USL News Release

Thursday, February 22, 2007

TAMPA, FL -- USL and Turner Broadcasting announced a partnership to provide exclusive online video streaming of USL First Division matches featuring all 13 clubs beginning April 2007 through the 2009 season. The matches, which cannot be found on traditional broadcast or cable television distribution, will be available on the new broadband channel USL Live at www.USLLive.com, launching early April 2007.

USL Live will utilize Turner’s expertise in operating and managing new media businesses for other sports properties including NASCAR.com, PGATour.com, PGA.com and ACCSelect.com. ACC Select, a broadband network that was launched in September of 2006 as a partnership among the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), Raycom Sports, Lincoln Financial Sports and Turner, broadcasts more than 600 of the conference’s non-televised sports events each academic year.

“We are extremely excited to announce the launch of this initiative,” said USL executive vice president and chief operating officer Tim Holt. “Our previous forays into online broadcasting showed great potential and we are confident that what Turner brings to this partnership will make USL Live a tremendous hit with our fans around the globe. This broadcast program will enable the most widespread exposure of USL soccer and, in particular, USL First Division soccer in the 20-year history of USL.”

“The launch of USL Live is an exciting endeavor as it will not only give die-hard soccer fans greater access to the sport they love, but it will also help to expose casual fans to the thrilling competitions of the one of the world’s most popular sports,” said Phil Sharpe, SVP/GM of Turner Sports’ Play ON! division. “We’re excited to work alongside the USL to bring their match-ups to fans around the country and extremely proud to continue to lead the charge in providing cutting-edge online sports coverage.”

USL Live is a new broadband experience that gives fans the best seat in the house for the sport they love, the soccer teams they care about and the games not available anywhere else. With full-screen video delivered right to the computer, USL Live provides front row access to USL events whenever fans want—live or on-demand replay. Consumers can watch USL First Division matches live or on-demand on a per-event basis or with a monthly all-event pass or season-long pass. Package pricing and the event schedule will be announced at a later date.

Great! Especially the on-demand part, because if you're going to subscribe then you don't want to be forced to be at your computer during every game.

But, I wish they'd cut the typical crap out of the release and provide some more info that is actually useful. (I mean, really, what is the point of crap like "The launch of USL Live is an exciting endeavor as it will not only give die-hard soccer fans greater access to the sport they love, but it will also help to expose casual fans to the thrilling competitions of the one of the world’s most popular sports. I can accept that they aren't ready to release prices yet, but how about some clarification on what they mean by "monthly all-event pass" and "season-long pass". Do those refer to every match for a particular team or the entire league? They should offer both options, though if the entire league is cheap enough, like it is for MLS, then I wouldn't complain about a lack of team-specific packages.

Season package information is released today. Essentially, $49.99US (if subscribed to service prior to May 1st) for complete regular season and play-off coverage of all matches. I tried to register but when asked to input state/prov, only US states listed. I have emailed them to review this problem, as well as to confirm the acceptance of Canadian postal codes.

Sounds like a really good deal. I'm jiggy wit' it.

That "60% off" is as opposed to 12 monthly packages.

One can see that 1 month is around 10$. And the season lasts 6 months (April-September). So you'd only be saving 10$ (50$ instead of 60$) for the entire reason.

Pretty lame marketing, IMO.

For coverage of 28 matches per team? Plus playoffs? You do the math.

They do list Canada and Puerto Rico. I have mailed them on Tuesday to ask about getting this living here in Europe, two nice mails telling me how well I registered (?) and a promise to get back to me in 24 hours, one of those committment to our customer type statements. We'll see if they can tell me anything today.

Yeah, I'm still awaiting a reply myself. I think just selecting Canada for now should work. As long as we have a valid credit card number....

Maybe if I punch in Puerto Rico they'll figure Barcelona-España is a plantation on an agricultural district on the island and let me see the damn games.

FYI to all of us in the Great White North, eh?

Thanks for contacting the USL Live, powered by Play ON! Customer Support Team. We're glad to see that you're interested in becoming a subscriber to USL Live - it's the closest thing to actually being at the event! After looking into your situation, I think I've found something that may help:

<As of right now, you have to have a USA billing address & credit card in order to sign up for the service. I do apologize for the inconvenience. You could use a family member's or friend's card if they would let you and you could pay them back. Otherwise, wait until we expand outside of the USA.>
For future reference, click http://usl.playonsports.tv/help.html to visit our FAQ page that lists detailed responses to all of our most frequent questions

I hope this helped. Please don't hesitate to contact me if I can assist in any other way.

Enjoy your subscription to USL Live, powered by Play ON!

This seems to be a big GFY to fans of the Whitecaps and Impact, but it seems in the registration form that you *can* select Canada.

So which is it?

I got the same mail.

Okay, you need an American credit card. That is totally discriminatory to fans in Canada, where USL is also active. So Impact and Caps fans can't see their teams while the Americans can? What kind of deal is that they have come up with, how could they even sign in on those terms?

Enjoy your subscription to USL Live, powered by Play ON!Pfft, what's with that last line?

Never mind writing to the people running this, now it's time to contact the USL. What bothers me most is that there was absolutely no mention of Canadians not being allowed to subscribe, no thought about Canada shown anywhere.

There are a few Mickey Mouse aspects to this operation. At this point I wouldn't join even if I could. I'm not confident that it's going to work properly. It may be better to see how things go and then subscribe to smaller/cheaper packages later in the season if others are satisfied.

I have word back from the Whitecaps and they were not aware of this but have stated that they are taking this very seriously. They are now in touch with their contacts with the USL and with Turner Broadcasting to have it resolved.

That's right. The matter of Cdn billing was resolved yesterday afternoon. Credit card subscriptions are being billed today.
