Canaries Land Jim

16:00 - 30 June 2003

Nottingham Forest defender Jim Brennan is to sign a three-year contract with Norwich City within the next few days.

The Canadian was travelling to Carrow Road today to discuss personal terms after rejecting Nottingham Forest's offer of a new deal. "It has been a very, very tough decision," said Brennan's agent Mark Curtis.

"He has enjoyed his time at Nottingham Forest, in particular the last two years.

"He has a lot of respect for Paul Hart and the rest of the Forest staff, the directors and the fans."

Brennan has returned to England to tie up the move to East Anglia before linking up with the Canadian squad to take part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup which starts on July 12 in America.

Curtis said Brennan felt it was the right time to move on after joining the Reds in 1999 from Bristol City.

"It's just the right move for him at this moment in time," he said.

"Forest tried very hard to keep him. He enjoyed very much playing for Paul Hart.

"I can't talk about the contract he was offered by Forest. That is confidential and it isn't something that I could, or would, talk about.

"We have let Nottingham Forest know and Norwich are going to announce it in the next couple of days.

"He has gone down today for personal talks but they are pretty much agreed.

"There's certainly no bad feeling with Forest. He got on well with the players and staff.

"He would like to thank Hart for all he has done."

Brennan, who made 47 appearances for the Reds last season in the league, cups and play-offs, will make a quick return to the City Ground as Forest's First Division match against Nigel Worthington's team will be televised live on Sky on Saturday, August 30 at 5.35pm.

The 26-year-old is the second of the four out-of-contract players to reject new terms after Riccardo Scimeca's decision to join Premiership Leicester.

Des Walker has agreed a one-year deal and Matthieu Louis-Jean, as revealed in the Evening Post last week, has indicated he is willing to sign a two-year contract.

In addition, Jack Lester and Jon Olav Hjelde were not offered new contracts at the end of the season.

BRENNAN SET FOR MIDFIELD SWITCH

12:00 - 02 July 2003

Norwich City manager Nigel Worthington revealed that new recruit Jim Brennan will be employed on the left of midfield when the First Division campaign gets under way.

The 26-year-old, who was out of contract at the City Ground, completed his free transfer move from Nottingham Forest to the Canaries yesterday after passing his medical and signing a three-year contract. Brennan's arrival means the club's top scorer last season, Paul McVeigh, will be pushed further forward and Adam Drury will occupy the left-back slot in front of Brennan, who will take up the role he usually plays for Canada.

Brennan impressed Worthington in Forest's easy 4-0 win over Norwich at the City Ground in March when he completed the scoring with his first and only goal for the club.

"Myself and Doug Livermore (assistant manager) have tracked him for quite a few games and he's very quick and, while he can play at left-back, he's better going forward and will add something to our team," Worthington said.

"He's a big loss for Forest, but a big gain for us.

"Brennan was always one of the players on our list and I'm delighted to get such a player to come here and fit into the scheme of things at Norwich.

"I've been delighted with his attitude and how much he wanted to come to Norwich with what we're trying to do here, how we go out to play the game and all the facilities we've got here. He's been very, very impressed."

Brennan, who rejected Forest's offer of a new deal, added: "Forest made me an offer but I spoke to Nigel and he made it sound so good as he talked about his ambition to take the club into the Premiership.

"I had a great four years at Forest but this is a great opportunity for me to achieve my ambition, which is the same as the manager's.

"I'm really looking forward to playing for Norwich and getting a partnership going with Adam Drury on the left side."

I am glad to see Brennan is going to play midfield regularly.

The opinions expressed above are just that.
