A couple of big upsets in the first night of matches:
Trinidad's Joe Public beats New England 2-1: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Soccer/2008/08/26/6582131-ap.html
Panama's Tauro beats Chivas USA 2-0: http://slam.canoe.ca/Slam/Soccer/2008/08/26/6582076-ap.html

If Impact wins tonight, why going to MLS? :D
They (NE Revolution and Chivas) were unable to win "easily" to second zone teams? :)
Why going to an interior league? [:p]
Go Impact Go!

If Montreal puts on a performance like they did against TFC or the Whitecaps, they should be fine. I still think they were the best choice to come out of Canada and represent the country in this competition, they are a fast, skilled squad.

^ I agree. I love TFC but the better team won. They wanted it more than the others. Now if Canada could get 2 spots.. poor Hankook Verde.

Good win for the impact. With a sold out crowd behind them. It would of been nice to get a second goal but whatever ill take it.

Hmm, it's good to some people here realising it's Montreal playing, not Toronto.
On the RPB site, every third post is how Toronto should be there, and Toronto would steamroll Esteli. Those posts are broken up by 2-3 guys commenting on the play respectfully, and one curious fellow who said the supporters were disrespectful?
Anyways, the RPB aren't worth a second look, so I've had my fun reading the thread.

Hey teh games were away. It`s not like the Impact won in Nicaragua and even that they are going to play to Honduras. The Impact were lucky to get one of those 2 minnows. (Hankook being the other)
I am not convinced and wouldn`t be surprised that they would be bounced.

The Impact joined MISL? When?

After watching the game in French CBC, many of the French commentators have said that the Impact players and coach knew very little about this team. All the information they managed to assembled came directly from newspaper clips from Nicaragua or from the Internet. As a result, this had a major psychological disadvantage on the Impact players. Nevertheless, they expect that the return game in Honduras will be very different now that the Impact have managed to see first hand as to who are Real Esteli.

Puerto Rico posted a 1-1 draw against recent CONCACAF Champions Cup winners Alajuelense. While not at good as a win it is a nice feather in their cap.
As to TFC being the best Canadian club? Not this year. Play like they mean it and maybe next year.

And at least we, as the nation of canada, excluding Vancouverites, can call you guys losers.
After tonight's results(Montreal advancing, Chivas and New England being eliminated) that leaves two USL teams, vs. two MLS teams.

Aside from the payroll there's not that much difference between these two leagues.

Puerto Rico managed to pull if off. What a major coup for the USL.

Montreal was actually lucky, they got a weak team in the draw and managed to go through despite playing nowhere near as good as they can. But PR had a tough draw and did really well to go through. I'm definetly surprised that New England did'nt go through and I'm looking forward to see Joe Public at Saputo, we will see if they are for real.
