    Default Ottawa Wizards Press Release

    News Release
    *
The Ottawa Wizards are very disappointed by the actions taken by the CPSL. The CPSL is misstating the facts when they say the Wizards missed the deadline. The league asked the same question 3 times about the Wizards participating in the Canada Cup Finals. The Wizards gave them the same answer each time. “Ottawa Wizards deserve to be at the tournament. Why do you (the league) even ask?” The league made another mistake by removing the Wizards from the tournament illegally.
The Ottawa Wizards refused the format of the Canada Cup where some teams (Host team vs. Durham Flames) are asked to play 4 games in 72 hours; the Wizards are told to play 3 games in less then 48 hours. These objections are mostly due to health concerns for their players. Recent events in the Confederation Cup in Europe warn players about too many competitive games in such short periods.

    In Summary
    *
    Two years in a row….
ü That is how many times London City has made it to the semifinals because they were the host team. This happened even though they were eliminated from the Canada Cup in earlier rounds.
ü The league has been unfair in the bidding process for hosting both the Rogers Cup and the Canada Cup.
ü* The Wizards, who have won 5 out of the last 6 League Cups, have had to play Montreal which is one of the best teams in the CPSL, for their first qualifying game, whereas other teams enjoyed lesser competition.
ü* The Wizards have been asked to play a qualifier less than 24 hours before the semifinals.
    London City…
ü The Owner was part of the selection committee who made the decision on who hosts the tournaments. This was a direct conflict of interest.
ü Was awarded both the Canada Cup and the Rogers Cup this year, against admitted league policy.
ü Will have hosted 3 out of the past 4 Cups.
ü Cup Games attendance last year averaged 100-150 fans per match, which is a lot less then the Ottawa Wizards and St. Catherine's Cup games attendance figures.
    Ottawa Wizards…
ü Have won 5 out of the last 6 League Cups and are undefeated in its first 11 games this year.
ü There is no other sports tournament in the world with a rule where a defending champion has to play a qualifier the day before the semifinals.
ü Have concerns of players' safety with playing so many highly competitive games in such a short time.
ü* When Ottawa hosted the Cup tournament, the stadium was sold out and more than 1200 people watched the game.
ü The Ottawa Wizards has had the better offer*than London City in both years.
ü Ottawa has the best soccer facility in Canada.
    CPSL…
ü Did not even accept bids for the Rogers Cup this year.
ü Did not come up with the Canada Cup format and the host city selection before the competition started which is against known CSA and OSA policies.
ü Neither OSA nor the league provided documents showing the Canada Cup is a sanctioned tournament. The CSA already stated that it is not a sanctioned tournament by them.
ü** The league has shown short sightedness and has not seen the irony of the Canada Cup tournament being hosted in the nation's capital by*an organization which has the best offer, the best facilities and the best team.
ü**Reversed the last year's League Management Board (LMB) decision and took the Canada Cup Tournament away from Ottawa and awarded it to London, against its own rules and policies.
ü Instead of showcasing the best team in the league for the past 3 years, the league has removed the Wizards*from the Canada Cup competition illegally.
ü The league is making Durham Flames play an extra game as a punishment, because they supported the Ottawa Wizards' bid to host the Canada Cup.
ü The league and some CPSL owners directed personal insults to Wizards owner Omur Sezerman in London Free Press. http://www.canoe.ca/NewsStand/London...19/163599.html
ü The league is trying to do something no team has been successful in doing in the past 2 years of playoffs. The Wizards are unbeaten on the field and the league is trying to beat them off the field by removing the Wizards from the Canada Cup competition.
*ü*The league*has not shown the respect the Wizards*deserve.*The league has bended, broken and changed rules on the go.
    *
    *
**Because of the bold behavior of the league the Wizards were forced to take legal action against the league, equity owners and individual members of the competition committee. The league picked the wrong team and owner to fight with. The Wizards will fight back.
    *
    *
Footnote: The Ottawa Wizards have posted an email between Vincent Ursini, the league president, and the owners regarding last year's reversal of the Canada Cup competition, along with the Wizards offer of the Canada Cup format, email from Durham Flames, and other documents supporting our objections. These documents can be seen on our website www.ottawawizards.com.

I wish they had someone review their press releases before they send them out...I would do this for free. It would sound much better if there weren't so many spelling and grammar mistakes.

Yes I am sure there are some mistakes in the text. This press release was issued in response to the large number of people who wanted to know the Ottawa Wizards perspective. It was important for the Wizards to post it before the weekend. So this document was rushed and unable to go through a complete revision. I do feel however that their perspective is now represented.

Sounds like bridges are being burnt. Bit overdue it almost seems to me. Let them burn. Let them burn right down to the waterline.

I pity the Ontario footballers who have to tolerate this league. And me, I can usualy cut the nickle & dime club operators quite a bit of slack but well this is quite enough.

It can say as much about you who you choose for enemys as who you choose for friends.

I was just reading some of the stuff on the Wizards web site. It looks like most teams hate travelling all the way to Ottawa. I have the solution. Kick Ottawa and Laval out of the CPSL and take Canada and professional out of the league name. We can call it the, COOPSL, the Central Ontario Occassionally Professional Soccer League.
I think you've hit the nail on the head. The final didn't go to Ottawa for the simple reason that the teams didn't want to travel to Ottawa. That's why, when I was working out scheduling for the Lions last year, all eastern swings involved Ottawa back to back with Montreal.

The cost of the travel and of accomodations were a problem. Of course, many teams save money by putting four guys in each motel room. Isn't Canadian pro soccer wonderful.

Another potential name for the league is the Canadian Amateur Sunday Soccer And Holiday League. C*******.

    Massive Attack,

Well, facetiousness aside, we need something and the CPSL is all we've got. On the bright side, it makes the A-League look like Serie A, well maybe Serie B.

The presence of Laval and Ottawa is very important to a viable and credible league but damnitall, why did they stick themselves with this bloody stupid league name.

Talk of a Quebec Division, if realistic, is most interesting. It could solve some problem and it would elminate a lot of whinging but if I'm Quebec, I want my own autonomous league. If I'm Quebec, I don't need the CPSL's baggage but I'd welcome Ottawa.

Yes, I agree, the Canada Cup name is very ill-chosen. "The Government of Canada presents the ____________ Cup" would have made more sense.
