    Default CPSL Week 9 [R]

Results from the CPSL game played between St.Catherines Roma Wolves and Toronto Croatia at Club Roma Park on 16-July-03 (20:20 start)

    76 min...GOAL...TC Joe Draganic

Final Score: St.Catherines Roma Wolves 0 Toronto Croatia 1

    Highlights:
A packed house on a quite cool night. The game was a real defensive struggle throughout with both teams having few chances. The first half was dominated by midfield play with only a few left side runs by Croatia breaking up the game. Roma captain Tony Carbonara was helped off early in the game with an apparent ankle injury. This shook up the Roma side and a slightly different lineup was used. The second half resumed much like the first with plenty of mid field play. As the match moved along, both sides pushed forward and Croatia started to apply pressure. Roma keeper C.Perri was forced to make a couple of tremendous saves and Croatia was again let down by their finishing. A missed PK call by the ref had the Croatian fans fuming but with 15 minutes to go, TC scored through Draganic. A very controversial goal as from some angles it appeared to be offside. Roma came back with a flurry but could not beet TC keeper Azcurra who was in fine form.

Players to watch: SC Claudio Perri, TC George Azcurra

Players to avoid: referee (missed PK call)

    Commentary:
Excellently played tactical game. For once Roma was not tackling like rugby players and the game was very well played. I had an enjoyable time because i could cheer for Roma in two languages (english/italian) and for Croatia (croatian). As usual, the appearance of TC brought out the support of the local Croatian community and the house was completely packed. Three thoughts really stuck in my head as i was driving home. First, TC needs to find some strikers who can finish the crosses provided by their skilled midfield. Second, the keeper duel between Perri and Azcurra was fun to watch in that both take command of the field and both came up with some huge stops. Third, Roma needs to find a compliment for striker Carlo Arghittu so that they do not solely depend on his excellent runs.

BTW; i did attend the Roma/Olympians game in the previous round but did not post a result 'cuz i only do this from work and that was my week off. But watching Dino and Claudio go head to head in net was awesome. Can't wait to see them again later in the summer!

Results from the CPSL game played between Hamilton Thunder and Mississauga Olympians at Ivor Wynne Stadium on 17-July-03 (20:30 start)

    55 min...GOAL...HT Kevin DeSerpa [PK]
    58 min...GOAL...MO Darren Tilley
    81 min...GOAL...HT Jason Crnic

Final Score: Hamilton Thunder 2 Mississauga Olympians 1

Players to watch: MO Darren Tilley, HT Leo Laurito, MO Danny Gallagher

Players to avoid: referee (lost control again)

    Commentary:
A beauty night for soccer played at Ivor Wynne with about 2000+ people in attendance. A huge crowd that was really drowned out by the fact the stadium holds 19000+. Anyways, the game was actually a typical CPSL affair with fairly rough tackling and no repsect for the players on either side. The first half was a midfield struggle with only the Thunders goalpost preserving the tie. For once HT keeper Ferrari made some proper saves and looked semi respectable in net.
Either way, the game was uninteresting at times and it didn't seem like either team had the drive. Hamilton did get a boost when they subbed in Ian Bennet, Leo Laurito and Jason Crnic. Can't understand why Laurito doesn't start but i have heard it might have something to do with fitness/injury. On that note, it also seems like MO was sleepwalking through the game. There was a 3 minute burst where they looked like world beaters and easily threaded the Thunder defense to
equalize, but outside of that it was if they were resigned to a draw. One last note involves playing at Ivor Wynne. The field turf installed there is horrible for soccer since the ball was bouncing all over the place. And there was a dirt like substance covering the field causing some funny looking dust kickups every time the ball was played.

One can only help but wonder how good the Thunder would be if they still had Gallagher and Borgh on the backline and D.Perri as their keeper. With that backline they would probably challenge the Wizards for the title.

    Cheers,
    Lazyboy.

41 min...Sun Devils Timothy Garzon GOAL...VSD Willie Giummarra chests ball down running into box and pushes ball to charging Garzon on left for his 12 yard shot into right side of net.

75 min...Supra Sam Afriyie GOAL...Supra Danny Amaral gets pass on left and juggles ball then sends over short cross from left that has Afriyie send in 7 yard shot from middle to left side of net.

89 min...VSD Paul Sinisi is knocked down in TS box with his back to the net. Referee Andrew Jasinki takes no time to award a Penalty kick.

89 min...Sun Devils Joey Todaro GOAL...Todaro blasts his Penalty kick to top left corner of net leaving goalie Micheal Silva with no chance.

94 min (injury time)...Supra Danny Amaral GOAL...Amaral rolls Penalty kick to right side of net with goalie sliding left.

97 min (injury time)...Sun Devils Jason Dethomasis GOAL...Dethomasis freekick from 22 yards is curled into top right corner of net dipping downward at the last second.

    98 min (injury time)...game ends.

    Final Score:........Toronto Supra...........3..............Vaughan Sun Devils........3......

Attendance was about 135 on this warm windy night. This was the best game I've seen this season with two of the league's better teams. The goals in the second half weren't even needed to make it exciting. (I don't comment on all the defensive saves in these brief reports). The length of the injury time was justified because there were some time consuming injuries in the second half. Supra captain Danny Amaral fed balls into the box after runs down the right wing. Jarek Radzinski (yeah brother of that Everton player) listed as a defender was mostly placed on the left wing to make runs.

Sun Devils varied there dead-ball men with Jason Dethomasis scoring a world class David Beckham or "Bend It Like Beckham" goal right at the end to give Vaughan the tie. Writers on the Voyageurs board will have to ease up on criticism of owner's sons in the league with plays like this.

Game officials changed from yellow shirts to red between the halfs so they wouldn't clash with Sun Devils goalie Rob Tilley's jersey.

The game was being broadcast on local radio station CIRV 88.9 FM in Portuguese. Alex Franco who on radio talks at triple speed compared to his laid back style on television's CFMT OMNI news, Portuguese edition was caught yelling "Gol,Gol,Gol,Gol....gooooooollllllllllll" like the South American announcers after six minutes but didn't notice the flag was up for offside. Fortunately for him and the co-announcer he'd tag off to they had six chances to get it right.

CPSL Durham Flames vs Ottawa Wizards

Result of CPSL game of Saturday July 19, 2003 between Durham Flames and Ottawa Wizards played at Civic Stadium in Oshawa at 4:00pm.

19 min...Wizards Charles Gbeke GOAL...Gbeke heads in 5 yarder just under bar and over goalie Serge Desbiens after receiving short cross from McDonald Yobe. (Gbeke had just 'scored' on a brilliant bicycle kick a minute earlier but was called offside. They'd just announced the 'goal' when the real goal was scored so it was a great Kreskin moment).

30 min...Wizards Kevin Nelson GOAL...OW Abraham Osman on left rolls pass to Nelson who kicks in 20 yarder low into left corner of net.

39 min...Wizards Charles Gbeke GOAL...Gbeke short 5 yard kick through crowd of players after short cross from right, OW players actually jump out of way for shot to go in.

47 min...Flames Ryan Dummett GOAL...Dummett in middle gets to loose ball and chips from 18 yards over goalie Simon Eaddy who is off his line after making play and just under bar.

66 min...Wizards Abraham Osman GOAL...Osman pushes ball through defenders on left and he chips 12 yarder into right corner of net.

77 min...Flames Adam Vickers GOAL...Flames player's freekick into box and Vickers boots 7 yarder through crowd of players and ball bounces over fallen goalie into center of net.

81 min...Wizards player is tackled in Flames box. Referee Calin Pintea calls a Penalty kick.

82 min...Wizards MacDonald Yobe GOAL...Yobe slots shot into low right of net with goalie sliding left.

    Final Score:........Durham Flames.........2............Ottawa Wizards.........5......

Attendance was about 125 on this hot afternoon. Wizards haven't lost this year and Flames have only won once so having patience most outside observers could have predicted the end result of this game. A window in the press box had a bullet hole in it from a pellet gun.

Flames had only one good shot in the first half but the goalie was up to the challenge. Otherwise they could have used a lawn chair. Seeing Wizards head coach Hubert Busby listed as the backup goalie (hey he was number 1 on the Toronto Lynx 1998 team with Theo Zagar as the backup) on the roster I asked him about goalie Salbrahima Trarore but was assured he didn't make the trip for just this one weekend. MacDonald Yobe was brilliant in the first half with runs down the wing and crosses into the box.

Flames picked up their chances in the second half but opening up left them open in the back and more brilliant runs by the Wizards forwards. Kevin Nelson was substituted at halftime but the Wizards have a game tomorrow afternoon against Metro Lions. I had an interview with Wizards midfielder/defender Robin Hart, the scorer of the winning goal at last year's Rogers Cup and will pitch that to Inside Soccer magazine. Oh yeah, Robin Hart played defender today and was his reliable self.

Details of the CPSL game of Sunday July 20, 2003 between Metro Lions and Ottawa Wizards played at Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough at 4:00pm.

5 min...Wizards Charles Gbeke GOAL...OW MacDonald Yobe runs down right cross into box and leaping Gbeke heads from 5 yards on left to right side of net beyond goalie Gregory Drakes.

23 min...Wizards Abraham Osman GOAL...Osamn runs in from left on 2 on 0 with two defenders almost even with them and he slides 15 yarder into right corner of net.

47 min...OW Greg Jehs grabs Lions Hayden Fitzwilliams running into box and pulls him down, referee Zoran Kristo calls Penalty kick.

48 min...Lions Darryl Gomez GOAL...Gomez low blast on Penalty kick to left corner of net has goalie Simon Eaddy dive wrong way.

75 min...Wizards MacDonald Yobe GOAL...Yobe on right side with clear shot on net gets 20 yard blast into left side of net.

    Final Score:........Metro Lions........1.........Ottawa Wizards..............3............

Attendance was about 125 with most fans arriving just before game time as a one hour rain storm before the game soaked the field and seats in the stadium. This was a much closer game than yesterday's opponents Durham Flames and a tieing goal looked possible until Yobe's 75 minute play. Three minutes after the Lions goal, the Wizards goalie fumbled the ball back into his own net but was fortunate to have the play whistled offside.
