75 min...Riverhounds RED card for coach Ricardo Iribarren for constant harrassment of officials on his sideline.

Final Score:........Toronto Lynx...........0................Pittsburgh Riverhounds.........3......

Attendance was announced as 3023 on this hot breezy evening. That seemed like an exageration but it was a big crowd for an also ran team that can't score at home. Lynx did have six subs for this game so they had more player choices.

Usual Lynx captain Theo Zagar was not the starting goalie tonight. Brian Rowland was shaky but could not be blamed on any goal and helped keep the score down. The Lynx chose David DiPlacido as the captain tonight as Brian Ashton was not a starter neither. Lynx starting forwards Ryan Lucas and Sebastian Barclay were ineffective. Next season, the club might as well give their jobs to some mediocre Canadians for a year until they get snapped up by some lower division Scandanavian team. Josue Mayard was moved up to midfield and looked pretty good on wing. Newcomer Jonathan Westmaas got the start in midfield and played well in the one half he got to play.

Riverhounds goalie Randy Dedini earned the shutout without having to make anything but routine saves.

The Manchester United fan club was had a table near the entrance recruiting members and giving away a few prizes in a lucky draw. Tonight was Multicultural Night with talent supplied by CHIN radio. Miss CHIN Bikini and her male equivalent took the opening kickoff to the Lynxster. The Coro Italia L'Aquila provided singing in Italian known by me as "Hey that's the one on the Pizza commercial and that one was in the Bugs Bunny cartoon". It's still hard to get used to not seeing Johnny Lombardi after so many years.

The Riverhounds have now one 9 of their last 10 games as they continue to chase Rochester Raging Rhinos for the last playoff spot in the division. They had a crew of four for their radio broadcast. We don't need them promoting our city. They announced that the other wing of the hotel they were staying at turned their air conditioning off to conserve energy because Toronto still has not recovered from the blackout and the subway is still not running. (Actually all of this is true plus we had it phoned in that the CNE wouldn't open until Tuesday so the Lynx won't be in their booth tomorrow!) Still, I want Rochester to win the spot. There isn't a Toronto media contingient, it's all fringe media like me. The mainstream media don't even run the stories when they're handfed the press releases.

Lucas and Barclay are a complete bitter disappointment. You sort of hope that certain players don't excel too much as they might get cast off to Europe or Montreal/Rochester like in the past.

PS - are you really surprised that the T.O. media does not cover any Lynx games. Just look at the crummy venue and team they would have to attend to.

CFTO covers every Toronto Maple Leafs (Intercounty Baseball) game from Christie Pits on their sportsnews. They try to keep tight camera angles but they made a mistake and panned out and I saw total attendance of about 75 for this playoff game against Brantford. 2000 should beat 75 I say.

Intercounty Baseball?

Ugh, at least we watch the world's most popular sport. :)

But 2000 for anything that even pretends to be pro is embarassing - except maybe full-contact synchronized swimming.

But a good point by Robin nonetheless. Why do the baseball Leafs get better coverage than the Lynx, even though their crowds are smaller? Well, we know why, some things never change I'm afraid.

That said, I'm glad last night's match got no media coverage in Toronto. The fewer people who saw last night's display, the better.

Blicharski didn't start because he missed the match in Pittsburgh due to school obligations. Hence, Peter didn't feel it was right to start him ahead of someone who made the trip and was 100% commited.

Given the (lack of) effort that several Lynx players gave on the night (including Mr. Mucus) I'd say there were a lot of players who started instead of Blicharski who weren't 100% committed.

Re. the Leafs, like it or not, in the eyes of many they are an institution having existed for over one hundred years but that is a red herring.

The Intercounty League Maple Leafs are not the same Maple Leafs that particpated in the minor pro leagues since the late 1800's. The name was resurrected when Jack Dominico purchased it after the old pro team had folded.

Credit it to Dominico for somehow keeping this team going despite public apathy.

There must be something about this guy that attracts attention and support. There does seem to be almost a cult of personality about this guy.

I'd sure like to know more about the economics of the IBL.

The baseball Maple Leafs made the CFTO sportscast again tonight (11:50pm) camera crew there to report that the stadium lights at Christie Pits failed to come on !!! Game will have to be replayed Wednesday (likely).

Sometimes the CPSL does the right thing although the baseball team is never portrayed as bush league. I've heard the City is enforcing a 'no stadium light' policy since the weekend. Didn't the baseball team know this or did they expect special priviledges? "In 1890 we played by candlelight, every spectator brought their own".
