Mexico to Host U20 Women's Qualifying Tournament

New York - The CONCACAF Executive Committee confirmed during their meeting today in New York City that Mexico will host the 2006 CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Final Round Qualification scheduled for 18-27 January.

The eight-team tournament, which will qualify three CONCACAF nations to the 2006 FIFA U-20 World Championship in Russia from 17 August – 3 September, will take place at the Stadiums of Rafael Murillo Vidal in Cordoba and Luis Pirata Fuentes in Veracruz.

The draw for the two four-team groups of the 2006 Women’s U-20 Final Round was also held today during the Executive Committee meeting.

The host, Mexico was placed into Group A and they were drawn with the defending CONCACAF champion, Canada, the Union Centroamericana de Fútbol (UNCAF) Triangular 1 Winner, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago from the Caribbean Football Union (CFU).

Group B, has the winner of the UNCAF Triangular 2 (to be determined by games this week in Guatemala), the USA along with Jamaica and Surinam from the CFU.

CONCACAF will announce in due course the schedule of matches and kickoff times for both venues.

The winners and runners-up of each group will earn a place in the event’s semifinals with the winners of those games earning a place as CONCACAF representatives in FIFA’s U-20 Women’s World Championship. CONCACAF’s third spot in the FIFA event will be determined by a third-place play-off game between the two losing semifinalists.

This is the first time that CONCACAF has staged a qualifying event for the Women’s U-20 World Championship. The other CONCACAF Women’s Youth Tournaments were at the U-19 level in Trinidad & Tobago and Canada in 2002 and 2004, respectively.

Group A looks tougher than group B. I think our girls will qualify but it ain't going to be a walk on the park.

Group A probably is a little tougher, but we were going to get either Mexico or the United States. I would rather have Mexico at this point... even with the tournament being played in Mexico.

Hopefully we can finish first and avoid the USA in the semi-finals. Even a tie would be okay against Mexico if have better GD.

Yeah i think it is going to be tough but if they are concentrated and have there mind set they hopefully will do fine. But yes it is true Group A seems tougher than B. we will just have to play hard to dominate.

i have bell expressvu, and i haven't had any luck finding the games. Considering there are only a handfull of important tournaments for canadian soccer, you would think that they could televise them. Without exposure, how can soccercanada expect support

When did FIFA change the age group from U-19 to U-20?
