The friendly opponent is finally announced:

Toronto FC will play host to one of Argentina's most storied clubs when Club Atletico River Plate visits BMO Field for the annual Carlsberg Cup.

The July 22 game marks Toronto's fifth international visitor, and its second Carlsberg Cup opponent.

ugh. no disrespect to Argentinian football but they couldn't find another club? How about a Brazilian club? how about a Turkish club? Galatasaray might make the trip.

To each his own. I would much rather see River Plate than a Brazilian team.

Either way, I can't wait till Vancouver are in MLS and we can cheer against teams like River and Corinthians. I used to dream of just seeing teams like that play, but to actually have a team to support while cheering against them...I can't wait for two more years!

<sarcasm>Yup, I agree. Argentinian club football is crap!

River Plate has to be in the top four of club teams (in terms of overall prestige) in the Western Hemisphere, along with Boca Juniors, and a couple of Brazilian clubs.

River Plate (great team by the way) will be playing on turf then? I find this a bit hard to believe. They don't have the money of the big ten in Europe, but they still can't afford to have a star injured due to BMO.

do you even like football [?][?][?][?][?]

How on earth does anyone complain about seeing one of the world's most famous clubs, especially if you're a TFC season ticket holder and it is at NO EXTRA COST to you.

I hate meaningless friendlies in mid season but this is a very attractive fixture if you love beautiful football and don't want to be bent over by MLSE (like you will be bent over to go see Real Madrid). Even though River is struggling badly in the Primera, they're still River Plate.

They've bounced back from their bottom of the table finish in the Apertura, they're currently in 5th place in the Clausura. Not that i like River very much, i'm rather fond of Boca Jrs. (who are nursing a post-title hangover).

I'm kind of bummed that DishNet is being scrambled, i haven't been able to watch the Argentine Primera on Fox Sports Espanol in months...

So what exactly is the significance of the Carlsburg Cup, aside from an international friendly at no extra cost to season ticket holders?

Great, now Mo doesn't have to go to South America for a scouting trip

The match is being sponsored by Carlsberg....and that's about it.
