Default Vote: CSL winner as 4th team in V-Cup?

To me this is a cut and dry issue. I would like to know if other football fans feel the same.

Should the First Place finisher in the CSL take part in the the V-Cup/Nutrilite Canadian Championship?

Quite frankly I can't believe they aren't already included. Not only do CSL teams offer very sturdy competition, they are recognized by FIFA as Canada's soccer league.

    Your votes people? Thoughts?

    "YES" = In
"No" = leave the V-Cup to the USL and MLS squads.

That's a YES vote from me.

    No.

Not yet anyway. There should (and probably will be) a qualification for all the 3rd tier teams to fight it out for a spot but it should not be limited to a regional league like CSL currently is.

Do you feel that the International Division is "tribal"? Is that the problem? I suppose that's a valid point. Although a lot of the "international" teams have players of other ethnic origins. I do agree that "international" teams, based solely on one ethnic origin, do not represent more than a certain segment of society. They don't represent a city. This is a good point.

However, in terms of quality of play - are CSL squads no match at all for USL or MLS squads? Would a CSL team not be able to give the Caps, the Impact, and TFC a run for their money?

Perhaps in c. 2011 once the CSL has hopefully created a new Western division: Winnipeg/Calgary/Edmonton/Saskatoon/Regina/Vancouver(?).

That way it would no longer be a "regional" league? I'm assuming you live in a province other than Quebec/Ontario. I'm a westerner myself (only been a couple years in Ottawa) and I fully agree that any league (in this case the CSL) sending teams to compete for a CANADIAN championship, should have teams across the country.

My question: the CSL is a very grass-roots organization. It's an excellent venue for friends/groups/small business owners, to create their own teams, at a very low cost and potentially make a run for the cup! When the MLS has no relegation system, and the USL still costs 750,000 for a franchise, how can bob and joe make it to the big leagues? Or do they have no business being there in the first place? Should we trust that TFC Academy, Whitecaps Residency, NCAA Combine etc. will catch all the future stars. Are there not many players, especially in Toronto, Montreal, and Vancouver that fly under the scouting radar? Perhaps they fled their country of origin due to an outbreak of war or famine and two years before have played in their nation's premier league. How do they break back into the beautiful game at a professional level?

I would like to see a qualification process established so that semi-pro / senior amateur teams could compete for the V's Cup, if they so chose, provided they can put up a bond that guarantees they can cover all the costs that would be associated with participating in that tournament.

I have suggested the re-establishment of a Canadian Open Cup or creating a special division at the CSA's National Championships that are open only to the semi-pro or amateur teams prepared to make the commitment to trying to qualify for the V's Cup.

^ Baiting the wrong guy numb nuts. I am the last guy that would want one of those teams representing Canada. Can I also assume something? That by your ignorance of English punctuation you are a fan of the Scarborough Screaming Serbians or some such Balkan tribe.

    No. I'd vote no.

I think it would be bad for the level of competition on the field and for the perception of the quality of the tournie (as a whole) off the field.

I also have serious doubts that a CSL club would in any way make any money from the competition (it's not like the tournie has gate revenue sharing, prize money from the CSA or broadcast revenue) and what is more would be an awful draw in the other teams parks.

And Gawd forbid if a CSL club did win the V Cup could the team participate in the CCL without heavy subsidies? Great, wonderful, nice story if a CSL wins the V Cup but they'd rob one of the professional sides of a potential serious run in the CCL and the moneys that would come with it. I don't think any of our pro-teams are rich enough yet to turn their noses up at the marketing value and the real revenue which Montreal has shown this winter can be got from CCL.
