Alright, what was supposed to happen last week was delayed by being sick as a dog and losing my phone.

So today kicks off working on The Voyageurs basically full time. How is this going to work? I have no idea. Actually that isn't true, I do have a few ideas... but more on that later.

Heat Press & Shirts & Merchandise

I finally figured out what was wrong with the heat press. While the heat press has a regular plug, it requires a 20amp isolated circuit. It was never getting enough power. While everything has a learning curve, in this case I was banging my head on a wall you couldn't climb. Generally I am pretty good about RTFM, but pretty much failed outright in this case. Sneaky normal looking plug. Damn you.

I'll be issuing refunds for everyone that bought stuff. Our merchandise issues will be fixed soon.

Up today?

Front page clean up.

Issue refund checks for merchandise purchases

Explore the paid membership system in vBulletin

Start layout on new cards & 3 fold pamphlet

Swap URL from cansoc.org to thevoyageurs.org (maybe)

Use the bullet feature in the editor

It is said that San Pedro Sula, Honduras has the tragic honour of being the murder capitol of the world and brother do I believe it, 'cause we got murdered.

One question answered, two old ones remain

If we learned anything Tuesday afternoon it HAS to be there is no longer any question as to whether our current Canadian lads will, like the generations before them, wilt in the tropical heat of Central America. An early result in Cuba may have teased us but the performances and results in Panama and Honduras just reinforce a long track record. In CONCAF you need to win at home to advance. Its just that simple.

Canada's next competitive tournament is the 2013 Gold Cup. This gives cause to remind us of two long standing and important questions which dog our confederation, questions which might be given greater attention now that Pirate Jack Warner and some of his corrupt cronies have finally got the bullet.

Should the Gold Cup be a semi-annual event? Especially since every other Gold Cup is held in the heart of the final round of World Cup Qualifying, The Hex. During The Hex does anyone that matters care a sausage about the Gold Cup?

And secondly, is the USA constantly hosting the Gold Cup a good thing? Not just for the financial but also for the competitive integrity of the competition?

Its been a long time coming but both FIFA and CONCACAF are changing. These are both questions which haven't been answered to a lot of very knowledgeable peoples satisfaction.

A heads up for the Voyageur Newbies

We've seen a lot of new faces at both the matches and at the Viewing Parties this past year, a legion of real live, breathing, cheering, singing, positives that we can take from this World Cup Qualifying campaign. And with a lot of those positives finding their way to the forums, either to share their voices within our little sub-culture or to just simply lurk and stay informed its not surprising that some of our new found compatriots might not be aware of a little piece of unwritten etiquette that gets observed on the forums after events like the one which occurred on the afternoon of October 16th (that event of which we will never...speak of.... again).

Veterans of the forum recognize this as “The 48 hour Amnesty”. Its not some sort of an amnesty where you get to go all coo-coo, you still can and will get your arse in trouble for what you post, but a certain amount of, oh how can I put this, community healing is needed in the 48 hours following any disaster. I believe a rare extension to 72 hours might even be appropriate.

You can expect to see the four distinctive parts of community healing in abundance on the forums the next couple o' days (outrage, despair, silver linings and solutions), especially stages #1 and #2. People need to get things off their chest, they will run off their mouth, and everyone's nerves are a little more exposed and tender right now. So remember the 48 hour Amnesty and try to be generous and just a bit forgiving. Happier days will come when we're all standing together again to support Canadian soccer, whether its down at the park, at the pub, or in our on-line community. You can look forward to it.

Allez les Rouges!

If you really haven't been paying any sort of attention or perhaps have just returned from a summer vacation on the planet Mars you need to know that FIFA World Cup Qualifying re-launches this weekend and as is the long standing habit across The V Nation blood pressures are rapidly rising.

Speaking of rising the good folks over at the Canadian Soccer Association (and the closet Vs who're know to haunt the more shadowy corridors over there) are continuing to develop their See thee Rise vid series to entertain, inform, and promote this vital home and away series against Panama. Go ahead, take a look.

We have sold-out FIVE SECTIONS of BMO Field and counting! Not a bad days work for an unadvertised sporting event against an opponent who is a less than spectacular draw. Great job everyone from coast to coast to coast but a massive shout has to go out to the V elders in the Toronto area who are the keystone to this success. And it isn't just the success of the effort but the eclectic nature of the effort itself. Vs coming together in all shapes and sizes, club supporters, soccer districts and private citizens, working towards the common purpose of making Canada's home matches, HOME MATCHES.

Tickets are continuing to go fast so if you haven't yet taken the plunge get yourself together, man! Grab every chance you can to be a part of that happy day when we show the enemy supporters that if they think that its business as usual, that they can visit Canada and create a home game for their team, that they need to bloody well think again.

If you can't make it down to BMO Field (you know, because you've been getting murdered at work all-year-long) don't worry, chances are there's a Viewing Party at a pub near you. Eat, drink, and be merry whilst disturbing other diners shouting at a ref and players on a television screen.

So if whilst out and about this Friday evening you just happen to find yourself hungry and thirsty (around 7:15 EST) in the neighbourhood of the pub which also just happens to be hosting the local Vs and then whilst waiting on your nachos and Honey Brown you just happen to spy some people in red watching Canada dominate Panama (in high def) well, Fate has show its hand. There's no use trying to argue with Fate, you just need to accept it. So come on over, say Hey and enjoy an evening with your Canadian compatriots as Stephan Hart & Co. put the the nails into the lid of the coffin that is about to become Panama's WCQing campaign.

Sorry Panama, nothing personal, but its you or us.

FSimeon Jackson Jackson was not even a sub, used or unused in Norwich City's first victory in the English Premier League this season. It is becoming disappointing that Norwich have not used him more. Especially with the success he had for them last season.

FIain Hume Iain Hume would score for Preston North End this week in his return to the club's first side. This goal would come after reports stating that he had been dropped from the starting line up by the club after returning from the MNT. This goal will certainly dispel any doubts as to why he is in the starting lineup.

FDwayne De Rosario De Rosario's DC United side would lost 3-0 to the Seattle Sounders. He played 62 minutes of the game. However, De Rosario can expect to see playoff action this season as the club is one win away from making the post season. We all know how De Ro get's when the playoffs come around.

MJosh Simpson Simpson would play the full 90 for Maniasaspor in it's 1-0 loss to Orduspor. Simpson was coming off a game in which he had scored the last minute equalizer but could not bury anything this time around.

MWill Johnson Will Johnson would play the full 90 minutes is Real Salt Lake's 1-0 victory of Sporting Kansas City. He recorded a single shot on goal.

MJulian De Guzman De Guzman played the full 90 minutes for Toronto FC who beat the MLS Cup champions Colorado Rapids 2-1. Didn't do all that much for the Red's on this occasion.

DDavid Edgar Edgar would play the full 90 for Burnley. Burnley would lose a disappointing 2-1 game to Peterborough. Edgar was credited on the team's website with making a mistake crucial to the second Peterborough goal.

DMike Klukowski Would play the full 90 minutes in Maniasaspor's 1-0 loss to Orduspor. Is starting to play consistently for the Turkish club. This is a good sign for Canadians.

DKevin Mckenna The Canadian Captain would play the full 90 in FC Koln's 4-1 demolition of Bayern Leverkusen. The central defender has been getting decent playing time for Koln this season.

DAndre Hainault Hainault would play the full 90 in Houston Dynamo's 2-1 win of the SJ Earthquakes. Hainault should see playoff action like De Ro as his team is still very deep in the playoff hunt.

GKLars Hirschfeld This will be updated as Hirschfeld's next game for Valerenga is Tomorrow.

Recap of the Week:
Starting XI: Player of the Week Has to be Hume. The Canadian striker had a goal for Preston North End and is proving that he shouldn't have even been considered off the starting lineup. He now has 18 goals for Preston North End.

Reoccurring Theme: Playing time. Not a lot of these players were considered serious contenders for a lot of playing time this weekend. However, for the most part they all played serious minutes. With the obvious exception of Simeon Jackson every Canadian player played decent minutes this weekend. 8 of them played the full 90 minutes for their respective clubs. This is a very good sign for any fans of the Canadian National Team because this experience is key for the players.

Low Point: Jackson was not even of the bench for Norwich City. A little bit disappointing after, like I said above, he was so good for them last season. Hopefully they will use him eventually.

Well I have had time, overnight, to reflect on what really happened on the pitch last night. This part of the post, the second part, will reflect on Canada and what I think they should do with their roster going forward and so-forth. It will also take a look at the individual performances of each player on the Canadian roster that night (who played obviously). In fact I will begin with that.

90'GK Lars Hirschfeld 4/10- That goal wasn't as weak as Craig Forest described. But really he should have gotten to it. Other than that he really didn't have much opposition. When the ball came into his half he dealt with it pretty easily and calmly. Certainly wasn't a terrible showing from the Canadian keeper. Will need to be better though.

90'D Ante Jazic 6/10- We was pretty good. He certainly didn't look 35 in terms of fitness. He should be a player in consideration for Canada in terms of playing the backline for other games. Obviously he wasn't really tested too much but when he was he dealt with it quite capably.

90'D Andre Hainault 4/10- Again, wasn't tested much. But he really didn't seem on his game. He gave up a few needless give-aways and really didn't look all that confident on the back end. Will need to be better if he hopes to keep his job, assuming Canada sticks with this three defender formation.

90'D Kevin Mckenna 5.5/10- Didn't look really fit but didn't have many problems either. Took a very good free kick, and should be considered to take more of them before the campaign is over. Wasn't incredible, but really didn't need to be on this night. Going forward we will get a better look at him as he is tested more.

90'Jonathan Beaulieu- Bourgault 5/10- Was kind of quite. Didn't really make anything exceptional happen but he looked pretty solid on the pitch. For a young guy he is proving to be pretty consistent and is a pretty good player. Maybe won't get the time on the pitch against stronger countries but provides another midfield option.

90'Julian De Guzman 5/10- Again, like Beaulieu- Bourgault didn't really do anything exceptional. Has some really annoying over the bar shots but also provided a few very good balls for Canada. He certainly didn't do anything dominating but shouldn't be sent out of the Canadian midfield just yet. I still think Dunfield is a better look in his position.

68'Josh Simpson 6.5/10- Yes, he did score twice. This was very good for the Canadian international. But he wasn't really dominating like he should have been against a Caribbean Island nation. This is one of Canada's best technical players and one who they will need to preform exceptionally if they mean to make the 2014 Gold Cup. While he did have two goals he also made many mistakes. It was a good game from Simpson, but not great.

68'Atiba Hutchinson 6/10- He was a creative player for Canada. Certainly not to the level you would expect a player who plays for PSV but he did do quite a bit of good for Canada. His ball on the Simpson goal was exceptional. It is plays like that which will get Canada many more goals in this round. Hutchinson will only get better as the games go by.

22'Will Johnson 7/10- Cool, confident and clearly a player who fits in Canada's midfield. He has an exceptional finish on Canada's fourth goal and should be considered for a starting position against Puerto Rico. If Johnson can play this well for an extended period of time he will be an incredibly useful tool for Canada going forward.

90'Simeon Jackson 3.5/10- Jackson really, really wants to score. This you can see. But tonight despite some nice crosses and such his performance was pretty dismal. I really don't want to bring down one of our best talents but he is turning into a Rob Friend. This is bad news for Canada who really can't seem to find an effective Striker.

82'Iain Hume 7/10- Hume was exceptional in his return to the National side fold. He was the best offensive player on the night creating countless chances. Maybe he lacked a little bit of finish but I really think that will come with time if Hart continues to play him. Hume certainly impressed me.

22'Tosaint Ricketts 3.5/10- He really didn't do much. Obviously he didn't have much time or need to make an impact but he didn't at all. When you compare him with sub Will Johnson, who scored a goal and was involved in the play his performance looks all the more poor. But I think that Hart should keep giving Ricketts chances, Canada needs all the scoring options they can get.

8' Marcus Haber 5.5/10- One thing I noticed is just how tall this man really is. He is a giant, especially against a St. Lucian team who was fairly short. Haber wasn't bad at all when he came on and was fairly involved. He is a player who I wouldn't mind seeing on the field more often.

Going into the next game this is how I think Canada should line up considering everything that has happened in this last game and who performed well.

Jackson Hume
De Rosario
Simpson Hutchinson De Guzman Johnson
Jazic Klukowski Mckenna
Borjan

It could have been a disaster. At half time it looked like things could get off to a very, very bad start for Canada. But after De Guzman, Simpson and then Johnson potted goals everything was fine. From the start it was clear that Canada was by far the better team. Even after the match was tied moments after Simpson's opener it seemed like Canada would indeed get out of this game with full point undoubtedly.

Then came a very, very long time which demonstrated the worry of the crowd at half time. Canada just could not finish as they saw countless chances miss the net. Jackson was certainly not on his best finishing form tonight and neither was Dwayne De Rosario, making his first appearance at BMO Field since leaving it for New York earlier this year.

When Canada resumed at the half they once again took a dominating hold over the game in terms of possession. But once again they could not find the back of the net. This was becoming more and more worrying. You could see it on the faces of just about everyone in the stands.

Relief was provided, however, when Dwayne De Rosario was given a chance from the Penalty spot. The man had scored 2 goals from the spot during the CONCACAF Gold Cup earlier in the year and made it his third of the year when he potted another well taken effort from the spot.

Josh Simpson, who was pretty good on the night, then potted an excellent goal. The goal came off a ball from Hutchison that was about as perfectly placed as Simpson could have asked for. It was good to see these players hooking up, as they will be relied upon a lot in the upcoming matches.

Will Johnson finished off the night with an excellent tally set up expertly by Simeon Jackson. All Johnson had to do was finish to give Canada a 4-1 lead and just about a guaranteed victory at that point.

That is of course just one story of the match. Behind the scenes a lot more than this went on.

A lot, as usual, can be said about the refereeing. The diving and injury faking during this game was dismal as well. But really we don't need to talk about either of these things as they are only to be expected in CONCACAF. It was still none the less appalling and had to be mentioned as a footnote in this article.

Another thing that has to be mentioned is the crowd. Tonight it was a truly beautiful experience as 11,500 turned up to watch Canada proudly defeat their Caribbean counterparts. But among those 11,500 were about 100 St Lucian fans. This was incredible.

The devotion it would take to watch this match for these 100 fans was incredible. Especially when you consider the population of that country. When you look at it about 0.005% of the population of Saint Lucia was in that very stadium tonight. Most of them across from the Voyageurs supporters section.

They have a country of about 170,000 and yet they can still manage to bring 100 or more fans to a distant country to watch their match. Canada could learn something from these very dedicated fans.

This is taking nothing away from the fans who were actually at the stadium. They provided an incredible atmosphere that was clearly an inspiration to the players on the pitch. I never expected so many to turn out.

But, on the other hand if you were wondering about the percentage of Canadians who were in the stands it was 0.0003%, far away from the Saint Lucian numbers. But, on the other hand it was a home game and, should we have nearly sold out the stadium we could have had 0.0006% of our total population out to the match. So we couldn't have caught the Lucians even if we sold the place out.

I know the population percentages are ridiculous, but they are just for fun. But the fact that Saint Lucia had a higher percentage of their population out to the match than we did is slightly worrying. This is because they have to travel around 3700 km to get to the game. Most Canadians would have had to travel under 50 km.

If you are wondering the distance between Victoria and Toronto is 2072 km. So you get a picture of just how far these Saint Lucian fans had to travel, assuming of course that they did not all live in Toronto.

I honestly have fears for when Puerto Rico rolls around as they have a population of 2.5 million and are marginally closer to Canada at 3063 km. Their is also a fairly large Puerto Rico population in Canada.

If the Saint Lucia game tells us anything about the Puerto Rico game about 12,500 fans will show up for the game, eclipsing the total number at tonight's game. This doesn't even factor in the Puerto Rican population in Canada. While their is no official numbers on this I have to assume that about another 1,000 people can be calculated on to that 12,500 if you also factor in the shorter distance.

So BMO could once again be taken over by the opposition come next match. But, for one night it was refreshing to see the opposite happen. Even if it was against a Caribbean side with a population of about 170,000.

Tommorow in Part 2 we will break down in depth each of the Canadian players and how the performed and what changes should be made to the lineup before Canada's next match.

How Canada matches up against Saint Lucia

I was actually able to persuade myself to do a bit of research on the opposition Canada will be facing in its first match during CONCACAF World Cup...

I was actually able to persuade myself to do a bit of research on the opposition Canada will be facing in its first match during CONCACAF World Cup Qualification. Canada is clearly the better side, no doubt about that. But it is still interesting to have an in depth look at the opposition Canada will take on at BMO Field. Here are some basic facts about the Caribbean island. To begin with, the place is pretty beautiful. I could see the Canadian boys enjoying their stay in a Resort before the away tie.

St. Lucia "The Land, The People, The Light"
Capital: Castries
Languages: French Creole, English
Area: 616km2
Population: 173, 765
Currency: Caribbean Doller (XCD)

So what you can take out of this is that is it really, really small. The population of the country is smaller than 19 Canadian municipalities. This includes Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver, Ottawa-Gatineau, Calgary, Edmonton, Quebec, Winnipeg, Hamilton, London, Kitchener-Waterloo-Cambridge, St. Catherines, Halifax, Oshawa, Victoria, Windsor, Saskatoon, Regina and Sherbrooke. Even Saint Johns Newfoundland almost has more people in its metropolitan area than St. Lucia has in its entire country. Not only does it have a small population but it is also small in size. This is shocking 44 Canadian cities and towns are larger than the little Caribbean island. Now back to the team itself, here are some quick facts about the St. Lucia National Team. One thing you will remark tonight is that they have some pretty colourful uniforms.

St. Lucia National Football Team
Coach: Terrence Caroo (St. Lucia)
Stadium: Vieux Fort National Stadium
Highest Ranking: 108
Current Ranking: 187
First International: Jamaica 1-1 Draw (1989)

So at highest they are close to Canada's worst ever FIFA ranking. Terrence Caroo has been their coach since 2006 and is from St. Lucia. I could glean no other details about his former experience etc. Their national stadium, Vieux Fort National Stadium is officially called George Odlum Stadium. Odlum is a famous St. Lucian politician. The Stadium has a capacity of 9,000 and is located in Vieux Fort, St Lucia. Now we can look even deeper into this and look at the team on the field. Here is the Roster that St. Lucia used against Aruba earlier in the World Cup Qualifiers.

GK Iran Cassium (age 26) Mabouya Valley Rovers (St Lucia)
GK	Justin Joseph (age 19) Square United (St Lucia)
DF	Vernus Abbot (age 24) W Connection (Trinidad)
DF	Kurt Frederick (age 20) W Connection (Trinidad)
DF	Shervon Jack (age 24) South East Castries (St Lucia)
DF	Fabian Joseph (age 26) Mabouya Valley Rovers (St Lucia)
DF	Nathan Justin (age 30) Micoud (St Lucia)
DF	Pernal Williams (age 19) W Connection (St Lucia)
DF	Andreas Willie (age 26) Micoud (St Lucia)
MF	Rickson Augustin (age 28) Anse La Raye Young Stars (St Lucia)
MF	Hanif Dolor (age 29) Mabouya Valley Rovers (St Lucia)
MF	Enderson George (age 29) Micoud (St Lucia)
MF	Guy George (age 34) Micoud (St Lucia)
MF	Hiram Hunte (age 26) White House Dennery (St Lucia)
FW	Cornelius Butcher (age 31) Micoud (St Lucia)
FW	Zaccheus Polius (age 25)	Mabouya Valley Rovers (St Lucia)
FW	Troy Prosper (age 25)	Northern United (St Lucia)
FW	Magnam Valcin (age 25) Central Castries (St Lucia)

Funnily enough the first thing I remarked about this team was that they had a lot of players with double first names. Nathan Justin, Fabian Joseph, Guy George etc. This is obviously a pointless observation but was none the less the first one I made. You can also remark that a lot of them, 83% to be exact, play domestically with only 3 players (16.6%) play overseas. All of them play in the nearby island of Trinidad and Tobago. All for the same club, W Connection. While many countries, including England, Germany, Italy and Spain have a lot of players on their roster who play domestic football and are very successful I would say this is a bit different. When you look at the rosters of the teams that Canada will be playing against in the first round of this qualification process the more that play domestically the better. Canada, meanwhile, only has two players (Terry Dunfield and Julian De Guzman) who play domestically. 10.5% compared to 16.6% who do not play domestically for St Lucia. Canadians are quite spread out across the globe when it comes to club football actually, featuring in sides in Norway, Turkey, Germany, United States, England, Netherlands, Romania and Scotland. Only two players of the St Lucia roster have wikipedia pages (another pointless fact) but you can't glean much of either. Kurt Fredrick in fact has a wikipedia page that literally says this:
Kurt Frederick was born on 27 April 1991. He is an international soccer player from Saint Lucia, who plays as a left back for the St. Lucia national team
Nothing about his club situation, no stats, not even an age. Although you can quickly figure out it is 20 because of his birth-date. Also because it is posted above. The other player,Shervon Jack, has a little bit more information. Although not much more. He seems to be one of their better players, playing his club football with sides like Joe Public F.C (Trinidad) who you may remember from CONCACAF Champions League a few years ago. Finally, we look at what the St Lucia did to make it to this stage in the qualification process.

St Lucia met Aruba, as you already know in the First Round of the FIFA Qualification process for CONCACAF. They played a home and away series against the side with the results being the following:

Aruba 4 - 2 St Lucia
Kevin Edward and Cliff Valcin would score for St. Lucia. The match attendance would be 300 people at the Trinidad Stadium in Oranjestad, Aruba. The Referee would be Nolan Foster of the Cayman Islands.

St Lucia 4-2 (a.e.t) Aruba
Jamal Joseph would score a hattrick for Saint Lucia while Kurt Fredrick, the man with the oh so descriptive Wikipedia page, would score the aggregate tying goal for his nation. The team would win 5-4 on penalties with Nathan Justin, Zaine Pierre, Kevin Edwards, Kurt Fredrick and Pernal Williams all potting penalties to qualify the club for the next round.

Now, to conclude everything I will make my prediction. So that you know I have a specific system designated to predict this score, so it is not completely out of the air. With some statistical looks at both sides this is my prediction for tonight's match

Canada 10-0 St. Lucia

I do hope that this is not the result, but it is probably going to happen if you look at everything I just laid out before you above. I hope that most of all you have a good time at/watching the game and wish you good football for the rest of qualifying. Hoping to see a legion of Red at BMO Field tonight.
