Pick a winner and score. I'll keep score. Winner gets a free trip to watch all of Canada's games in South Africa 2010. Or bragging rights. One of the two anyway.

I'll start:

06.5.2009 - BMO Field - TFC 2 - Whitecaps 0
13.5.2009 - BMO Field - TFC 2 - Impact 0
20.5.2009 - Stade Saputo - Impact 1 - Whitecaps 0
27.5.2009 - Swangard - Whitecaps 1 - Impact 1
02.6.2009 - Swangard - Whitecaps 1 - TFC 1
17.6.2009 - Stade Saputo - Impact 0 - TFC 3

Final:

TFC 3-1-0 (8-1 +7) 10 pts
Mtr 1-1-2 (2-6 -2) 4 pts
Van 0-1-3 (2-5 -3) 1 Pts

Montreal goes into the final game needing to win by three. They open it up and are burnt. The tournament is essentially determined after the first two games.

I will go on record early to say that this should be TFC's year. There shouldn't be any cockiness with TFC this year, and they will actually have some Canadian on the field that care about the Voyageurs Cup.

Hmmm. Tricky. Hard to imagine Toronto not hoisting the Cup this year with the improvements they've made. That and this whole CONCACRAP Champions League run by the Impact is a wound in their pride which has been oozing all winter.

Not a lot of hope for the 'Caps so far (and they're the ones who sunk TFC last year!). Still, for it all I think it's going to be close again this year.

06.5.2009 - BMO Field - TFC-3 - Whitecaps-nil

Toronto 2W 2D 0L 8pts
Montreal 1W 2D 1L 5pts
Vancouver 1W 1D 2L 4pts

TFC returns the favour by going to Montreal and winning the Vs Cup in the last match.

There seems to be a lot of cockiness about the chances of the only professional club in Canada to win f*ck all last year. It seems that Toronto supporters have very short memories.

So far people from MTL have MTL winning the whole thing, people from Toronto have TFC winning and the only guy from Vancouver has the Whitecaps winning. The 2 posters from the ROC have TFC. I will join them, I think TFC will win this year but it won't be easy...

06.5.2009 - BMO Field - TFC 2-0 Whitecaps
13.5.2009 - BMO Field - TFC 1-1 Impact
20.5.2009 - Stade Saputo - Impact 2-1 Whitecaps

Barnsley went to the FA Cup semi-final in 2008. How much money would you have put on it happening in 2009?

The one place where USL teams can sometimes grab an advantage is depth. MLS' small roster size means that they are vulnerable to injuries. So the early start date is an advantage for TFC.
Very few people -- even people in Montreal -- will argue that the USL teams have better starters than TFC -- unless you think you can find Marvell Wynne, Amado Guevara, DeRo, Carl Robinson...etc in the USL. If it's starting XI v starting XI, any reasonable evaluation has to make TFC the favourite.

MLS will be a month into the season when the tournament starts - advantage TFC over Vancouver.

Remember that Toronto didn't actually lose a game to Montreal last year. Is it really that much of a stretch to say that they are *at least* equal this year?

TFC's problem in the tournament last year was that it did not convert in the final third. In the second half of the July 1 game (were the tournament was really lost) Toronto probably had 10 point blank scoring chances. If they have addressed that problem (and they have added Barrett, DeRo and Vitti into the mix since then) then I don't think it's possible to argue that they shouldn't be the favourite.

Clearly upsets can happen. But, if it does it will still be an upset.

Why don't you break down the line-ups and tell me why Montreal or Vancouver should be the favourite.

I picked TFC but I'm still hoping for my Caps to pull off the upset, several upsets.

With all their additions and especially the signing of Adrian I'm seriously concerned. Last year Brennan was gung ho but a lot of the others were floating. With a larger Canadian contingent this year and Dicio saying he "wants to win something" I can see all TFC players being a lot more involved and into the Voyageurs Cup this year.

Like last year the TFC are the team to beat and like last year yes they can be beat.

Too much turnover in Vancouver and too many solid additions for TFC. Montreal will compete hard but Toronto will come away victorious.

looking at the scorelines last year, things were extremely close. So the best USL teams were about on par with the worst (or almost worst) MLS team.

Montreal couldn't beat TFC... the last game they played probably should have been TFC's win based on the run of play, particularly in the second half. I was sitting in the North end at BMO and nearly got a sore neck looking down to the south end for 45 minutes as TFC got chance after chance... (too bad TFC fans had to watch Jeff Cunningham blow a sitter). The game TFC played in Vancouver saw some of the finest TFC play in the Voyageurs Cup (Rohan Ricketts was particularly dominating).. but a stupid mistake by a midfielder playing defense (Edu) led to a tie, not a win. Let's not forget Vancouver's win against TFC was founded on a debatable penalty kick call. These are very close results.

So while Montreal did indeed win on points, it could have easily gone the other way. I think Montreal has to worry about Vancouver the most -- beating Vancouver twice was their way into the Champions League. I bet Vancouver will be gunning to make sure that doesn't happen again.

Since Vancouver is clearly rebuilding and the games come relatively early in our season, I don't think we are a good bet. Too bad because I'd love to go to watch a team from Haiti or Panama or something in the preliminary round of the Concacaf Champions this summer. But I think that the Caps will not get into a groove until well into the season, too many young players, changes, and the obvious rebuilding program.

Montreal has the advantage of having started early, but could get a long break if Santos takes them out, almost two months worth. Not so great for them. And I have to admit that in spite of the draw at Swangard last year TFC was the most talented side, they just did not play to their potential.

Meaning I am leaning towards, you guessed it...

Re-tooling.

The turnover is for improvement. Rebuilding suggests low expectations. Expectations by the club for the squad they are putting together is pretty high, probably higher then what Vancouver fans expect. Definitely not a rebuild.

no sense in even trying to predict. anyone can win this thing. i dont think even any southsiders predicted the Whitecaps win in Toronto last year.

this tourny has nothing to do with names on paper, or reputation, or even your current league form or your overall skills. The Vs cup is won by whoever wants it more. Whoever cares the most. Whoever happens to have the most hustle on a given day.

The young players on the Caps will be hungry, so I don't count them out. Montreal has a better backline and better keeping that TFC, no doubt, and they have the best and smartest coach in Canada.

This will be close, and will come down to the last game in MTL.

If Teitur got better league results from Caps than John from Impact, and if Caps knocked out Impact, if Caps won the league Impact is in, doing better than a concachampions quarter finalist, then who is the better coach?

Sort of an Adam delved and Eve spanned question ain't it?

Key for the Impact is a good result at BMO to start cause the Caps won't have Sebrango this year to put a dagger in TFC's heart so we can't rely on them for any help.

In any handicap of the V cup you have to look at the TFC lack of experience in any big games, and that really gives the advantage to the Impact in terms of experience and ability to harness a desire to win.

TFC under the Mo and Jo duality have little real emotion and precious little big game experience in the recent past.

So, I would rank Montreal over TFC in the home and home, MTL versus Whitecaps.. I would think Sebrango will want to make some statements to the Van fans and the cabel that has ignored him for national team duty so give a split perhaps but Montreal on points.

I still think MOntreal is going to go after the Laguna scientifico as loan player, this summer.

I can just see him ripping the TFC defence.
