Since we don't have the Lynx anymore to do circular trades, we'll use the Whitecaps (or Impact B ;)).

Tiesto, Gjertsen <--> Marcina, Ze Roberto

The Montreal Impact has acquired forward Joey Gjertsen and midfielder David Testo from the Vancouver Whitecaps, in return for midfielder Zé Roberto and forward Alen Marcina, before the July 30 roster freeze.

Gjertsen, a 25-year old American, was playing with the Whitecaps since the 2005 season. Last year, he was named the USL First Division Most Valuable Player after leading the Whitecaps in points with 12 goals and seven assists for 31 points. This season, he had tallied three goals and one assist (seven points) in 19 games and 1,365 minutes of play.

Testo, who will turn 26 on August 7, is also playing his third campaign in the USL D1. After playing his rookie season with the Richmond Kickers, in 2003, Testo, also a US native, spent the next two seasons with the Columbus Crew (MLS), before joining the Whitecaps in 2006. This year, he tallied one goal and one assist in 1,012 minutes. He had also one goal and three assists, in five games, during last year’s playoffs.

“We have acquired two quality players who were instrumental in the Whitecaps championship last year,” said Montreal Impact head coach Nick De Santis. “Vancouver is also going through rough moments and they needed a change. Both players have great qualities and speed. We hope they will help us get back our level of play.”

Brazilian Zé Roberto will have played six seasons in Montreal, tallying 17 goals and 17 assists (51 points) in 127 games (115 starts) and 10,560 minutes. In 15 games this year with the Impact, he had only one assist.

Forward Alen Marcina had only made a brief stop in Montreal. Acquired on June 14 from the Puerto Rico Islanders in return for midfielder Lars Lyssand and other considerations, Marcina scored one goal and added one assist in eight games with the Impact.

“To acquire great players, you have to give good players in return,” added De Santis. “Zé has offered great services to the team in the last few years. He always gave body and soul to the club. Unfortunately, it took time for him to recuperate from a number of injuries.”

Note that the Impact, which is off since its last 1-1 tie in Minnesota on July 18, will face the Carolina RailHawks on Wednesday, August 1st, at Claude-Robillard Sports Complex, at 7 pm (CJAD 800, USLlive.com). Note that Gjertsen and Testo will play against their former Whitecaps teammates, Saturday, August 18, in Vancouver.

Looks like Montreal got the better of this deal unless Marcina can score the same number of goals as last year (in which case the trade is still probably a tie at best). It must suck getting traded on a USL salary.

Ze Roberto is the biggest "impact" player in the deal. Gjertson really struggled and was completely 1 dimensional this season. Testo was lazy even though he was played out of position.

Gjertson was also playing out his option, so the Whitecaps would have recieved nothing for him at the end of the season.

I can't speak to the form of Gjertson and Testo this year but they played very well last year as did Marcina. Nor do I know the details of the contracts. Ze Roberto is a decent solid midfielder but also pretty mediocre. He will be a steady starter for the Caps but won't excel either. The other three players all have the potential to be outstanding USL players when they are on form. With Ze Roberto you know what you are going to get but it will be the performance of the other three that will decide who wins this trade.

With a more and more Hershey 2001 look, Vancouver will be rebranded the "Whitecats"

Gjertsen was a bum this season. Testo...well Calgary Boomer already mentioned him.

Bob Lilly, the MVP killer. Last season it was Jordan, this season Gjertsen.

I haven't been to any games this season, but I really like Gjertsen last year. He was quick and lethal. As for Testo, he was servicable off the bench, and shouldn't be too much of a loss.

The frustrating thing is that Marcina was available on a free at the beginning of the season. Hopefully this helps the Caps who've struggled after a great start.

I think Marcina also had a trial with Vancouver last year, or the year before.

The trade doesn't get made without Ze. He's one of "Bob's boys" and brings something totally different. Mediocre, or just quietly effective. Every game I've seen him play, he's been the hardest working player on the field.

The best potential player out of any of the one's invovled today is actually Josh Hansen from California. I'm excited about him.

Agree about Ze being of of "Bob's boys" When Lilley coached in Montreal, he was constantly singing his praises. I like Ze Roberto, but I am not sure why he was having so little impact the last few years. Injuries have certainly been a factor but he has too much talent to be invisible so often. I am sure the change of scenery will do him good as will playing with Sebrango.

I like this trade ... for shake up value alone sends a message to the players that a league MVP one year does not gaurantee you a free ride. I think Lilley knew the chances of losing Gjertsen at the end of the season to MLS was very good so cut your losses and trade him. As for Testo I found him too soft of player never chalenged for loose balls and generally wanted the ball delivered to him and again another guy I think that played his last year for the Caps so would not be back in 08 most likely to Carolina close to his family. So I'm giving Lilley his props on this deal.

Gjertsen isn't heading to MLS based on his play this season.

I guess Lilley gave up on trying to motivate him ...your right not doing anything this year will get you benched in the USL and no MLS dreams ...

The Caps have a new Canadian midfielder at practice this week - Rob Sing, who played Div 2 in Switzerland last year.

BTW, Gjertsen is playing pretty well with us so far (good movement just behind the strikers). Testo has been unremarkable.
