Attendance was about 80 people on this mild overcast day with a sprinkling of rain starting just before halftime. This was the first game held at Esther Shiner Stadium in over a month because of the City of Toronto workers strike. The Astros played their home games at Downsview Park which is a federally owned park. This game was taped for broadcast later in the day on Rogers Community television. Try to see it or the rebroadcast and fill in the missing assists if you can. The most noticeable difference in this game and the Real Madrid vs. Toronto FC game last night was not so much the inaccurate shooting but this games number of offside calls.

This game was a surprise for me when the Astros started off so well with two goals so quickly. I expected Diego Maradona, Gershi Xhuti, and Adrian Pena would continue to run wild. Lions made an adjustment to a three man backline by ensuring a fourth defender was used and stopped the damage.

Referee Yuseri Rudolph had a quiet game giving out only one Yellow card by my count.

After the national anthem a moment of silence was held for Nerio Valdez, a 17 year old player on the Astros reserve team who was murdered a week ago.

They had only won two games this year but those wins were within the last three weeks. The Lions are the team they have to catch to make the final playoff spot although Portugal FC is also a catchable team.

At Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke, Serbian White Eagles extend their undefeated streak to 8 games (6 straight wins) with a 2-0 shutout over Portugal FC.

Goals by Sasa Viciknez and Alex Braletic. Shutout to Marko Petrovic

SWE honored Serbian-Canadian great Mike Stojanovic for his induction to the Canadian Hall of Fame by retiring the #9 jersey. Captain Sasa Viciknez presented the #9 to Stojanovic and Viciknez will now wear the #99.

In London, a surging Italia Shooters squad were led by Kedian Leckie's hat trick to a 5-0 romp over London City.

Shooters are hot of late and their roster is getting stronger for the stretch run. Should make for an interesting last few weeks of the season.

Sasa Viciknez wore #29 not #99 after he handed the #9 shirt to Mike Stojanovic.
I went to the game, there was a great atmosphere before and during the game. Portugal FC showed once again that against the White Eagles they always play some of their best games. Looking at the stats from last year in one of the betting sites (because the CSL website doesn't have any reliable stats), I notice that there were 4 games played between these to teams last season and SWE never beat PFC once in 2008. Portugal FC won two games 2-1 and 3-2 and tie the other two 1-1 and 3-3, even when they were down to 10 men (deserved red card to Andre Stuart for an elbow to the face of Radovic) they showed why they're such a difficult team every time they play the Serbian team.

Well taken free kick by Viciknez to the keeper's post, who was wrongly positioned behind the wall and never saw the shot coming. The second goal was a beauty, it started with a long cross by a defender to the second post and the ball was perfectly flicked back by a header from Tismenar, Braletic collected the ball by himself and beat the keeper with a hard low shot.

I notice captain Danny Amaral started the game as a central defender but move forward later as the game progressed. PFC had some chances in the second half but the SWE defense is playing better and better every game. I liked the one touch fast passing by SWE in the second half when they had Dimitrov, Lammie and Hurtis playing at front, something that doesn't happen when Viciknez is on the field, he is too much of a ball hog for my liking and definitely slows the play down too much some times. Dimitrov on the other hand is great to watch his speed on the wing, reminds me of those traditional right wingers from the past.

Portugal FC is got to be careful in the next couple of games if they don't want to be caught by the two tail riders NYA and LC.

Result of the Sunday August 9, 2009 CSL game between Toronto Croatia and St Catharines Wolves played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 8:15pm.

Result: game postponed because of the thunderstorm.

The players were introduced and the national anthem played but referee John Oliva called the teams aside and sent them back to the locker room. I estimated if the game had been played at about the 5 minute mark, the downpour started with sheets of rain blowing in from the north and the thunder and lightning which could be heard in the distance before game time moved overhead. The delay was to be 30 minutes but the rain was actually worse by 8:45pm.

I’m sure the league really wanted to play this game because they’ve passed the halfway mark of the season and games are hard to reschedule. The Wolves would have had a two hour drive to get here.

Centennial Stadium has been refurbished with field turf this year but also aluminum benches replacing the rotted wooden ones. Better safe than sorry. Many of the approximately 125 fans who were willing to dare that there wouldn’t be a storm retreated home before the half hour was over.

Ivan Zgela who was badly injured in last week’s game against TFC Academy had an ankle cast and a pair of crutches was taking cover under the stands and answered through a translator that he had a broken tibia and would be out six weeks.

The drive home was interesting as street lights and traffic lights were out in the area surrounding the stadium and part of the neighbourhood was in a blackout including the Tim Horton’s. A tree branch on a street near mine had fallen blocking the roadway. This was from this recent storm and not the storm we had just before lunchtime. I don’t remember Toronto ever having two thunderstorms in the same day.

thanks for the correction. I didn't make it to the game. I was told prior to the game that he was going to wear #99 but i guess that info was incorrect.

It was a classy move to retire Stojanovic's #9.
