Result of the Monday August 15th, 2003 CPSL game between North York Astros and Hamilton Thunder played at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 8:30pm.

26 min...Astros RED card...Gabriel Salguero picks up his second YELLOW card for dissent as he's running and yapping while play is still going on. He earned his first Yellow just six minutes earlier on a rough tackle.

41 min...Astros RED card...Aldo Tori earns a direct RED card for pulling down HT Stalin Cardenas on right inside of Astros box injuring him. Referee Isaac Raymond awards Thunder a Penalty kick.

43 min...Thunder Kevin Deserpa GOAL...Deserpa stutter steps on Penalty kick and rolls ball into right corner of net as goalie Luciano Miranda steps forward. Astros goalie earns a Yellow card for protesting this goal. It looked like Deserpa stopped then waited for Miranda to move then rolled the ball in.

78 min...Thunder Peter Curic GOAL...Curic gets pass through middle and slides 12 yard shot into right side of net off right post.

85 min...Thunder Kevin Deserpa GOAL...on four-on-one break, Deserpa gets centering pass and volleys ball in from 10 yards.

87 min...Thunder Peter Curic GOAL...Curic heads in ball from 10 yards.

Final Score:..............North York Astros.............0................Hamilton Thunder................4...............

Attendance was about 100 mostly pro-Thunder fans on this warm evening.

Roberto Ferrari earned the shutout for the Thunder although he was substituted in the last four minutes for back-up Dan Pelc. It wasn't an easy game for them even with a two man advantage because Ferrari was caught off his line and was lucky that the shot just curved wide of the post and an Astros 40 yard freekick by Francisco Dos Santos looked like it hit some kind of bump in the field and deflected up that the goalie just pushed over the net at the last second.

The Thunder should have put this game out of reach much earlier than they did. They should retake second place after tonight's game in the weak Western Conference but the division looks like the CFL football East with the Alouettes (Brampton Hitmen) well ahead of the sub .500 teams (Argos/Renegades/Ti-Cats). The Astros have a hard time scoring at full strength so playing two men down for more than half the game wasn't going to help their cause. Astros goalie Luciano Miranda performance and the Thunder's poor finishing until the last 15 minutes kept the game close. Kevin Deserpa had the most chances in the game and had two goals but Peter Curic only came on at the 66 minute mark and had the other two goals.

Astros have a very nice full colour glossy program given out at the game. Complete schedule of the Astros and their reserve team, team photo, and head-shots of each player and bio. Of course, late in the season much of the info is obsolete.

Ding, Ding! Tonight makes 25 CPSL games I've watched so far this year. The only team I haven't seen yet is London City.

Ouch. Playing a half with 9 men. Ugly. Never had to do that myself. Left my side playing with 9 men once,,,,. Lads weren't pleased. Nope. Not pleased at all.

Geezus, that's a lot of football! Was thinking it would be yelling and screaming around the condo if i tried to pull that off over the summer. Curious, what's the ticket prices like? On average?

It's never too late to make a tackle.

A great leason never too young to learn. There I was. But 16 and my briefest of career in Her Majesty's Navy being finished by an "Involuntary Discharge" I was lucky enough to find myself mentored by the legandary, Gaffer Hardstones MacDuff with my first professional club, the cockney side of Potatoerot & Cowscud United.

It was my first derby against their fiercest rival, King's Diaper who due to their having only a 60% unemployment rate were allways able to bring along good support. A real snobbish sort. Living upwind of the smelter, matching shoes, TREES!

So you can imagine how I felt having just been beaten for a breakaway by their star forward resulting in the match's 1st goal in the 108th minute. Trotting back towards my goalkeeper, head down and nealy in tears. When over the roar of the travelling supports I could hear Gaffer MacDuff's voice coming to me.

"Oh for the luv of,,. WELL DON'T JUST STAND THERE!!! KICK SOMEBODY LADDIE!!!"

And that next morning as Gaffer MacDuff was paying out my promissaries at the Constabulary Offices I began to understand that genius. Even today, I can still hear his words as clearly as I did that first morning through all the bandages.

"Remember, sohn. Yer not spiking 'em for SCORING a goal. Yer spiking so as e'll not-score-enuther. Kapeesh ;)?"

Hey Robin or anyone who watches Thunder, could you comment on how K. de Serpa is playing this year? If you have had a chance to talk to him what does he say about his unfortunate stint at Avilés in Spain this winter? Is he keen to give Europe another go?

And you may have been "given" one but I had to pay something like $2.50 for it.

On average?According to the CPSL site, regular adult tickets range from $5 to $10, except (ironically) for Ottawa who charge only $3. North York charges $8, but you can get a season pass for two adults and three children for only $20 --- yeah, it doesn't make sense to me, either. Robin doesn't have to worry about any of this because he has a media pass, I believe.

Other game from Monday, August 25:

Toronto Supra 5 St. Catharines 0

From the CPSL site:

From bottom to the top is what a hammering of St. Catharines Roma Wolves means to Toronto Supra when at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke Monday night the west-end Toronto team coasted to 5-0 score by half-time to take over top spot in the Eastern Conference standings.

Martin Peraza (24 and 30 minutes) and Mike Di Luca (44 and 45 minutes) each scored twice for Supra, while Samuel Afriyie struck the fifth at the 39th minute mark. It’s been an impressive turnaround for Toronto Supra following the team’s surprising last place finish at the end of 2002 season, but the promise of owner Isac Cambas that things would change dramatically this year, has been kept.

“Our fans deserve better and I’m going to see that they have a team to be proud of,” said Cambas following a disappointing 2002.

Supra now have 27 points and top position in the east with an 8-0-3 WLT record, a point above Ottawa Wizards.

St. Catharines are at 5-5-1 for 16 points and third position in the west.

How much are Toronto Supra tickets? The CPSL website says $7, but I don't know if that price is from last year.

Hopefully I will be going to the Ottawa at Toronto Supra game next weekend. :)

I don't know for sure. But I can tell you that the CPSL site has been updated with new ticket prices from last year (North York used to be $5), so I would assume that $7 is accurate.

I just realized that the CPSL has rescheduled the postponed games. That should be a great match!

St. Catharines 3 London 2

From the CPSL site:

It didn’t take long for St. Catharines Wolves to make amends for a heavy 5-0 loss to Toronto Supra just 48 hours earlier when on Wednesday night the Garden City team came out on top of a hard fought contest to defeat London City, 3-2.

The teams fought to a scoreless tie in the first half and it wasn’t until the 73rd minute that Mark Mulholland put St. Catharines one-up and that score held until five minutes from the final whistle when Attila Salamon tied the game for London City.

The game was looking very much like a 1-1 tie, but three more goals were scored—two by the home side and one by London City for the 3-2 final score.

Carlo Arghitto made it 2-1 for St. Catharines at 86 minutes, Frank Del Priore made it 3-1 for Wolves at 88 minutes and Gentian Buzali struck for London City in added time.

The win moves St. Catharines into second place in the Western Conference with a 6-5-1 WLT record and 19 points, while London City are at 3-7-2 and 11 points.
