Preview from the Whitecaps

July 11, 2007 - Vancouver Whitecaps FC men complete a six-game road stand when they visit Pacific Northwest rivals Seattle Sounders on Thursday evening.

After claiming a win, three draws, and a defeat on their recent five-game road trip through the southeastern US and Puerto Rico, Bob Lilley’s side will look to claim their first points in the Cascadia Cup when they meet the Sounders in this season’s third I-5 derby clash. More importantly, Thursday’s game at Qwest Field is crucial in terms of the USL-1 standings, as the league-leaders Vancouver are just two points ahead of Seattle, who currently sit in third place.

The Whitecaps have enjoyed great success against Brian Schmetzer’s Sounders so far this season, having already claimed two victories against the Washington State outfit earlier in the campaign. A second-half goal from Eddy Sebrango gave the Whitecaps a 1-0 home win over Seattle in both clubs’ season opener on April 21 before Lilley’s side built on that result by claiming their first win in Seattle since 2002 and their first-ever victory at Qwest Field with a 3-1 success on May 12.

Despite the victories, Thursday’s game may prove to be a more difficult contest for the Whitecaps, as Seattle have been in fine form in recent weeks. Schmetzer’s side had a successful four-game road trip after claiming three wins and a draw on their travels. In fact, the Sounders have only lost once in their last seven games, with that defeat coming at home to another Canadian side in Montreal Impact on June 23. Seattle have also had more than a week to prepare for the visit of the Whitecaps, having claimed an important 1-0 win at fellow USL-1 challengers Rochester Raging Rhinos on July 3.

With his team having just returned home from their long road trip, Lilley hopes his side shake off the effects of their recent excursions and put in another big performance in Seattle. “I wished we had a little more time to prepare,” Lilley told whitecapsfc.com. “It’s a quick turnaround and a massive task that has been set in front of us. We must find a way to sum up our energies and get our mindset right for the games ahead.”

Following Thursday’s game, the Whitecaps will have little time to prepare for their first home match in over a month, as a well-rested Miami FC comes to Swangard Stadium for the second part of a double-header date on Saturday. On the other hand, Lilley’s side can now look forward to finishing their regular-season campaign in the Pacific Northwest region, with Seattle set visit Swangard one more time on July 27.
