Well not a good start for action this week. London is the only CPSL team I haven't see this year. Maybe Wednesday against Toronto Supra I'll catch them.

I would imagine that the season will have to be extended because of all the games that have been cancelled over the past few weeks.

I'm not surprised this game is cancelled. I was thinking of going to it but didn't want to make definite plans because I thought blackouts or fears of them would lead to a cancellation. Robin, thanks for the heads-up.

Sigma, yeah, I said the same thing in the Week 13 thread. By my count this is the 12th game that needs to be made up.

The Ottawa Wizards will be playing an exhibition game on Saturday vs Ottawa club all-stars (premier division I believe).... should be a good game.

Oh yeah, the game takes place at Terry Fox.

On Friday, Toronto Croatia vs. Durham is OFF, but London vs. Mississauga is ON.

The two scheduled weekend games are both in the GTA, but they will kick off in the afternoon, so power for lights won't be an issue and the games will go ahead.

The CPSL claims that there have been 12 games postponed. However, this counts only those postponed in the last week. There were 2 others postponed before that.

From the CPSL site:

TORONTO—Friday-August 22--One game is on in the Canadian Professional Soccer League tonight and the other one is off.

The London City vs. Mississauga Olympians game scheduled for Cove Road in London will be played, but the Toronto Croatia vs. Durham Flames clash due to take place under floodlights at Memorial Park in Mississauga, has been postponed while that city continues to encourage power conservation

Two games scheduled over the weekend, Vaughan Sun Devils vs. Laval Dynamites at Dufferin Clark on Saturday at 2 and the Brampton Hitmen home game also against Les Dynamites, a 4 pm kickoff at Victoria Park, will both be played.

This brings to 12 the number of CPSL games postponed and the list continues to be available here.

The game between Hamilton Thunder and St. Catharines Roma Wolves was the first to be hit and was called off at Brian Timmis Stadium on Thursday,August 14, two hours after the power disruption occured.

This was followed by the postponement of the next night’s London City vs. Toronto Croatia game at Cove Road in London.

Both games scheduled for Saturday, August 16 were then postponed. They were the Vaughan Sun Devils vs. Ottawa Wizards game set for Dufferin Clark at 2 pm and the Durham Flames vs. Laval Dynamites encounter scheduled for the Civic Stadium in Oshawa at 7 pm.

All four games scheduled for Sunday, August 17 were then called off —the Toronto Supra vs. Ottawa Wizards Eastern Conference showdown arranged for Victoria Park in Brampton at 2 pm was scrubbed, and the St. Catharines Wolves vs. Laval Dynamites set for Club Roma in St. Catharines, also a 2 o’clock kickoff.

The two evening games, Metro Lions vs.Hamilton Thunder listed for 6 p.m. at Birchmount Stadium and Brampton Hitmen vs. Mississauga Olympians, newly scheduled for an 8 pm kickoff at Victoria Park in Brampton, also off.

League Administrator Stan Adamson cited a number of reasons for so many postponements, including the inability of a hotel to guarantee accommodation of visiting team Ottawa Wizards despite their long-standing reservations.

“There is concern too that floodlights may cut out during periods of conserving power and the reluctance of municipalities to allow afternoon events to go on during a period of recovery,” he explained.

“They, understandably, don’t want to open buildings with dressing rooms for the next 24 to 48 hours,” he said.

Amateur soccer has been hard hit also, with many games in the Ontario Soccer League and other leagues called off.

The following summarizes all games in the Canadian Professional Soccer League postponed as a result of the power disruption:

Thursday, August 14: Hamilton Thunder vs. St. Catharines Roma Wolves

Friday, August 15: London City vs. Toronto Croatia

Saturday, August 16: Vaughan Sun Devils vs. Ottawa Wizards

Saturday, August 16: Durham Flames vs. Laval Dynamites

Sunday, August 17: Metro Lions vs. Hamilton Thunder

Sunday, August 17: Toronto Supra vs. Ottawa Wizards

Sunday, August 17: St. Catharines Wolves vs. Laval Dynamites

Sunday, August 17: Brampton Hitmen vs. Mississauga Olympians

Monday, August 18: North York Astros vs. London City

Wednesday, August 20: Toronto Supra vs. London City

Wednesday, August 20: Toronto Croatia vs. Metro Lions

Friday, August 22: Toronto Croatia vs. Durham Flames

Result of the Saturday August 23, 2003 CPSL game between Vaughan Sun Devils and Laval Dynamites played at Dufferin District in Vaughan at 2:00pm.

28 min...Dynamites Kyt Selaidopoulos GOAL...Selaidopoulos beats offside trap and rushes in from 35 yards rolling ball past goalie Rob Tilley from 20 yards into open net. VSD Danny Sanna was given a YELLOW card for complaining about no offside flag being raised.

40 min...VSD Eke Chibueze GOAL...VSD Willie Giummarra blasts 25 yard shot that deflects off defender to find VSD Fitzroy Powell on left, Powell rolls ball across goalmouth for charging Chibueze to blast 5 yarder just under bar leaving fallen goalie Nicholas Pinto no chance.

79 min...Dynamites Vladimir Edouard GOAL...LD Nasson Theosmy runs on left and LD Kyt Selaidopoulos gets his rolled cross for 18 yard shot blocked by sprawling goalie deflecting ball right for Edouard to slot in 8 yard shot.

Final Score:.........Vaughan Sun Devils..............1.....................Laval Dynamites.................2.............

Attendance was about 100 on this warm afternoon with a strong breeze from the North that affected balls in the second half.

Sun Devils had more chances but more of their shots were blocked or off target then Dynamites.

Former Sun Devils coach Dave Benning was in the stands. He is no longer coaching the team but still is in charge of the youth teams in the Glen Shields system. On the game sheets, Vaughan's owner Tony Dethomasis is listed as the coach but since he was actually on the other side of the field handling administration it was trainer/coach Sam Medeiros who was making the onfield decisions. Brampton Hitmen's coach Steve Nijjar was also in the crowd making notes for tomorrow afternoon's game between his team and Laval.

Referee Justin Tasev issued a YELLOW card to Sun Devils substitute goalie Rob Scala for swearing at him from the bench when a teammate was injured. Sun Devils defender Bayette Smith or Tony Marshall had zinged the referee good when an ice cream truck pulled into the parking lot playing the cheesiest version of Frank Mill's "Music Box Dancer" I'd ever heard. "Hey Ref; your cell phone's ringing!". Who knew what the Dynamites were cursing if they kept their comments in French?

This was the first game in the Toronto area in more than a week. The GTA governments have been ordering no stadium lights to be turned on as the city recovers from it's blackout but this weekend Laval plays two afternoon games. Monday night is a evening game in North York so we'll see if the crisis is really over. With about eleven games delayed in the last week along with about six others from earlier in the year, the season would probably have to be extended two weeks minimum.

Fourth official Isaac Raymond informed me that Denise Robinson and Sonia Dellancourt will be officials at the Women's World Cup in the United States next month. This is the second time that FIFA will use women for all refereeing and line positions.

No, there were only 14 players from the Premier division. Kanata soccer plays in the third division (competitive 2).

Result of the Sunday August 24th, 2003 CPSL game between Brampton Hitmen and Laval Dynamites played at Victoria Park in Brampton at 4:00pm.

46 mins (injury time in 1st half)...Dynamites RED card...Vincenzo Dibiasi gets in sliding tackle near sideline on BH Hugo Herrara. When Dibiasi got up he stepped on Herrara right in front of the assistant referee Calin Pintea. Herrara was injured on play and did not come back for the second half.

65 min...Hitmen Phil Ionadi GOAL...A Hitmen player bounces cross from left and Ionadi blasts mid-air 20 yard shot off underside of bar near right corner of net.

68 min...Hitmen Jonathan Bustamante steps around one defender and crashes into another just inside LD box on right. Bustamante is injured on play and referee Frank Marciello calls a Penalty kick.

71 min...Hitmen Phil Ionadi GOAL...After long set up, Ionadi puts his Penalty kick into right side of net beyond diving goalie Nicolas Pinto.

72 min...Hitmen Alex Morrison GOAL...A Hitmen player's freekick from 40 yards on right sideline has LD defender blocks on edge of box, Morrison gets rebound ball and scoops 18 yard shot into right side of net with goalie caught five yards out.

80 min...Dynamites RED card...Soriano Ramirez Santos earns his second YELLOW card for his football block on Hitmen Robert Fran running over center line.

94 min (injury time)...Hitmen Jonathan Bustamante GOAL...Bustamante is fed through ball on left and runs in and slides 15 yard shot beyond goalie to right side of net.

Final Score:.....................Brampton Hitmen.................4.................Laval Dynamites......................0.................

Attendance was about 150 on this warm late afternoon with the threat of rain that never burst out except for a short patch in the second half. The power of the microphone was supplied by me as I loaned the PA operator one of my penlight batteries.

This was a very rough game with plenty of injuries that finished the day for a few players. Dynamites Arturo-Cisneros Salas had some of his teeth knocked out in the first half. Hugo Herrara didn't return for the second half after a sliding tackle on the sideline. Dynamites Nicholas Rotiroti was injured at 84 minutes running back to make a sliding tackle and was near the gate to the dressing rooms so he was helped off the field. Salas's injury was unfairly uncarded and really set the tone for rough stuff the rest of the game. Dynamites couldn't get a break. Even Vladimir Edouard's header into the net from 2 yards at 91 minutes was called back as offside.

Hitmen's goalie Roy Blanche earned the shutout without making many saves until the game was no longer in doubt. Robert Fran has joined the Hitmen 'on-loan' for the rest of the season from Toronto Croatia. He comes from the last-place to the first-place team in the Western Conference. The Hitmen remain undefeated at home this season. Veteran defender Milodrag Akmadazic was a late 2nd half substitute for the Hitmen returning from an injury that kept him out for weeks.
