Germany and Canada both advance, but first place in the group will play a 3rd-place team in the quarterfinals while second place will play the second place team from Group B. Germany wins first with a win or draw vs Canada while the Canadians have to beat Germany to win the group. Australia should beat Thailand, but they'll have to wait and see if 3 pts is enough to be one of the two best 3rd-place teams. As goal difference is the first tie-breaker (after pts) between 3rd-place teams, they'll want to run up the score vs the hapless Thais.

Group B situation with 2 games played:

China has advanced and just needs to tie with Brazil in their final game to win the group. This would get them a match vs the 2nd place team in Group C in the quarterfinals. Finishing second gets a match vs Germany or Canada. If Brazil beats China and Nigeria beats Italy, there would a 3-way tie on 6 pts. All 3 teams would advance, and goal difference in the games among the 3 teams would determine the placements. If Brazil wins and Nigeria fails to defeat Italy, then Brazil would win the group with China second. A tie for Nigeria is enough for them to advance, either in 2nd or 3rd.

Italy's only chance to advance is to beat Nigeria. If they do, and Brazil beats China, then Italy gets 3rd place and waits with Australia to see if it's enough.
If Italy wins, and China beats Brazil, then it's a 3-way tie for second.

So the situation in Group C is this:

USA needs only to get a draw vs Spain in their final group match to clinch the top spot and a QF game vs the 3rd-place team out of group A or B.

4 pts is enough to clinch one of the two best 3rd-place spots, so Russia and Spain will also advance with a tie or win in their games. Obviously, Spain has the tougher task vs the USA while Russia faces Korea. Russia clinches second with a win over Korea, which would get them a QF matchup vs the top team in Group B.

Korea can still finish as high as second in the group, but they must beat Russia by at least 3 goals. If this happens, and Spain loses to the US, then it's a 3-way tie for second. Goal difference would be the tie-breaker, and Korea would get second place in the group. There is also a chance of Korea going through in 3rd place if they win by less than 3 (or if Spain gets a point vs the US), but it's not likely.

5. The ranking of each team in each group shall be determined as follows:

Doubtful. China would have to outscore Brazil by about 4 or more goals, and that is not going to happen because China is not a high scoring team. I think the 3rd place in group B goes through because of goal differential amongst the third place teams, and that will be either Brazil or Nigeria (unless Italy beats Nigeria by a margin of 3 or more, which aint gonna happen).

The real battle is between 3rd place in Group A (Australia) and Group C (either Spain or Korea). Australia is in the far better position than Spain or Korea, because, although they are now 2 behind on goal differential, they should be able to make up the points against Thailand.

Not doom and gloom at all. Canada will have to play their best game so far to earn a tie or win against Germany. The other scores look plausible to me except USA-Spain. I can't see Spain coming that close. Based on the results so far it looks to me like the USA will coast to the final as they did in 2002.

Anyone else find it strange that the final Group C games are not being played simultaneously with those of the other groups. It seems to me that this gives the eventual third place finisher of this group an advantage over those of the other groups in that it knows the result it needs to advance beforehand.

Yeah.

However the final match games for Groups A and B are not played simultaneously vis a vis the other Groups any way, so Group A has the bigger advantage.

With a 12 team format, there are always going to be hiccups. That's why if you are going to have more than 8, you should try to go for 16.

At least the system is fairer than the Gold Cup, where the 12 teams were in Groups of 3, so the last two teams in each group have an advantage.

A more plausible scenario might be if China beats Brazil by more goals than Italy beats Nigeria. Then Brazil, Italy, and Nigeria will all have 3 points, and Brazil will finish last in the group on goal difference!

Note highlighted quotes from coach. German coach may be using strategy of least resistance to finals. Winning or even tying tomorrow means Germany's route to final match may go thru Brazil and the USA, and she is concentrating on the semi.

Bridge's philosophy (and I don't disagree with it) is plow staight ahead and go on the high road.

There are five days between tomorrow's match and Sunday's quarterfinals, so plenty of time to recover. Both teams are tough, but Germany leads in fouls. I don't know that much about Germany, but they are German and I can never think about German football without thinking of the initial match against Hungary in 1954 when their strategy was to play subs, lose, and to weaken the superior Hungarians for the final match. Someone at GoBigRed has suggested that we further rest Zurrer until the quarters to allow her to fully recover, and that may be a good idea. The big thing to be concerned about (but not worry about) is injuries. I think that what will characterize the match menu the most will be rough play, not goals as suggested in the article. Yellow card acculmulation will not be an immediate concern for Canada, as they do not have any now.

With the top three goal scorers from the FIFA U-19 Women's World Championship Thailand 2004 set to take to the Supachalasai pitch on 16 November, the final Group A match between Germany and Canada is bound to be a scintillating affair of attacking football.

Canadian striker Brittany Timko rules the scoring tables with an astonishing five goals from two matches. Both against Australia in a 2-1 win on 10 November, and a dominant hat-trick against poor hosts Thailand three days later saw the striker up the ladder, two out in front of the closest chasers.

"Who me?"

Humble and affable, the youngster is hardly willing to take credit for her tremendous strike rate. "It's just great service from my team mates," she repeated after both matches. "Their service is so good, all I have to do is poke the goals in."

Her Coach Ian Bridge - a FIFA World Cup veteran from Mexico '86 in his own right - is quick to point to the player's smashing ability. "She's only just moved to striker, from a midfielder's role," the coach said, "But she's doing a great job getting goals for us at the minute. She may not be a pure goal scorer, but she's doing a good impression right now.

Five goals away from tying her teammate from Canada 2002 Christine Sinclair's incredible record of ten goals at the finals two years ago, the player is hardly concerned with such trivialities. "It's not about scoring records," the player recently told FIFA.com, "it's about the team winning."

Germans on Timko's tail

Though Timko may be two ahead in the tables, Germany's dynamic attacking duo of Anja Mittag and Celia Okoyino Da Mbabi are not far behind. With three apiece from matches with Thailand and Australia, the two are in smashing form.

Though both sides are free-scoring, Germany may have the edge in terms of defence. They have allowed no goals in two matches, while the Canadians were breeched on one occasion against Oz.

"There is no secret to scoring goals," FFC Potsdam player Mittag recently told FIFA.com. "It is a matter of being in the right place at the right time and working hard."

Delicate Da Mbabi a question mark

Okoyino Da Mbabi - though less of an out-and-out goal scorer as she is entrusted with the creative midfield responsibilities as a true number 10 - has had no trouble finding the net. With two against Thailand in the opener and a brilliant long-range volley against Australia, the player of mixed Cameroonian, French and German extraction has been tipped to become one of Germany's finest female players.

Head coach Sylvia Neid though, is not sure her delicate creator will line up against tough-tackling Canada with a spot in the quarters already secured. "The weather is very hot and we have some very tired players," she said. "Perhaps Celia will take a rest against Canada - maybe some others too."

With both sides in the quarters already, pride and a first-place finish will have to provide the motivation. "We wanted to qualify for the quarter-finals," Canada coach Bridge said." Now that we have done that, we want to finish first in the group."

Behind the scenes

Though the scorers grab most of the headlines, Canada's creative central midfielder Veronique Maranda from Montreal is the soft-spoken soul of the Canuck team. With a fair number of her deft passes eventually ending up in the back of the net, the long-time admirer of Zinedine Zidane is crucial to the Canadian cause.

"Personally the best part of the game for me is that final pass," the player said in her charming French-Canadian accent. "I love it when I see those strikers moving and I can slip a pass through to them and beat four or five defenders in the process."

"We're just taking it one game at a time - we only think about the next game. But if we want to be world champions, we're going to have to beat everyone," she added changing gears a bit and showing some of the fabled "Canuck Spirit." "So just bring them on, and we'll do all we can to beat them. We don't fear anyone."

And with foraging goal-queen Timko roving up front with a midfielder's mentality, there are always options for the delicate dictator of play. "She never stops running," she said of her target-woman and team mate of two years. "We have a great understanding and she always gives options."

So Brazil, China and Nigeria advance in that order. Canada will face China in the next round if we don't defeat Germany later.

Third place: Australia is through unless Spain beats or ties the US (unlikely) or Korea beats Russia by 5 goals (doubtful), or if Spain ties or beats the US and Russia loses by no more than one goal). Nigeria is through in any scenario, and will probaly meeet Germany. If Spain or Korea makes it through, then Germany would have to meet them (or Russia if they lose by no more than one goal)and the US would have to meet Nigeria.

Canada meets China, which in my opinion is better for Canada than Brazil (Brazil has more power and overall skill). China is an opportunistic possesion team that may capitalise on Canada's open long ball style, but they lack flash on attack. Canada will have to be physical and outhustle the Chinese, and hope they get a decent ref like Gerard today. Nigeria may have been better, as Canada could physically dominate them, attleast at the opening. Nigeria's strength, besides speed and individual flair, is ability is to withstand the heat and tiredness in the tropical heat, as they showed against Brazil, and Germany will have to get to them early.

Boy, the field today was in bad shape. Canada's next two matches will be on the same field (the good thing about winning is that we don't have to trvel for the quarters), and a messy field against China and then probably Brazil will probably work in our favour.

Probably not. Poor traction is bad for everyone but especially so for a fast, aggressive team like Canada. Nullifies much of their advantage - like trying to drive an Indy car on ice. Much easier to pass the ball around than chase long balls in those conditions.

U.S. women lose to Germany in under-19 soccer

BANGKOK , Thailand (AP) -- The United States lost to Germany 3-1 Wednesday in the semifinals of the FIFA Under-19 Women's World Championship.

Germany will play for the title Saturday against China, which beat Brazil 2-0 in the other semifinal behind goals by Lou Xiaoxu in the 11th and 42nd minutes. The Americans will play Brazil for third place.

Germany's Annike Krahn opened the scoring in the 11th minute, but the Americans tied it five minutes later on an own-goal by the Germans. Melanie Behringer made it 2-1 in the 69th minute and Patricia Hanebeck added a late goal to complete the scoring.

At the 2003 Women's World Cup, Germany eliminated the U.S. team with a 3-0 victory in the semifinals.

Are you saying she's the new Pele? or are you saying you may cause her some harm?

She made a choice as a young woman not to go. Which the last time I checked is allowed in this country. And by not going, someone else got to play at that level. And hopefully that will help the real world cup drive in a little while.

I just hope that she ends up playing in the CWPSLi and inspires many many many many people into the rinks and into becoming huge fans of the women's pro indoor game. I'd love to see her in a Ottawa North Inter-Lady Barvarians kit.
