Going to an "Irish" pub in the middle of Mendoza, which will be full of limeys, so will probably cheer for the US!

Can't both teams lose?

I hope it's going to be a cracker but I think it will be a dull game showing a severe lack of technique on both sides.
I think it's going to be a contest on who can kick the most long balls.

Has anyone noticed how much better the picture is on ABC? Same feed but far far sharper. It almost looks like HD in comparison. CBC is ripping us off. They're probably downgrading the SD picture to sell more HD subscriptions. Grrr....

If it's any consolation the HD picture is roughly the same quality on both CBC and ABC.

the US has most of posession but should create more opportunities... but they play well, show they can compete with the best, if it hadn't been for that early first goal
edit: i've got to say that the Radio-Canada picture is the best of the 3.

Hehe, I get it, however, it doesn't change the fact that I, as many others, was expecting an easy victory from England. Honestly, their keeper was an idiot. BTW draw or loss from the US, I thought they will be playing at least in the round of 16.

Nonsence....who are those many others? The Euros? The americans can give anybody game and that should be apparent to anyone who bothers to check the past results ( even in passing) over the past 8 years. People who think otherwise are buying the euro crap denial and falling back on the laziness of buying what their told instead of seeing for themselves. Eight years ago, the resident clown perdicted a 5-0 loss to Portugal but the Americans won the game. You'd think that some would have learned

Nonsence....who are those many others? It just shows that a lot people dont know much about the game. The americans can give anybody game .
+ the fact that England are a poor and mediocre team. They are just like an African team.
It's great to have 2 of them in your team but play 11 of them in a team and it's a joke. They have no clue how to break down opponents/ have no game plan and the English technique is so so so poor.
No short combinations, 1/2's over the floor, players that can create something with 1 touch or that can continually go past opponents.
They are shocking. Capello playing Rooney as a midfielder is hilarious as well. It's like giving a painter a violin and expect a Andre Rieu performance. Not going to happen...

I must say I underestimated the US. About the many others, I'll put it this way: I would be surprised if there were more people who bet for US instead of England. I don't consider myself that I'm in that euro crap denial but I still think that 3-2 victory of Brazil after losing 2-nil is more an exception than the rule.

I agree with your comments. You make a good point. I had high expectations from England, but after watching them play their first game, like the Argentineans, I conclude they are not a team who can win 7 games in this tournament.

Entertaining game.
Nice boot tackles. This is what you are defending if you start *****ing about diving. Hacking.
England was predictable. Not long ago I watched them draw with Andorra 0-0 at the half, under McClaren. Doubt they'll get on Capello's case like he deserves, like they did with McClaren, probably because he's better dressed. But he is a very boring coach and made serious errors today.
Starting with Lampard and Gerrard so far from the goal. Two defensive mids. Gerrard scored by ignoring Capello and going forward, almost by chance, indisipline.
Fabio erred starting Heskey, that is insulting. He adds nothing and anyone could figure that out.
England is one-dimensional, though usually pace and a sense of shame help overcome that with a goal or two more than the rival. They have absolutely no playing style, no dominance, no sense of working the options here or there to get past Howard.
I only liked two English players today, Johnson and Rooney.
English keeping: notoriously poor over the last decade, maybe even longer. Get let down a lot by it. I really can't understand it, what is happening in youth football in England that they don't teach fundamentals? Or enough of them?

I'm not sure it has anything to do with youth football as Robert Green is usually a pretty good keeper and has good technics. I think this was a mental mistake just like Petr Cech mistake during Euro 2008. England can produce keepers with a lot of skills but most of them are struggling in the mental part of goalkeeping.
Now the question is do you start Green for the next game?
I thought England were the dirtier of the two sides. Milner would have been sent off if he hadn't been subbed off, and Heskey was his usual lumbering self. The challenge he put into Howard's chest was very late, and just proves his clumsiness. Why are England managers so obsessed with him? Carragher is another who looked out of place, and was lucky not to even be booked for his challenge, on Altidore I think: got him with studs up, then a kick with the other leg for good measure. Altidore was dangerous tonight, and exposed an immobile English defence. The American speed was too much for them. And where was Rooney? He did absolutely nothing today. I think the Americans were full marks for their point. And as usual, the English come in as over rated and under talented.

Glen Johnson did impress me as well. Yet he's the guy that I knew the least about on that starting eleven

Anyone calling this game as anything but a draw before the game started would have been optomistic at best. England Ranked 8 but coming off a 50+ game regular season and a bench full of injuries, against a USA side with quality european based players and totaly underanked at 15th. If they had run the ranking numbers before the game Id speculate they would have read more like 10th v 12th- almost certain to produce a draw in the first game of any group based tournament
Anyway England out of the traps first , with stevie G reprising the 'Captain Fantastic goal of 1990 against France, (that ended up a draw as well).
Not looking overly threatened by an industrious if a lttle ineffective USA attack then Low and Behold an English Mishap scored by Addidas' inability to insert a pigs bladder inside a letherette sphere correctly! Be honst USA... that was a gift. Still if if you were handed the pink slip and keys for the very best theing in the toyota fleet from the 'Pres' himself you'd take it ...wouldn't you?
So all square at half time and que big Alexy Lalas on ABC backtracking on his 2-1 prediction, and no doubt plenty of UK media hacks choking on their pedictions of England thrashing the 'Minnows from across the Pond'.
Second half was good and balanced England 54% of the Possesion to the USA 's 48%. RG redeeming himself was the Key Point of the Game, as was coming to the conclusion that Alterdore (sic)obviously ran over a black cat on his way to signing his firt pro contract. But to me the stand out performance of the night was Onyewu's towering display in Defence for the US has to be the main reason for holding on to a deserved draw. Worth every Penny Milan spend on the guy. Intresting to see a young 'scotsman' on the field by the way, even if he did spend what little time he had on the field was spent mostly on his backside.
Result favoured bothsides, who would have settled for the draw at the start of the Day. With a bit of Luck England can finish Runners up and Avoid Australia- Thats one game i really dont want to have to sit through. Conclusion England were mediocre and can play better. USA we well organised and can make it difficult for ANYONE. Prediction both to make it to the Last eight, but no further. Ah well nevermind.

@ Alberta White
Capello is making life extremely difficult for himself > just as Dunga will. Both managers have picked a squad that is focussed on not losing and defending and they have both left a lot of technical footballers a home.
Capello should have taken Tom Huddlestone, Adam Johnson and Darren Bent to the world cup. I would have bet my house on Bent scoring the 1 on 1 that Heskey gloriously missed.
You could also see a lack of width and a man that can go past his opponents on the left. Adam Johnson would have been a perfect starter for them with Huddlestone in defensive mid and playing Lampard/Gerrard both behind Rooney.
I agree with the obsession with Heskey and Crouch. It's alright to bring one to the World Cup to force something when your behind but playing them from the start is a laugh.

Andre Rieu is a virtuoso? Comparing Rooney to him? A violinist for Europeans who grew up on the farm?

Super result for the US. Doubly good as it will do wonders for their own confidence while doing wonders for the pressure now on the English (and deservedly so).
Pretty disjointed match but it had it's moments I thought. First in group is going to be down to goal difference now, can't harp on enough about how important finishing 1st is and with Slovenia managing a win there may be some dramatics yet.
Good things happen when you shoot for goal, some times unexpectedly. Just ask Robert Koran and Clint Dempsey.
By the way, I'm quite sure Mr Howard is aching just a wee bit today. Youch.
Seeing Rooney playing shallow all the time makes me question the relationship between Capello's age and mental faculties.

Onyewu had a great game back there, especially considering his particular circumstance.
I think England will still top this group, regardless of the result in the other game today.
