How is it determined which of the third place teams plays where? For instance, Burnaby will get the group B winner (likely Spain) versus a third place team from A (Canada?), B (Gambia?), or D (Brazil). If two or even all three of those teams qualify as third place teams moving on, which one plays where and how is this decision made?

Very good question. I had assumed that there would be only one way to arrange the third-place teams in the bracket, but that is not the case. So I checked the rules and there is a table that specifies the Round of 16 matches depending on which third-place teams qualify. I have added this table to the first post above. Thanks for pointing this out.

don't know how to work the HTML codes but here's more crossed out combinations, as Brazil are now guaranteed second round because their record will always be better than Costa Rica (just barely) and Korea DPR, so any combination without group D's third placed qualifier is struck out. Anything with E is also knocked out as Korea DPR have no chance (even if Canada and Congo draw they'll be second-worst third placed team).

Spain will play against Brazil in the match at Swangard on Wednesday, regardless of today's other results.

Yup, I've updated the first post to include everything known prior to the last pair of games.

Another prime matchup is quite likely (ie. if Chile don't lose to Austria): Chile vs. Portugal.

Unfortunately, two African teams (Zambia vs. Nigeria) and two CONCACAF teams (either Mexico vs. Canada (if we make it) or United States vs. Costa Rica (if we don't)) will meet in the Round of 16.

And I did make a mistake somewhere before: I was wrong when I said that there would be an all-CONCACAF match-up, because I forgot about Congo.

Is it safe to say that Brazil made it through to the 2nd round as the 16th qualifier from the group stages?

14 teams had 4 or more points and got through.

3 teams had 3 points.....Portugal, Brazil and Costa Rica. First tiebreaker after points was goal difference. Portugal was 0 and Brazil and Costa Rica were -1. Portugal went through. Next tiebreaker was goals for and Brazil had 4 and Costa Rica 2. So Brazil went through.

That is shocking for a team with the talent and pedigree of Brazil, tough group or not!

They'll probably go on and win the whole thing now.........[:0]
