HARRISONBURG, Va., Sept. 19, 2004 —James Madison and fifth-ranked Penn State battled to a scoreless double-overtime tie in women's soccer Sunday afternoon at the JMU Soccer Complex.
The tie ended a five-game winning streak for the Nittany Lions, whose record stands at 5-1-1. JMU's record is 4-2-1.
Both teams had several good scoring chances, all in regulation play. Penn State senior Stephanie Pezzullo's (Chepachet, R.I./Ponaganset) shot in the 30th minute got past junior goalkeeper Jessica Hussey (Kanata, Ontario/Holy Trinity) but was cleared off the goalline by junior Emily Baskin (Springfield, Va./West Springfield). Less than two minutes later a header by JMU freshman Vanessa Brizzi (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) sailed just over the crossbar.
JMU sophomore Sarah Cebulski (Manotick, Ontario/St./Mark's) faced junior Erin McLeod (Vancouver, B.C./Western Canada) one-on-one in the opening minutes of the second half, but her shot was just wide. In the 68th minute, Dukes' freshman Melanie Schaffer's (Allison Park, Pa./Hampton) free kick just outside the penalty box was saved by a diving McLeod.
McLeod had two saves and Hussey finished with three saves.
