I can't find the article in the on-line edition but on the front page of today's financial post there's a story on Rogers getting approval for the creation of Sportsnet 2. 90% of its programming will be soccer, rugby and cricket. Hopefully this means we'll never have to see a world cup qualifier on tape delay ever again.

Sportsnet putting out a sports channel? No!
Isn't this the proper Setanta channel partnered with Rogers vs the current "ppv" Setanta international sports pack
A new channel will in no way guarantee that Canadian games will be on. The problem will remain. The networks feel that the cost of producing a live event does not justify the effort. They can't recoup the cost through advertising because the ratings aren't good enough.quote:Originally posted by CanadianSoccerFan

The resaon Sportsnet shows so much poker isn't because poker gets big ratings. It's because it's inexpensive to put on.
Live sports are neither cheap to put on, nor are they cheap to buy the rights to.

If you pay attention to the article 2010 is a date set by the CRTC by which the channel must be operational otherwise presumably Rogers licence will be revoked, it is not a Rogers planning date.quote:Originally posted by Loud Mouth Soup

I pay $20 for Setanta Canada now from Shaw, and $20 USD for Setanta USA from ITVN. Setanta cost 10 pounds in England. From what I understand the 'current "ppv" Setanta international sports pack' is co-signed with Rogers. If you want that high level of programming its going to cost that much.
The article mentions the Asian market for sportnet 2. So look for J-League and K-League games on tape delay, with a highlights show of the BPL. Throw in all that cricket that FSWC use to fill their schedule with, add TFC games, and maybe the one BPL game that sportsnet currently hold and you have Sportsnet 2.
On a side note anyone notice that FSWC doesn't have anything worth watching anymore? I mean I understand that they lost the alot of their tv rights. But would it be too hard to show maybe three different argentine games instead of the same one three times in a week? I guess the same could be said for Gol and their Mexico and Colombia games but they actaully have a fair amount of content.
Jeebus, someone seems to have pissed in Richard's salad tonight.
Is fun not allowed on here anymore, Richard?
Not really Pilt... with the pack you're paying for the games and the games only... when it becomes a "proper" channel.. you'll get the weekly highlight shows, pre/post game shows, various magazine shows etc..aka the fully rounded out channel. No more of the 1hour of straight next games on Setanta screen just sitting there.
That is of course is if Sportsnet 2 is Setanta, which people who follow CRTC believe it to be. The interesting part is where does the Can-Con come from.
