OTTAWA WIZARDS OUT OF OPEN CANADA CUP
CPSL boardroom decision eliminates defending champion

VAUGHAN—Thursday, August 21—Last year’s CPSL champion Ottawa Wizards have been removed from the final round of the Open Canada Cup following a decision handed down by the league’s board of governors.
The league has been plagued for several weeks now by the Wizards’ expressed dissatisfaction of the CPSL’s handling of the competition, the pairing of the teams and the locations being considered for the final games. These games were eventually awarded to London and scheduled for the upcoming Labour Day holiday weekend, August 29 to Monday, September 1.
The Wizards also threatened to boycott the finals and to seek a court injunction to prevent the games being played.
Due to the uncertainty of the Ottawa team’s intentions while facing a busy promotional campaign, the league asked Ottawa to confirm its place in the finals by 3 pm today.
Ottawa failed to meet the deadline and the team was removed from the schedule.
The Open Canada Cup—open to all 13 teams in the Canadian Professional Soccer League and the strongest senior amateurs who wish to take part, started with a total 22 teams back on May 16.
This was reduced to six for the final weekend—and is now down to five. The winner will receive a cheque for $10,000.
The Open Canada Cup is played independent of the regular season league schedule and playoffs.
Vincent Ursini, contacted on business at Saint Kitts and Nevis in the Caribbean, explained his frustration of Ottawa not being more accepting of the way the competition is designed.
“We structure this competition with all participating teams in mind and while we listened carefully to all suggested improvements from Ottawa Wizards, and made some concessions, there comes a time when we must move on.” he said.

The final round of games to be played at the Cove Road home ground of London City, now looks like this:
Friday, August 29, 8.30 p.m. Wild Card Game: London City vs. Durham Flames
Sunday, August 31, 5.30 p.m. Semi-final: St. Catharines Wolves vs. Metro Lions
Sunday, August 31, 8.30 p.m. Semi-final: Kanata vs. London City or Durham Flames
Monday, September 1, 3.45 p.m. OPEN CANADA CUP FINAL

Maybe Wizards will have the last laugh if Kanata wins the tourney. It's possible because the four CPSL teams aren't the best in their league.

I guess we won't get to see Hubert Busby Jr coaching both benches in a Wizards vs Kanata final.

Looks like the favourite is now Kanata. Wow, not bad for a new team - semis of the open cup and semis of the ontario cup.

Omur says that he informed the CPSL the Wizards were playing, but the CPSL says this never happened. Hmmmmm......

"Ottawa Wizards owner Omur Sezerman plans to sue the Canadian Professional Soccer League and seek an injunction to prevent the league from staging the final round of its Open Canada Cup after the defending champions were disqualified yesterday.

The league, worried about concerns the team had over the tournament format and location, had asked the top-ranked Wizards to confirm their Cup participation by yesterday afternoon.

When the league didn't hear back by the deadline, league administrator Stan Adamson scratched the Wizards from the tournament, which includes the Kanata Soccer Post men's senior team.

Sezerman said he had informed the league earlier the Wizards would be playing, but Adamson disagreed."

I have to agree. Good luck to Kanata.

A poke in the eye with a sharp stick might be just what the CPSL needs for incentive to get its act together.

I wonder if Ottawa would think about joining the PSL (USL Division 3)? They probably would have the same travel as the Ottawa Fury (W-League).... for the most part.

New Hampshire Phantoms
Westchester Flames
New Jersey Stallions
New York Freedoms
Western Mass Pioneers

Kinda silly for the CPSL to alienate their best product.

Kinda of silly for Ottawa to think that they deserve special treatment.

I don't know if you guys here are visiting the old board or not, so let me bring the following post to your attention:

Special treatment? No... fair treatment... yes.

London should not have received rights to host both cups. Another team should get a chance to host one of the cups (Ottawa, Durham, Metro Lions... etc).

The CPSL has just as much fault as Ottawa.

Sigma, I agree with you. I think that London should not host both tournaments and that Ottawa should host one. The last statement you made is one of the fairest I've seen on this issue --- noting that it implies that Ottawa is not completely innocent.

My "special treatment" comment and link to that anonymous post on the old board was me playing the devil's advocate. There are so many anti-CPSL comments but hardly any anti-Ottawa comments from regular Voyageurs, so I was trying to point out that there are two sides to the story... well, three sides, really... the third, of course, being the truth.

Unfortunately my attempt to make this point by mimicking Mimglow's comment came across as being unfair (but no more unfair than others are being, in my opinion). At the same time, I do think I have a valid point regarding "special treatment". For one thing, there have been comments regarding the Wizards deserving byes (even though they have already been given one by playing only one round in the CPSL Cup so far). For another, Mimglow's comment implies that the Wizards should be treated differently because they are the CPSL's "best product", and some comments from the Wizards have come across this way as well.

I guess I didn't put out the point I wanted to make. I wouldn't want the league to give preferential treatment to any club, just equal treatment. And like I said, I just thought it was odd for the league to go out of its way to alienate ANY club, especially the one that is best-run.
