Ugh. I'll take 10 Portugal-Dutch games over that any day. Say what you will about that match yesterday, it was utterly watchable.
The Swiss took the worst penalties I've seen in quite a while.

oof. I kept on going to watch the game in Winnipeg Square. And I kept leaving as the game was painful to watch.:( The radio announcers and soccernet ticker describer were horrified by the game.[B)] Could the Swiss be more awful at penalties?[xx(]
But YAY, the hunkies are through!!!! :D

Another bizarro coaching decision from an otherwise excellent coach - why do you take off you best scorer (Frei) five minutes before an imminent penalty shoot out? No wonder Frei looked so pissed. Obviously he wouldn't have been able to take all the penalties but a goal after Shevchenko missed would have given the subsequent shooters more confidence and likely less nerves.

I was commenting the same thing about the previous match in the bar, and a guy turns and smiles. From Portugal, from Oporto but a Benfica supporter. We both left at the middle of extra time. It was not like they were not playing, just that after Portugal-Holland both games on Monday were so dull and uninspiring. Nice guys, a bunch of nice guys playing football. Thought I was watching Spanish 2nd division, Recreativo Huelva vs Real Murcia, the noon game on Sunday you watch over brunch.
Got a good lowdown on how Portugal will play England from this fellow, very pleasant and knowledgable about his team and still on a high from the previous night. Seems it will be Petit for Costinha, and Tiago for Deco. May not be overly affected by these changes.
As for why you take out a striker, they say that a tired player will miss. Still, usually a striker is more experienced in putting in penalties as it is his job to shoot hard into corners and the like.

Not so sure about that 1st part. The Portugal-Holland match was only more watchable in the same way two squeege kids who are scrapping over the same corner of an intersection is. Sure, vulgar entertainment, but precious little to do with football.
As to the 2nd part, impossable to argue with. (Will mention that this allowing the 'keep to move along the line before the ball's struck has had a positive effect in my opinion. Not much but some).
I don't know if the teams got a good talking to before the match by FIFA or what, but Geezus it was a very friendly affair for the most part. Did see some cracking text-book tackles by the Ukrainians though. Beautiful, clean, legal and enthusiastic tackles in at times dangerous positions.
Pity that intensity was lacking for the other 85% of the match play.

Switzerland was just horrible at taking PK's. Frei should have been left on, I'm sure the game would have been different.

And let's not forget that they (Swiss and Ukrainians) made our favorite Mexican ref look like the best ref in this second round, he'll surely get a 1/4 game.......

You are right there. It was like the cards and hard foul budget had been spent the previous night's celebration and the staff had been asked to tighten the belt and bear down till the end of the current quarter.
