Result of the Tuesday August 12th, 2003 CPSL game between Toronto Supra and Metro Lions played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 8:30pm.
19 min...Supra Martin Peraza GOAL...Supra Pedro Diaz 40 yard freekick hits Lions goalie Courtenay Campbell in chest but he doesn't squeeze it with his hands. Supra forward Michael Deluca heads ball aside from 5 yards knocking ball down. Peraza boots in ball on right from 3 yards into top of net.
23 min...Supra Michael Deluca GOAL...Supra Jaroslav Radzinski crosses from 15 yards on left into box for Supra Daniel Amaral to blast 12 yard shot that goalie makes point-blank save. The rebound finds Supra Samuel Afriyie who passes off from 5 yards as he's blocked by defender from shot on goal. Deluca blasts 5 yard shot into net.
39 min...Supra Martin Peraza GOAL...Peraza cuts over from rush down right wing and running towards goal beats goalie on short side from 7 yards.
62 min...Supra Leonardo Savone knocks down cross into Supra box and deflects it from his foot to his hand. Referee Manuel Orellana signals for a Penalty kick. Savone probably should have let the ball bounce right through the box because it was already on its way out of the box on left side.
63 min...Lions Darryl Gomes GOAL...Gomes penalty kick is blasted to left corner of net as Supra goalie Michael Silva slumps to his right.
67 min...Lions Hayden Fitzwilliams GOAL...Lions Craig Patton rolls ball from left to center where Fitzwilliams blasts 12 yarder into net.
Final Score:.....Toronto Supra.............3.............Metro Lions................2............
Attendance was about 100 people on this hot humid night.
Supra substituted Peraza at halftime after his two goals and making some great runs, passes and shots from the right wing gave the Supra a 'safe' lead. Lions brought in Darryl Gomes at the 52 minute mark and he was immediately injured within the next three. Besides scoring the first goal, he hit two goalposts within six minutes of the Lions second goal as the momentum of the game shifted. The Lions were late coming back from the dressing room for the second half but new coach Goran Miscevic must have inspired them because they looked like a different team. Lions still had a problem in both halfs with having four defenders standing at the center line when they had possession deep in the Supra end.
The time clock at Centennial was programmed to only count up to 60 minutes then start again. Then it would start up again and count to 10 again and again. The referee signalled to the pressbox to stop the clock because it was confusing the fans. I could only freeze it.
I was glad I could see this game. The same teams played here July 31st but I was recovering from the SARSstock Concert the night before. With the Eastern Conference only having six teams, a team actually plays ONE of its division rivals three times. That game had ended 2-0.
Supra's sponsers on their black uniforms (only the second time I've seen them wear that colour) is "Mamma Mia" which although initially looking like it's from the ABBA musical/play is actually the name of an all-you-can-eat Buffet.
Spotted in tonight's crowd were Hamilton Thunder owner Italo Ferrari. A-League Toronto Lynx coach Peter Pinizzotto was also there. For this weekend's home and home against Pittsburgh Riverhounds he may have all of three substitutes on the bench. With the A-League roster freeze deadline on August 4th although he has 20 players on his roster, many are injured or suspended. With Riverhounds still in a good position to catch Rochester for the playoffs, look for Pittsburgh to be especially inspired to try for two wins.
