It should have been a straightforward weekend. Chelsea were due to host Arsenal in the quarter-finals of the FA Cup - a match they would not have been widely fancied to win unless, say, a World Cup winner were unexpectedly to join their ranks.

But that is exactly what appeared to be happening as word spread that Tiffeny Milbrett - a name as famous in the United States as Mia Hamm and Brandi Chastain - was to fly to London along with the Canada international Christine Sinclair in time to keep Chelsea in the Premiership.

LONDON -- American Tiffeny Milbrett is set to join the Chelsea Ladies FC.

The 35-year-old Milbrett, who won the 1999 World Cup and Olympic gold in 1996 with the U.S. team, has scored 100 goals in 204 international appearances.

Christine Sinclair of Canada also signed to play for Chelsea in the FA Women's Premier League.

Chelsea director of communications Simon Greenberg said the club is waiting for work permits for the pair.

"If we can't get the necessary approvals for this season, we will be looking at next season," Greenberg said Monday. "This is not just about bringing them in (for) the short term."

Chelsea Ladies is next-to-last in the league. With only two games left, the team is headed for a relegation playoff. The league will expand from 10 teams to 12 next year.

Milbrett and Sinclair play for the Vancouver Whitecaps, but their Premier League commitments won't clash.

TORONTO (CP) _ Visa problems will prevent Canadian soccer star Christine Sinclair for playing with Chelsea's FA Women's Premier League team, the Globe and Mail reported Thursday.

Sinclair has reportedly had trouble obtaining a work visa from the British government.

Sinclair, a 22-year-old from Burnaby, B.C., led the University of Portland to the NCAA title and an undefeated season in 2005, setting an NCAA scoring record in the process. She also won the MAC Hermann Trophy as the top collegiate women's soccer player for the second year in a row.

Sinclair has 53 goals in 71 outings for the Canadian World Cup team.

What the hell?

She's one of the most prolific goal scorers in women's soccer. How could she not get a work permit?

The fact that she's not being paid to play for the 86ers or is that the Lady Fishnet Stockings probably will mean that she's not taking coin from some local young things earnings...

I bet she's on a tourist visa--if that.
