It's May, it's Wednesday, and that means another Nutrilite Canadian Championship contest live on the box thanks to the good folks over at Roger's SportsNet. It'll be action from the Left Coast tonight as the Vancouver Whitecaps continue their 2010 "Farewell to Swangard" tribute by hosting divisional rivals Montreal Impact. And for fans of Canadian footie it's their 1st chance to see if there is still any bad blood lingering between the two clubs. The 2009 calender left the Vancouver Whitecaps 2nd best in both the league and cup and their cross-country rivals played a deciding role in both instances.

Predictions are hard to make at this point into the young season as all three clubs are still trying to find their on-field rhythm and everyone knew that would be the case when the Cup calender was announced but it's doubtful anyone could have predicted the unpredictable silliness would grip this competition so early on when in Match #1 last Wednesday the Impact once again kept with their recent wretched form against Toronto with a far from finest hour display of sport and sportsmanship.

First up, whether Maradona likes it or not, is a match against Argentina in Argentina on May 24th. Coming on the Victoria Day weekend, hopefully this gets hyped up in the Canadian media and some good tv ratings - assuming we can get it on tv at all. For many Canadian players, this match is as good as it is going to get without actually playing in a World Cup. It's similar to Canada playing Brazil's World Cup team just prior to the 1994 World Cup (a match that Canada famously tied 1-1 before Brazil much-more-famously won the World Cup - should Argentina be looking to play for the draw as an artificial way of obtaining a good omen?) Canada and Argentina have never played at the senior team level - the last match of any kind I can remember between the two nations on the men's side would be the U20 World Cup round of 16, when Argentina prevailed 2-1 against a Canadian team that featured the likes of Jason Bent, Paul Stalteri and Dwayne De Rosario (Bent scored for Canada on an indirect free kick).

A few words on just a few of the stories in Canadian football this past week
      Reggie Boyz 1-nil!
It's hard to know what to make of Stephan Hart's Canada squad which followed up a training camp in Florida with a visit to Kingston, Jamaica this weekend. With so many new faces in so many positions it was always going to be a difficult task to judge the performances of the players in a real-wold-context, but for the Vs population who were reduced to following the match Old School, that is to say on the radio, the task has proven doubly difficult.
It takes a special eye to judge an erratic mix of youthful players expected to perform in the Caribbean heat & humidity, with any reasonable knowledge. But that is the task which lays before MNT coach Stephan Hart. It's step number one on the long road to qualifying towards Brazil 2014, and it began January 31st in Kingston, Jamaica.
Fingers & toes crossed for a spring friendly for the MNT. Especially one with an overwhelming positive result and some television coverage. And after 4 straight losses on the road a home test would also probably be welcomed by the players.

You could say the summer of 2009 was a pretty good one for Mr. Marcus Haber of Vancouver, British Columbia. After a year or two in Holland the gifted Big Man came home to spend a summer with family, friends, and of course the Vancouver WhiteCaps Football Club. Impressive individual performances, coming within a skipped heart beat of the Voyageur's Cup, a 1st Division runners up medal, and a United Soccer League's Rookie of the Year award all added up to a return trip to Europe for trials and as announced this Friday past, a contract with Coca Cola Championship side and promotion favorites West Bromwich Albion.
