and let a rocket rip along the ground inside the near post.
