A lot of new faces with the Wizards this year, but I am looking forward to watching Marcina play. They also have a defender from Chicago (Greg Jens) who was an All-American at the DII level in the US.

Keep an eye out for a CPSL game on Rogers Television tonight (Friday, June 13). According to the schedules posted on their Web site, Vaughan vs. Brampton is supposed to be broadcast live in Brampton, Orangeville and York Region at 8:00 PM, while London vs. North York is supposed to be broadcast live at 8:30 PM in London, St. Thomas, Strathroy-Caradoc, Tillsonburg, Toronto (I hope so!) and Woodstock. I'm confident that these games will be broadcast in the regions in which they are being played (all London home games are supposed to be broadcast in London and all Vaughan home games are supposed to be broadcast in York Region), but based on past experience I'm not so sure about the other regions (eg. in Toronto they list London's schedule which doesn't make sense, especially considering that last week we got Vaughan). In addition, you just might find these games on in other regions, and there's probably a good chance that they might be on tape delay instead of or in addition to a live broadcast, which may also vary by region. The bottom line is that you never know what you're going to get with Rogers, so keep your eyes open.

The CPSL Soccer Show is scheduled to be broadcast in Ottawa at 7:00 PM, with repeats on Sunday (when it will also be broadcast in other regions).

London 0 North York 2 [8D]

Kadian Lecky ~70', Kurt Ramsey ~75'

This game was broadcast on Rogers Television in Toronto (I'm not sure about other regions, but it was a London City broadcast so I assume it was broadcast at least in London). The commentators were pretty good by Rogers standards, mainly because they were more subdued than most. They were biased towards London, which was generally okay because it was a London City broadcast after all, except for the fact that they did not know most of the North York players --- the lineups were not even given at the start so I still don't know who they all are (it seems there have been more changes from last year's team than was indicated by Robin and Orville a couple of weeks ago --- in particular, where is Guillermo Compton Hall? I hope he's just injured).

London had the edge in the first half with a few good chances, but North York hung in there. North York had more of the play in the second half, especially after bringing in Lecky up front, and then even moreso after their first goal which seemed to deflate London (though London did come on a bit in the dying minutes). Both goals came when London was unable to clear corners, the first from a scramble right in front of the net and the second from a nice turn and volley by Ramsey near the edge of the box. Ramsey had a good game (I'm really glad they got him to stick around for another year). The final score probably flattered North York, but London just didn't capitalize on their chances.

Vaughan vs. Brampton was postponed due to poor field conditions (it rained most of the the day in the GTA).

Ottawa 2 Toronto Croatia 0

OTT Kevin Nelson 43'
OTT Charles Gbeke 87'

From the CPSL site:

"CPSL champions Ottawa Wizards were fully extended by Toronto Croatia in a thriller at OZ Stadium in one of two games played Saturday afternoon, a game that was in doubt until the last few minutes when the Wizards scored their second goal in a 2-0 win.
[...]
It was the opening home game of the season for Ottawa Wizards on Saturday and the current CPSL champions came through with a 2-0 win on goals by Kevin Nelson after 43 minutes and newcomer Charles Gbeke three minutes from time. Peter Mponda, the Malawi international, played a part in both goals including his corner kick for the second Ottawa goal. The Wizards have a 2-0-1 WLT record."

Laval 3 Durham 2

DUR Johmo Welch 10'
LAV Kyriakos (Kit) Selaidopoulos 36'
LAV Vladmir Edourd 55'
LAV Paul Daccobert 81'
DUR David Mills ~90'

From the CPSL site:

"Laval Dynamites also opened their home season with a 3-2 home win against Durham Flames at Vanier Park in a game played in light rain throughout. Johmo Welch opened the scoring for the Flames at the 10 minute mark and Kyriakos (Kit) Selaidopoulos tied for score for the Dynamites at 36 minutes, a 1-1 score at half-time.

Laval took the lead after 55 minutes on a goal by Vladmir Edourd and the Quebec side jumped into a 3-1 lead after 81 minutes on a strike by Paul Daccobert.

Durham’s David Mills reduced the lead to 3-2 in the dying minutes.

It’s the third loss in four games for Durham Flames who are on a 1-3-0 WLT record since opening the season on May 24."

Yes, Ottawa might have been 'fully extended' by Toronto Croatia, but I honestly can't remember Croatia getting a shot on goal (that hit the net). More on the game later....

Laval-Durham game started 40 minutes late due to a conflict over the size of the net. Attendance was about 100 people. (I did not stay the whole game because of the rain)

The Ottawa Citizen had a brief article about the game today. They reported that the attendance was 400, but the owner of the Wizards is still disappointed with the attendance. He doesn't know what else he can do. Basically he has built and exciting, entertaining team and doesn't know why people don't come out.

Hopefully they will get a bigger crowd out today.

It would be nice if they could get bigger crowds but, in context, 400 people is not bad for a CPSL game. Ottawa may be essentially a pro team but the league as a whole is still semi-pro and the public will react accordingly. Their location also works against them, although you figure they might benefit from the soccer-playing families in Kanata/Stittsville area.

They are also as low profile as it gets in Ottawa. In past years, most of the Citizen articles about them have been written after the end of the season, when they've won everything, basically saying how they are Ottawa's biggest success that no one has heard of (well, no kidding if you guys never cover them!).

I haven't seen today's paper but if they are starting to provide them with more game coverage, then that's a positive. Yesterday was the home opener, so we'll see if it continues.

I believe one of the factors for the small crowd yesterday was the fact the core group of people who come out to these games are families, and right up until kickoff the skies looked very threatening.

It was very cool, as the players lined up for the National Anthem, when the sun broke through the clouds...and remained. Very cool.

I had yet to see such a good defensive performance against the Wizards. Croatia really stifled the offense. The match was completely dominated by the Wizards, but their attack broke down in the final third time after time. Credit to Croatia.

No question the locations hurts them, but as you said they are close to Kanata/Stittsville. I live in the Ottawa Valley, so the location is good for me. :D

The Ottawa Sun had a brief article about the Wizards win. The article was basically who scored and that was it.

Hi everyone. Complete joke of a game this afternoon, really. 7-1 to the Wizards. Hat-trick by Marcina and two goals from Abraham Osman...

Attendance was less than yesterday, despite a beautiful afternoon. Considering the final score, I can't blame anyone.

Wasn't the final score 8-1? Not that it really matters.... [:p]

Durham scored their only goal with a few seconds left in the game. Simon Eady <sp> played in goal for Ottawa today and made a few fantastic saves. The Durham defence looked slow and couldn't keep up with the Ottawa strikers.

I felt bad for the Durham keeper after he let in that soft seventh goal.

Looking forward to the game against the Dynamite next weekend. :D

Better edited than last post...

Result of the CPSL game between Toronto Supra and Mississauga Olympians played at Centennial Stadium in Etobicoke at 8:30pm. (yeah just a few hours after the A-League Toronto Lynx and Syracuse Salty Dogs played to a 0-0 overtime tie).

42 min...Supra Fabio Silva GOAL...Supra Martin Petaza cornerkick from left into box, MO goalie Dino Perri gets hand to it when Silva takes short shot but Silva knocks ball in from 1 yard.

53 min...Supra Fabio Silva GOAL...Supra Christian Lombardo crosses ball in from right, Silva heads ball from 10 yards that goalie gets hand to but can't hold on to ball and drops into net.

92 min...MO RED card...Sam Borgh earns it for tackling Supra Pedro Dias in MO end injuring him. Referee Gord Arrowsmith pulls out the Red card in game he had good control over.
game ends at 92 minutes anyway.

Final Score:....Toronto Supra....2.....Mississauga Olympians....0...

As Fabio Silva doesn't speak English, I'll thank teammate Martin Peraza for translating who set up those goals.

Attendance was about 125 on this warm evening. The field was still in rough shape from last Sunday's Supra game played in a storm then today's Lynx game.

Olympians play on their games on the road this year. Their roster looks a lot different than last year. Dino Perri and Sam Borgh from Hamilton Thunder, Danny Gallagher from St Catharines, Paul Moore has also played for St Catharines. Ferdinando Tantalo and John Matas played for Metro Lions last year. Only the CPSL's leading scorer last year Darren Tilley was from last year's Olympians.

Toronto Supra has Jarek Radzinski on their roster this year and tonight he led a few rushes into the Olympians end. Supra captain Danny Amaral also looked dangerous. Goalie Michael Silva had to be sharp on a few occasions to earn the shutout.

[u]CPSL reports of June 15 matches</u>

Ottawa 8 Durham 1

"Alen Marcina, a 24 year old striker and recent signing by Ottawa Wizards, tore the Durham Flames defense apart with three goals in the first 22 minutes of the 8-1 win on Sunday afternoon and by half-time the score was 6-0 on goals also by Abraham Osman 28 minutes, his first of two in the game, and Kevin Nelson at the 37th and 40th minute mark. Robert Dow added a goal for Ottawa after 75 minutes and Osman scored his second 12 minutes later. Mike Mason struck the lone marker for the Flames in injury time for an 8-1 final score.

The hat-trick is the second by Marcina this season, he scored three in the Wizards’ 4-2 win over St. Catharines Roma Wolves on June 8."

Laval 3 Mississauga 0

"Leo Incollingo opened the scoring after 27 minutes for Laval in the 3-0 shutout of Toronto Croatia on Sunday, with Nasson Theosmy (37 minutes) and Nick Kotirotti (44 minutes) adding the other two first half markers."

The Wizards' web site has the score listed at 8-1, for what its worth.

Father's Day is likely the culprit for the lower attendance. That's my excuse :-)

Well, the owner could try playing a few matches in a more central location! He should realize this isn't hockey. Just because you build it doesn't mean they will come. I doubt most people in the nation's capital even know a team call the Wizards exists and they are not willing to travel far to watch soccer. This is the reality. 400 fans is actually a decent crowd for the CPSL as I understand it.

The Wizards should play a few matches at Terry Fox or at Keith Harris stadium. This would be a better guage of whether the club can expect better crowds if they are in the A-League. If they remain at the OZ stadium I can't see them attracting the fans at the gate to warrant stepping up to the A-League or remaining there for long should they try.

The field at Terry Fox is in rough shape. Keith Harris stadium has a decent field, but why would the owner leave a field that he spent $250,000 to build?

I'm sure the OZ stadium is great. However, if the Wizards want to increase attendance they will have to consider playing elsewhere. Otherwise the owner should be content with 500-600 in the crowd. Frankly, I'm surprised that he is surprised that attendance is not greater. A central Ottawa location is important unless he believes the Kanata region should deliver the majority of fans. As I said, this isn't hockey we are talking about.

To be fair, its not just the Wizards. I have often wondered whether international rugby attendance would be greater in eastern Canada if we could somehow play our matches in less remote locations than Twin Elm park in Ottawa or Fletcher's Fields in Markham.

But, I could be wrong. Perhaps the upcoming exhibition match between the Wizards and the A-League's Charlotte Eagles will produce strong numbers at the turnstiles. We'll see. I look forward to hearing how the team does on and off the field.

I think that even playing one or two important late season league or Cup games, or even an exhibition, at a central location (even Frank Clair potentially) might work wonders in terms of marketing. It's really out-of-sight, out-of-mind if they continue to play in Carp, $250k or not. It might be different if they had any kind of advertising and marketing budget.

The exhibition against Charlotte is a good idea, but an exhibition against a Canadian A-League team would be a better idea, and if it were held centrally they might actually get some attention. A game against Montreal or Toronto (maybe Toronto would be a closer match) on Canada Day, for example, might get some decent media converage.
