CPSL North York Astros vs Metro Lions

Result of the CPSL game between North York Astros and Metro Lions played Monday June 16, 2003 at Esther Shiner Stadium in North York at 8:30pm.

28 min...Astros Peter Zorbas GOAL...Astros player cross from left, Zorbas 12 yard shot from right is beyond reaching goalie Courtney Campbell into top left corner of net.

33 min...Lions Kareem Reynolds GOAL...Reynolds 5 yard shot in traffic is into middle of net after receiving short pass in box.

44 min...Astros Kurt Ramsey GOAL...Astros freekick from 35 yards on right is knocked down by Astros player and Marshall shoots 5 yarder into net stepping through crowd of players.

79 min...Lions Maxim Dorneval GOAL...Lions Caswain Mason crosses from left from 35 yards on rush and Dorneval connects on 10 yard shot on right into net beyond goalie Luciano Miranda.

Final Score:...North York Astros....2....Metro Lions....2...

Attendance varied throughout the game maxing out at somewhere between 75 and 100 at halftime and then finishing at half that by the end of the game in the rapidly falling temperature.

Astros late season hero of 2002 Guillermo Compton Hall came into the game at 61 minutes for his first action this season. He's still recovering from an injury. He looked good but his timing was a bit off.

Lions dominated the first 15 minutes of the game but later there were stretches of Astros putting in the greater pressure.

Mississauga Olympians manager David Gee was at the game. I asked him that playing all the games on the road means he takes in no gate revenue but then there's no stadium rent to pay. Gee said he's further ahead financially in this arrangement.

Thanks again for the report Robin.

Good result for North York. Too bad they lost they lead so late in the game.

She did a good job (way better than that pathetic tape they usually have). She brought about a dozen friends and family members --- but they all left about 15 minutes into the game! There were also about 10 very vocal Metro fans. At the end as Metro came back and looked for a winner it felt like an away game. It is always the case that the visiting team has a few very vocal fans while the North York fans do nothing or just clap at goals and maybe nice plays (yes, I'm guilty, I'm that way as well, but why can't we have even one big mouth on our side?).

quote:Astros late season hero of 2002 Guillermo Compton Hall came into the game at 61 minutes for his first action this season. He's still recovering from an injury. He looked good but his timing was a bit off.Hooray for Compton Hall! I was starting to get worried. I guess he did alright, but why was he the third star of the game??? I'd have chosen Flores ahead of him, but no striker really deserved it.

quote:Lions dominated the first 15 minutes of the game but later there were stretches of Astros putting in the greater pressure.I thought there were two periods where Metro was completely dominant (North York never came close to that intensity): for about 10 minutes following North York's first goal, and for the last 10 minutes of the game. During these periods Metro couldn't do anything wrong, nice passing, nice moves, North York couldn't get past midfield since everyone was back in defence except for the two strikers. However, North York's back line held up well and so there were only two goals given up. For the rest of the game it was pretty even, but North York really couldn't do much near Metro's goal. I think the problem was that they relied on the strikers to develop the play but then there wasn't anyone else in position to have a go at the net. Perhaps if Compton Hall plays with Flores and Russo (these guys have looked alright, I don't think either of them should have been subbed out) then there will be some interesting options.

Anyway, the result was fair. And North York may not be as good as they were at the end of last season (I would have liked to see that team start a new season), but I don't think they'll be pushovers like they have been in the past.

Before the CPSL game was North York Astros Reserves vs. Rexdale Fury. I caught only the last 20-30 minutes and North York scored 3 goals to Rexdale's none (the quality gap was quite clear, the Rexdale keeper missed a ball lobbed from midfield even though he was on his line). No one seemed to know what happened before that, but I later found out that the full score was 7-1.

Did you CPSL fans get the CPSL Official Schedule? It's 6" by 4" and folds out into four panels. It has the complete league schedule and an explanation of the various trophies (for some reason they use the term "CPSL Cup" for the Playoff Cup, arghh). It's nice, look for it at the next game if you don't have one already.

St. Catharines 2 Brampton 0

From the CPSL site:

St. Catharines Roma Wolves forward Carlo Arghittu is one of the most consistent goalscorers in the Canadian Professional Soccer League and he maintained that reputation by scoring both goals in a 2-0 shutout of Brampton Hitmen in the only game played on Wednesday night.

Both defences gave little away at Club Roma in St. Catharines, an encounter that could easily have gone in Brampton’s favour even after Arghittu put St. Catharines ahead at the 25th minute mark. The teams fought through the remainder of the first half and the entire second half before Arghittu found the net again in injury time and just before the final whistle.

Carlo Arghittu scored for his side in the CPSL season opener on May 24, a 2-1 St. Catharines win at Durham Flames, and he repeated the effort in a 4-2 losing cause to Ottawa Wizards on June 8. He scored 13 goals in 2002, fourth in the scoring table.

St. Catharines move to the top of the Western Conference on a 2-1-0 WLT record for six points, while the Hitmen are in sixth position with a single point from a 0-1-1 record.

Results from the CPSL game played between St.Catherines Roma Wolves and Brampton Hitmen at Club Roma Park on 18-June-03 (20:20 start)

17 min...RCard...SC Lucio Ianiero (2nd YCard)
25 min...GOAL...SC Carlo Arghittu
90+min...GOAL...SC Carlo Arghittu

Final Score: St.Catherines Roma Wolves 2 Brampton Hitmen 0

Highlights:
The game started under ideal conditions, with a fairly packed house and was interesting right from the start. SC was handed a yellow card in the 1st minute and the rest of the game held to this form. SC player/coach Ianiero received his second yellow and was quickly dismissed. BH continued to press forward and attacked the short handed Roma squad. Against the grain, SC Carlo Arghittu received along pass on the edge of the box, made a couple of quick moves and slotted the ball into the net. The rest of the game can be quickly sumarized by saying it was chippy, vocal, agressive and dominated by the Hitmen's ball control. With time winding down and the Hitmen throwing everybody forward, SC Carlo Arghittu received a pass at half and raced in on goal alone and slotted the ball past the BH keeper.

Players to watch: SC Carlo Arghittu, SC Tony Carbonara, BH #5, BH #12 (sorry didn't write the names down)

Players to avoid: referee (lost control very early)

Commentary:
First time out at Roma park this year and the same old gang was there! The match was an extremely chippy affair and it seemed like the ref lost control in the first few moments. The crowd was energized and ready to battle the ref with every call made, even though many of the calls were fair. As the game moved along, it developed into a typical Roma game. Long passes to Carlo Arghittu and let the play develop through him. Both of his goals came against the run of play and were both very classy goals. However, the game was dominated by very rough tackling and an inconsistent ref. Brampton had the majority of possesion after Lucio was red carded but could not create any real scoring threats. Hats off to the Hitmen wingers for their runs down either side; if only their crosses could've been finished this game might've turned out diferently.

Also, the crowd was very vocal for this game (too bad it wasn't like this at Hamilton home games). However, you've often got to wonder what game the old Italians are watching. They were on the ref from the start and wouldn't let up, even when the ref got the call right. Oh well, guess that's what home field advantage is all about.

Cheers,
Lazyboy.

!@#@$@#$!&^&*%@%!@#$ CPSL!!!

I booked a hotel for Saturday night because Ottawa was supposed to play in Laval and now I find out that the game has been moved to Ottawa because of 'field problems.' I was then going to go to the Impact-Rochester game the next day, and now I don't know if I will still go to Montreal...

I heard that Durham didn't want to play at Vanier Stadium because the field was too small. My question is, why would the CPSL let the Dynamites move back to Vanier stadium if the field was too small? It is last minute changes like this that will keep the CPSL from being taking seriously.

The field problems they were having is that the soccernets are not CPSL (or FIFA)regulation size(too high) at Parc Vanier.

What will you be wearing if you come to the Montreal Rochester game??

Why would the CPSL allow a team to play on a field that is not regulation? Isn't that something the CPSL should check out before the season starts? I sent them a little e-mail :([V]

Impact_Supporter, I will probably be wearing an Impact jersey from 1997. I believe I met you at the Ottawa-Canada futsal game during the winter of 2001??

Toronto Croatia 0 Hamilton 3

From the CPSL site:

Hamilton blanked Toronto Croatia by a 3-0 score on second half goals by Denny Velastegui at the 53rd minute mark, Ian Bennett at 80 minutes and David Simpson put the third Hamilton goal past Croatia goalkeeper George Azcurra seven minutes later.

It was Hamilton’s second win for a 2-0-1 WLT record and 7 points for the top position on goal average over ...

Durham 0 North York 2

From the CPSL site:

... the improving North York Astros who also have 7 points following their 2-0 win over Durham Flames at the Civic Stadium in Oshawa.

Boris Krimus opened the scoring for the Astros and when the Flames struggled for the entire second half to get on even terms, Guillermo Compton Hall made sure of the North York win with his first goal of the season at the 90th minute mark

Astros are at a 2-1-1 WLT record in the early season standings.

[I can't believe how well North York is doing! [8D]]

London 2 Vaughan 1

London City were full marks for their first win of a new campaign, taking a 2-0 lead over Vaughan Sun Devils by a 2-0 on goals by Matt Cuthbert after 53 minutes and defender Erik Elmauer at the 76th minute mark. CPSL Toronto Croatia vs Hamilton Thunder
by Rocket Robin
Result of the CPSL game of Friday June 20, 2003 at 8:00pm between Toronto Croatia and Hamilton Thunder played at Memorial Stadium in Streetsville (Mississauga).

52 min...Thunder Denny Velestagi GOAL...Velestagi on rush from 30 yards on left sends blast just inside right post. Wow that was an early candidate for goal of the year!

81 min...Thunder Ian Bennett GOAL...Thunder player's freekick 35 yard blast hits head in TC wall, Bennett gets rebound on left and takes 30 yard blast from left that's into right side of net.

88 min...Thunder David Simpson GOAL...Simpson on breakaway has diving goalie George Azcurra push ball off his foot wide to right. Simpson regains control of ball and cuts back towards center and beats goalie on 10 yard shot to short side of net.

Final Score:....Toronto Croatia....0.....Hamilton Thunder.....3...

Attendance for this Toronto Croatia home opener was about 200 on this warm evening. About the best turnout I remember in a few years for this team.

Toronto Croatia actually had a lot more chances in the first half but couldn't score missing their chances off target more than getting goalie Roberto Ferrari to make difficult saves.

The second half was different with Thunder getting more and more break-ins as Toronto Croatia had to open up to try to come back. Simpson was the fastest player out there even in the late going.

Jose Aniekwe (from North York Astros) and Joseph Lewe (a substitute not used this game) join Toronto Croatia to give them some colour this year. That makes three straight losses for Toronto Croatia to start their season with mostly the same players as last year.

Thunder's coach this year is Duncan Wilde who's come over from England. Thunder is undefeated so far this year.

Referee Isaac Raymond gave out Yellow cards frequently for the rough tackles given out by both teams.

Ottawa 3 Laval 1

The game was pretty even in the first 45 minutes, but Laval took advantage of one of their chances and were up 0:1 at the half. In the second half Ottawa turned it on with three unanswered goals (Some, and two from Marcina). The Laval goalkeeper also saved an Ottawa penalty.

With the victory, the Wizards are now 4-0-1.

Ottawa 3 Laval 1

From the CPSL site:

Ottawa Wizards’ striker Alen Marcina had a penalty kick saved by Laval Dynamites goalkeeper Nicolas Pinto late in the second half of the game played at the OZ Stadium on Saturday afternoon, but Marcina kept up a hot pace in the individual scoring race with a pair of goals during a 3-1 Ottawa victory.

Khalid Mensah put Les Dynamites in front after 26 minutes for a 1-0 half time lead and it took a solo effort by Ottawa midfielder Urbain Some who beat three defenders to level the score at the 68th minute mark. Alen Marcina scored his first when he took a pass from Malawi international Peter Mponda to put Ottawa ahead after 72 minutes and at 93 minutes in injury time Marcina was put in the clear by team-mate Abraham Osman to score his second goal for the 3-1 win. The goals were Marcina’s 7th and 8th of the season.

It’s the Wizards’ fourth win of the season and they now have a 4-0-1 record for 13 points at the top of the Eastern Conference, while Laval Dynamites are at 2-1-0 for six points.

Metro 1 Toronto Supra 2

From the CPSL site:

At Birchmount Stadium in Scarborough just a few hours later, Toronto Supra maintained its unbeaten record with a narrow 2-1 win over Metro Lions, a game decided when Supra’s Michal Di Luca scored from the penalty spot at the 80th minute mark when the teams were tied 1-1 following a hard fought encounter throughout.

Following a scoreless first half, Supra took the lead on a goal at the 63rd minute by Danny Amaral, but it took just two minutes for Lions to tie the game on a goal by Maxim Dorneval.

The win was Supra’s third of the season for a 3-0-1 unbeaten string and 10 points for second position in the Eastern Conference. Metro Lions worsen to 0-2-1 with two points.
