This is a Jeux Canada Games year ... I almost forgot. Interesting the event is a 1995 birth year (U18?). I'm a fan of this type of system of getting the elite players together for some serious competition. Shame it only happens every 4 years.

The first thing that I'm noticed in my tour around the Provincial Challenge Cup Senior Leagues is the presence of the CG teams in NL, NS, NB & PE playing with the grown men and not getting shut out. Some wins, some goal scorers and some experience for defenders.

But, that's where it seems to end. QC, ON, MB all seem to have selection camps ... SK is only fielding 2 U18 teams in their provincial league (senior men? HUSA Alumni ... again?) AB & BC selection camps also?

Listening to some of the pundits recently talk about the young boys playing against men (CSL old or new) greatly advanced their soccer learning curve and soccer IQ. So, I guess, I couple of questions. Has Atlantic Canada got it wrong? Are they getting these teams into the senior men's leagues because there is nothing else. Why are there not U18 or U20 teams in the senior men's leagues all across the country? Would this not be a good option for Academies?

Seriously, the CSA wants some sort of National D-3 league, this is another source of teams to fill these spots. The provinces are funding these teams to a degree already so why not make it a longer term endeavor rather than a once every four years task?

Result and details of the Friday June 14, 2013 CSL game between
Serbian White Eagles and Niagara United played at Centennial
Stadium in Etobicoke at 9:00pm.

79 min...NU Keith Makabuya GOAL...NU Marco Stencel is given
a pass on a give and go play on the right and crosses from
25 yards with goalie Stefan Avramovic guarding the right post
and two NU forwards running in from left against one
defender. The defender slides to stop the ball but misses and
NU Michael Vitaterna shoots from 8 yards and hits the left
post. The ball deflects back out and Makabuya following up
boots in 6 yard rebound into middle of open net.

Final Score:.....Serbian White Eagles.......0.......
Niagara United...........1.............

Attendance was about 80 on this cool but dry night.

White Eagles couldn't put away their chances. Much of the
game was conducted in the Niagara half with Niagara waiting
for counterattacks. SWE Kiril Dimitrov had plenty of long
runs up the wing on 3 on 8 rushes then his crosses were into
the well protected box, caught by the goalie,
over the box or behind the net.

Jonathan Deluca earned the shutout for Niagara having to
make a few key saves and benefiting from poor SWE shooting.

Referee Manuel Orellana gave out only one Yellow card
in this game which was mostly wide open. There were a lot
of injuries with players going all out.

Keith Makabuya was a graduate of TFC Academy (that played
in this league from 2008 to 2012). He was given a contract
for the MLS Toronto FC for 2011 and 2012 but was released at
the end of last season. Makabuya is from nearby (to Niagara
Falls) St Catharines.

Best non-scoring chances were at 21 minutes when SWE Kiril
Dimitrov rushes on the left to the end line and rolled
a ball to the center and the goalie dove forward to push
the ball just out of reach of the charging SWE Djodjije
Strunjas waiting for a 5 yard tap-in. 24 minutes had
NU Keith Makabuya bump a defender over and kicked
a 20 yard shot from the right just over the bar.
30 minutes had SWE Strunjas cross from 25 yards along
the right end line and SWE Ramon Bailey one-touched
an 8 yard shot from the left that bounced
to the goalie. 57 minutes had SWE Dimitrov rush up the
right to get to a pass and cross across the 6 yard box
just a step ahead of the charging SWE Nikola Miodrag.
70 minutes had SWE Dimitrov cross from the right
just over the head of the jumping SWE Strunjas at 7 yards.
74 minutes had SWE Ramon Bailey's cornerkick from the left
popped up in the box and the goalie missed it but
a defender kicked it over his own net.

United coach James McGillivray confirmed this was their
first win of the season. (1 win, 2 ties, 3 losses).
SWE hasn't won in their last four games and their record
falls to 2 wins, 4 losses, 1 tie. Their last game
was a 4-0 loss away to Waterloo last Sunday so their
defence has improved because Niagara's scoring chances
were minimal tonight.

United will be back at this stadium on Sunday night
to play Toronto Croatia. They were leaving right
after the game to return to Niagara in a tour bus
parked at the north end gate.

My name was mentioned on the air on The Fan 590 last
night when Nigel Reed read part of my e-mail.
I was pleased that the CSL was put in a good light
the week before by guest Jonathan Osario from
MLS Toronto FC when he was talking about his background
in soccer and later Bob Iarusci said the league was good
for providing competition for young players against
seasoned veterans. Also he read my comments
about the contrast of watching Kadeisha Buchanan
debut for the Canadian National women's team
in front of 22000 then within the week seeing
her score for Toronto Lady Lynx in front of
less than 100 although Nigel changed the crowd
size to 'four men and a dog' which is their
inside joke for the number of listeners to
their radio show. Those two weeks of shows
are available in podcast form on i-Tunes and
their website. Hmmm. One of their guests
was former nat player Clare Rustad who
played for Lady Lynx.

As the largest national team supporters group, should the voyageurs issue a statement of some kind on the QSF's turban ban?

Or rather, what is our position? People have been all over TFC and Hoilett for something, that in my mind, is private business
Yet we have this public, national issue, that we are unwilling to comment on?

Isn't supporting Canadian soccer our groups mandate? I realize that the QSF has met once more on the matter and their subsequent
decision will be released in about nine days. But why wait.

Where do we stand?

Result and details of the Sunday June 9, 2013 CSL game between
Brampton City United and Burlington SC played at Victoria Park
in Brampton at 7:00pm.

44 min...BCU Milos Scepanovic GOAL...BCU Adrian Tismenar receives
pass from center line and he passes from 40 yards forward to
Scepanovic who shoots low from 15 yards that goes under diving
goalie Vladimir Vujasinovic at 8 yards into center of net.

Final Score:.....Brampton City United..........1........
Burlington SC.........0............

Attendance was about 250 on this mild evening. This game was
broadcast live on Rogers Community channel for those who
lived in Brampton and local area.

Camilo Benzi earned the shutout for BCU. (He was on the roster
of York Region Shooters last year). He had a few key stops to
make to ensure United won today mostly batting away cornerkicks
and crosses.

Referee Lubisa Yrljes gave out five Yellow cards that I counted,
four to United in the close marking game.

Best non-scoring chances were at 21 minutes when BCU Marcos
Nunes passes from 40 yards forward to BCU Ardit Xhameni
who at 20 yards stops, spins, and blasts a shot that the goalie
palmed over the net. From the resulting cornerkick the ball
was knocked around in the box and BCU Damion Scott lifted his
leg to flick a 10 yard shot that the goalie caught. 29 minutes
had BCU David Velastegui take a cornerkick from the left that
a BCU player headed down from the right across the box and BCU
Scott blasted a 12 yarder over the net. 87 minutes had Burlington
William Etchu Tabi blast a partially cleared throw-in that
Burlington players couldn't deflect in with their legs raised
try to tip.

The Burlington team kit caught me by surprise. They wore
all orange--neon orange and could probably play without
stadium lights. They certainly didn't play like highway
pylons though.

Burlington SC is the only new team in the CSL this season.
They've put their senior team together player personnel wise
with experienced players from other past and present CSL
teams. Let's see--midfield player/coach William Etchu
'Tabi' from London City, defender Nikola Stanojevic and
midfielder Mustafa Mohammad also from London City, midfielders
Michael Tait and Marco Machado from Brantford Galaxy, forward
Mohammed Mohammed came over from from Niagara United.
Defender Danilo Richards played for Milltown FC. Defender
Nam Topp-Nguyen was with the TFC Academy.

Most famous Burlington player is forward Nicholas Lindsay who
played for TFC Academy last year as he was recovering from
a long term injury and recovered enough to play
for the MLS Toronto FC team before being cut after the
end of their season. He played well last night with his
speed but went down a bit too easily trying to draw foul
calls and a Penalty kick.

Burlington midfielder Judah Hernandez played for Brampton City
last year. A woman and her daughter were talking in the stands
and one said "He used to play for us last year so now I call
him 'Judas'!".

Brampton has picked up players besides Camilo Benzi. Midfielders
Damion Scott and Thomas McLean both played for Mississauga last
year and Adrian Tismenar played for Serbian White Eagles.

The Toronto Rogers Community channel had a lacrosse game
scheduled instead. The Rogers Superchannel for sports
has no rebroadcast of this game on their schedule.
The only benefit to me was that the game was moved to 7:00pm
from 5:30pm. I just had enough time to get here after a
PDL league game ended an hour earlier. With my crowded
schedule I wasn't expecting to see the new Burlington
team until next month.

Looks like I won't be able to hear if the play-by-play guys
actually called out "And Abdullah Abdullah passes forward
to Mohammed Mohammed and he takes a shot..."

We always talk about the importance of more pro and/or elite clubs in Canada and how it would be the key to success. However, I was thinking today about the Thunder Bay Chill. Here's a Canadian elite level club that has been in existence for more than a decade and has won a North American championship. They have endured while we have seen many clubs and many levels come and go. So in a lot of ways you could argue they should be a model others should use as a template. But I suspect nobody here would say that. In the Voyageurs world, they are not even a blip. In the Other Men's Leagues, there is not one thread devoted to them for at least 3 or 4 pages, and they are currently in their season.

So I guess the question is why? I think the fact they have never really developed a Canadian player of any note at any age level is part of it. It seems hard to believe that a good club in existence for as long as they have would not have had a couple of noteable Canadians on its roster for at least a season. But the are a good club on and off the field (how many PDL clubs have folded since the Chill started) and they get absolutely zero attention here. Any thoughts?

Result and details from the Sunday June 9, 2013 PDL game
between Toronto Lynx and River City Rovers played at
Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 4:00PM.

35 min...RCR RED card...Peter May (their captain) is given
a direct ejection by referee Niquita Amirkhanian while
waiting on the edge of the Lynx box for RCR Hezekiah Weiss
to make a long throw-in. It looked like he must have
punched or elbowed Lynx Lloyd Grist but the ref saw it.

46 min (1st half injury time)...RCR Richard Ballard GOAL...
RCR Hezekiah Weiss kicks low 25 yard cross from right sideline
that has Ballard boot 12 yarder low and into left side
of net with goalie Adam Jansen frozen in center of net.

51 min...RCR Dylan Terry GOAL...RCR Richard Ballard rushes
to 15 yards down middle but holds possession when defenders
block him. He taps ball over to left to RCR Humberto
Bertran who rolls ball from 10 yards on left to Terry
who kicks 5 yarder from right into empty net.

Final Score:......Toronto Lynx.....0.....
.....River City Rovers......2......

Attendance was just over 200 on this warm afternoon with a bright
sun in the west. The crowd was the biggest I've seen
at a non-school day game for a few years. It was proclaimed
the first Toronto Soccer Association Day and Bill Spiers
president of the TSA took the ceremonial kickoff with
the mascot The Lynxster (who was there his second game in a row).

There were lots of chances for both teams equally in the second
half with the Rovers down a man. Best non-scoring plays
were at 12 minutes when RCR Pierce Kiembi shot an 8 yarder wide left
as an RCR player put a 20 yard ball into the box. 30 minutes
had RCR Dylan Terry cross from 22 yards on the left and a charging
RCR Pierce Kiembi headed the ball wide left from 10 yards.
44 minutes had RCR Terry send in a pass from the right from
45 yards that the charging Humberto Bertran headed a 12 yarder down
the middle wide right of the post.

Lynx swapped three players a halftime. They had to switch goalies
with Matt Silva replacing Adam Jansen when he was hurt at 59 minutes.

53 minutes had Lynx Maksym Kowal cut over the the left and blast
an 18 yarder down the middle that the goalie dived to left to push
the shot wide of the post. 56 minutes had Lynx Taylor McNamara
charge to the end line on the left to fire and 8 yarder that the
goalie smothered. 74 minutes had and RCR player on the left send
in a low cross from 15 yards past the goalie on the left post
and RCR Terry at 4 yards shoot wide right of the open net.
78 minutes had Lynx Sam Oritt roll a pass forward from 22 yards and
Lynx Leigh Veidman turned and fired an 8 yarder that the goalie
on right at 1 yard sprawled and deflected the ball wide right of
the post. The resulting cornerkick had Lynx Callum Home hit
the post on a header from 12 yards.

Chris Hubbard earned the shutout for the Rovers and had to be sharp
towards at the end when the Lynx were pressing to score.

Referee Niquita Amirkhanian controlled this game well. Besides
the Red card she gave out two Yellow cards that I counted, both
to Rovers players in the second half for sloppy challenges
when they were tiring out.

You would expect that with the Lynx having a 55 minute
man advantage they would win this game but that didn't
happen although they had plenty of chances--but the
Rovers did too. The Rovers had played Thursday and
Friday night and lost to London and Kitchener-Waterloo
on this grueling roadtrip.

This brings an end to the Lynx season opening home stand.
They hold a record of 1 win, 3 losses. Now they have
to see what they can do on the road.

I could see the Lynx players weren't in a good mood and
I was in a hurry to get to a CSL game that started
within an hour in Brampton so I asked the Lynx stats
lady some roster questions. Midfield sub Matt Osario
is an older COUSIN (not brother) of MLS Toronto FC player
Jonathan Osario. Midfield sub Eric Olazabal is a
player who played for the TFC Academy in their first
year in the CSL in 2008 with twin brother Eros. Both
moved on to play for Milltown FC when they were in
the CSL.
Attendance was about 80 on this very cold night with
a full moon in the south. I am glad I was wearing
my parka (like all fans) but unexpected as this
is the 24th of May already!

Wolves started the game with just Michael Pavela up
front for much of the first half but gradually
brought more players forward. They were called
offside many times in the game but on some very
important rushes their timing was right and away
they'd be alone on a through ball pass.

SWE Daniel Chamale had earned his first Yellow card
at 58 minutes for knocking over Wolves captain
Scott MacLennan knocking him out of the game--he
had to be carried off the field as he couldn't put
weight on his leg. He was replaced by eventual
third goal scorer Brett Larocque.

Best non-scoring chances were at 27 minutes when SWE
Djordjije Strunjas rushed on the left crossed into
the box but behind charging SWE forwards. An SWE
player had a shot blocked then SWE Sasa Vukoje had
his 15 yard shot saved. Next minute had Wolves
Angelo Beatrice roll a cross from 25 yards on the far
left that SWE defenders and Wolves Michael Pavela whiff
on kicking at the ball as it rolls even with the 8 yard
line and out the right side of the box. 31 minutes
had SWE Vukoje shoot a 15 yarder shot that the goalie
made the save on the left post and Vukoje blasted the
10 yard rebound into the outside left webbing of the net.
43 minutes had SWE Ivan Stankovic take a short corner
kick from the right to SWE Strunjas who ran towards
goal and his low 12 yard shot had a sliding defender
block at 5 yards. The next minute had SWE Stankovic take
a 30 yard freekick down the middle that was blocked on
the edge of the box and he got to the rebound and cross
the ball and had the goalie punch the ball away
at 8 yards on the left side of the box in a crowd
of players.

The second half had Wolves Ephraim Cirillo cross from
the right end line after eluding a defender and the
ball was popped and only partially cleared and Wolves
Jad Nasser headed the ball from 8 yards that the goalie
swatted wide of the net.

SWE has their record fall to 1-1-0 in two home games.

This was the Wolves first game of the season. They
have already equalled last year's win total! From
two Wolves officials I talked to they say they've
gone with a much younger team this year. Many of
this year's team came from their 2012 Reserves team.
Carlo Arghittu is back as the head coach. I watched
him as a player on this team but also going back to
the 1999 Toronto Lynx. Claudio Perri is no longer
the goalie with the team. His older brother Dino
was the goalie on Hamilton Steelers of the Canadian
Soccer League (the cross Canada-wide league) in the
late 1980s when I first started coming out to soccer
games (yeah before the Internet).
sends in pass and Galvani blasts 22 yard shot from right
into left side of net beyond goalie Reece Richardson.

36 min...FCL Denver Spearman GOAL...Lynx Jesse Andoh
Final Score:.....Toronto Lynx......1.....
Forest City London....3...

Attendance was about 100 on this warm and damp evening.
It had rained three times early in the day including
the drive over here but no rain fell during the game
and their was actually a bright sun in the north
west until 72 minutes.

Referee Scott Dekker gave out four Yellow cards to
the Lynx all in the first half then one Yellow to
FCL in the second. Some of the Lynx cards were
just for complaining about calls. The Penalty kick
call pretty much put the game away. I felt the
half should have been over.

The Lynx played much better in the second half after
making three substitutions at halftime.

Best chances that didn't score were at 11 minutes when
the Lynx goalie made a save on FCL Denver Spearman from
8 yards on a shot from the left then pushed the ball
out of bounds as Spearman collided with him but the
referee awarded the Lynx a freekick. 50 minutes had
FCL Tom Owens take a 40 yard freekick from the left
and an FCL player headed the ball just over the bar
from 8 yards down the middle in a crowd of players.
55 minutes had Lynx Callum Home blast a 40 yard shot
on the left that the diving goalie pushed just wide
left of the post. Lynx Danny Iannacito took the cornerkick
that followed and Lynx Stephen Hoyle headed the ball
just wide left of the net from 8 yards on the right.
62 minutes had Lynx Anthony Novak take a midair 22
yard shot down the middle that the goalie caught.
65 minutes had Lynx Home take a shot that hit
the post after getting to a 25 yard freekick that
was lofted into the box. Lynx James Galvani blasted
the rebound over the net. 70 minutes had FCL
Brandon Beresford blast a low 28 yarder up the middle
that the diving goalie pushed wide left of the net
in about their only chance of the second half.

FC London move to 2-0-0 on the season both wins
by 3-1 scores. I had forgotten until I got home
that FCL are the defending PDL League Champions
from 2012 so the Lynx should use that as a guidepost.

This was the opening game of the season for the
Lynx. They continue their schedule with three
more home games before leaving town. Sunday
June 2nd vs Chicago Inferno, Wednesday June 5th
against Michigan, and Sunday June 9th vs River
City. All home game for the rest of the season
will be played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke.

Are goalkeepers getting enough protection from the officials?

Figured I'd charge this up a bit lol...just my observations and I am wondering if you guys are seeing the same thing...I figured I'd post here since it's really relevant to the grassroots game and especially youth soccer..

I have noticed over the past few years that protection of the goalies by the referees has dropped off considerable over the past 3 years or so. What used to be sure-fire cautions and even red cards under violent conduct are being replaced by a shrug of the shoulders or even "advantage" called (seriously? Wtf is that?). The advantage bit I refer to is when goalies go to claim the ball off a high ball or cross and receive a vicious elbow from an attacker who has zero intentions of playing the ball. The referee either lets it go, or plays "advantage" if the goalie somehow claims possession. Can anyone shed some light on that?

One incident in particular the really stood out to me was watching a game a few months back when the Black team's goalie made a low save to the right and held on to the ball. There was a clutter of players around him and he proceeded to get kicked three times by the same player while he had possession of the ball. The icing on the cake was when the goalkeeper (rightfully IMO) said something to the referee questioning the lack of a call (that is CSA certified and reffed in the USL before) and his response was, exact words "You got the ball, what are you crying about?". I wish I was making this up. All I could do was shake my head and leave...it was disgusting. I know quite a few referees who would have definitely produced a red card for violent conduct, or at the very minimum, a booking for dangerous/reckless play. The player who committed the offence did not even receive a talking to from the referee btw...

Unfortunately I could go on about another half a dozen incidents or so that I have seen. Don't get me wrong, I love a good, physical game of soccer. I have played with and against guys who would throw a slide tackle 100x harder than the average player in Canada...but they also did it clean, not recklessly, and within the Laws of the Game. I also know fully well, that referees have a tough job. In fact, I am not even bashing them at all because I don't think they are wholly the problem. I think the problem starts at the top.

Is anyone seeing the same things I am seeing? What are your thoughts? Would like to know your observations...especially fellow keepers (or referees) out there. Thanks.
