Copa Sudamericana 2009

If CONMEBOL does the same as they have the last four tournaments then they will invite the top team from the Concacaf Champions League 2008-09 that is not Mexican and is not in the next years CCL to participate in the Copa Sudamericans 2009. The last years tournament ran from July - December.

Right now the only non mex teams left in the CCL are Houston, Marathon, Puerto Rico, and Montreal. Houston and Marathon have already qualified for the 2009-10 CCL so they wouldn't go. Puerto is automatically in the CFU Club championship semi final and as long as they win on of their two games they are in the 2009-10 CCL. So if Montreal doesn't win the Voyageurs Cup, and Puerto Rico makes it in to the 2009-10 CCL, then Montreal should be invited if CONMEBOL does the same as before.

Or maybe they'll ignore their recent trends and invite the best Costa Rican team not in the CCL (either Brujas FC or Herediano, that is unless Alajuelense doesn't qualify).

Or perhaps invite a 2nd Mexican team.

Either situation is as likely as inviting Montreal. Remember, those spots are invitations. They can give them to whomever they want.

Somehow I don't think Montreal would be a big draw down in South America.

I'm not sure that Brujas FC or Herediano would draw bigger. At least Montreal is a bit "exotic" from a sudamerican point of view.

DC United was invited so why not Montreal?

Montréal might not be a big draw in South America, agreed, but South America could perhaps be a very big draw in Montréal.

Of course, their are tons of factors which could influence whether Canadian participation in such a tournament would work, and whether CONMEBOL would be amenable to it.

^I may be wrong, as I'm no expert on South American football, but I don't think Boca play in the Copa Sudamericana very often, as they usually qualify for the Libertadores.

^^^They do. The tournament even gives them a free invite every year and a pass to the round of 16. River Plate gets similar treatment. This is part of why it's a more mickey mouse competition than Libertadores.

^I stand corrected. I thought when the Copa Sudamericana is described as South America's answer to the UEFA Cup, that it was a more literal comparison.
