Default Argentia vs canada friendly and argentina champion

Just for anyone who is curious this was the argentina team that play canada in that friendly in may

Argentina: Emiliano Centeno; Juan Daniel Forlin (83’, Jorge Sotomayor), Gabriel Mercado, Diego Braghieri y Marcelo Cardozo; Leandro Morales (83’, Nicolás Dul), Matías Sánchez y Leonel Vangieri; Alejandro Gómez (71’, Federico Scoppa); Santiago Malano (57’, Milton Joel Caraglio) y Jonatan Chaves (57’, Facundo Coria). DT: Hugo Tocalli.

and this is the argentina that won the world cup

    ROMERO Sergio 1
    FAZIO Federico 2
    INSUA Emiliano 3
    MERCADO Gabriel 4
    BANEGA Ever 5
    SANCHEZ Matias 8
    ZARATE Mauro 9
    (C) AGUERO Sergio 10
    SIGALI Leonardo 14
    (-93') MORALEZ Maximiliano 17
    (-80') PIATTI Pablo 19

    Substitute(s)

    ESCUDERO Damian 11
    GARCIA Javier 12
    VOBORIL German 13
    CABRAL Alejandro 15
    GOMEZ Alejandro 16
    DI MARIA Angel 18
    ACOSTA Lautaro 20
    (GK) CENTENO Bruno 21
    CAHAIS Matias 6
    YACOB Claudio

Interesting to see that only 3 players from that team made the roster for the under 20 national team... These just indicates how far back we are from world class level.

A single friendly game won't say much anyways.

Canada tied Brazil prior to 1994 Gold Cup. And it was the full Brazilian side which went on to win the cup two weeks later. But the tie did not mean that Geoff Aunger was world class. It was just one result on one given day.

Back in May, Argentina was probably playing around with their line up. For all we know, some of the players crossed out may have been as good as the ones that got to play, but were removed due to injury. Others may have just marginally got cut.

BTW, comparing Argnetina and Canada would not even be fair. Their U20 team dominated this tourney in a way I have never seen a team do. They controlled almost every game with the exception of the final and even then, when they decided to take over, they did it. I have never seen a team have such composure and such control at will. The Mexican game was the perfect example when they just scored a goal and against one of the best teams in the tournament, they just decided drop back and killed the game.

Very few teams will ever reach the level that Argentine U20 did in this cup, if any. If we can even raise our game to the same level as US or Mexico, that would be good enough.

Worth noting as well, that the Golden ball winner in the last U20 WC, L. Messi, was still eligible ( age-wise) to partake in this event.
