Am I seeing properly? Are you actually picking North York to win? ;)

Excellent job on the CPSL history section. However, in the first table ("Season Overview") on the main archive page you should label the last column as "League Cup Champions" or even just "Cup Champions" rather than "League Champions".

In spite of the claims that the number of
SARS cases is going down in the City of Toronto, the impact of this deadly virus is starting to have devastating affect on other Major Canadian Centers.
The Hamilton Thunder Professional Soccer Team announced this morning in Hamilton that the Juventus Soccer Club has cancelled their exhibition game scheduled for June 17th in Hamilton. This was to be one of two stops in Canada for the prestigious Italian Soccer Club. The Juventus Soccer Club is currently on a North American Tour.
Italian parliament’s recently introduced legislation that requires all citizens traveling anywhere in Canada to go into quarantine on return to Italy was cited as the reason for the cancellation.
Italo Ferrari, owner of the Hamilton Soccer Team stated: “This is great disappointment for us. It is a major fundraiser for this local soccer club and well as a great opportunity to expose our developing players and young fans to the caliber of soccer seen in the international arena.”
The Hamilton Thunder Professional Soccer Club is planning other events throughout the season.

DJT :

Moosehead and I have talked about this recently and I want to see what you think of this idea:

When there are 20 teams within the CPSL in Ontario and Quebec, what about dividing the CPSL into 2 divisions:

Premier Division :

8 teams - Central Conference - Ontario and Quebec

Division 1 :

6-8 teams - Western Division - Western and Southern Ontario

6-8 teams - Eastern Division - Eastern Ontario and Quebec

Pomotion/relegation:

Last place Premier Division team goes down and the Winner - Eastern vs Western team - goes up for that year.

What do you think?

Looking forward to your reply.

I know that you're asking DJT, but I think it's a fantastic idea. I believe that were this to happen, it would eventually encourage a National League.

Question now is: Where are the teams to be located?

Here are my suggestions:

[u]Premier</u>:

Toronto 1 (West)
Toronto 2 (West)
Hamilton (West)
Niagara (West)
Ottawa (East)
Montreal (East)
Quebec 1 (East)
Gatineau (East)

[u]Division 1 West</u>:

Toronto 3
Barrie
St. Catherines
London
Kitchener
Sudbury
North Bay
Oshawa

[u]Division 1 East</u>:

Montreal 2
Laval
Trois Riviere
Quebec 2
Chicoutimi
Kingston
Sherbrooke
Victoriaville

But can this CPSL format of a Premier Division and Division 1 be replicated in the West(from Manitoba to BC) and -or the Atlantic provinces.

And do you think it would be doable to have promotion between the CPSL and the provincial leagues.

Something like this:

CPSL Atlantic

D1 - NSSL, NBSL, PEISA, NLSA

CPSL Central

D1 -LSEQ, OSL

CPSL Praries

D1 - MMSL, SSL

CPSL West

D1 - AMSL, PCSL

Although the "Levels" would be artificial in terms of quality, it's a great idea for league organization in terms of interleague tournaments below A-League level.
There will never be a true Canada -wide league though, we are not the size or disposition of Slovenia (practicalities, finances).....

Unless......... the Americans do us a favor and decide in a few years that their own National Agenda means kicking out the Canadian teams from the A-League. Again, the pain will mean that it will never occur within Canada, the motivation will have to come from outside. That is the only way a truly national First Division will ever occur.

In the meantime, sounds great!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

Actually, I see the leagues I spoke about earlier attracting teams on the outer fringes of the regions, much like the OHL and the QMJHL has done.

For example, the Maritime teams would ask to get teams in Quebec, and more and more Ontario teams would be added and perhaps even expand into Manitoba. \

The need for a National League would grow naturally.

What would happen then out west (Saskatchewan, Alberta and British Columbia) ? Would they create their own divisions (Pemier and Division 1) Even if a national league were to be created, there would stil have to be East and West Divisions, (in the abscence of a single table)

Maybe there could be a Premier Division in the West (Saskatchewan to BC) and the D1 would be the Prarie Division(Saskatchewan and Alberta) and Pacific (British Columbia)

You will be at the Impact game tomorrow. What will you be wearing?

We could have a three-tiered system in every major region (West, Central, Atlantic). At the end of the year, the champions of each region (and the host city) could have a championship, using the CHL as a model! Yay!

I remember reading that a few amateur teams pulled out of the CPSL Open Cup because they were worried that their college players might lose scholarships.

If this is the case, why are college players on PDL and US amateur teams allowed to compete in the US Open Cup? Just like the CPSL Open Cup, the US Open Cup also has cash prizes.

Vaughan 0 Metro 0

This game was on Rogers Television in Toronto! I'm not sure about other regions. It was on tape delay, probably started around 10:30 or 11 PM. I just found it by accident towards the end of the first half. The score is very misleading: it was a well-played game, lots of chances, entertaining (certainly moreso than most of what we've seen of the Lynx on Rogers Television so far). The commentators said that the next broadcast will be Vaughan vs. Brampton next Friday, June 13 at 8 PM --- who knows which regions will have it, plus I'm suspicious about the time since that would make it a live broadcast.

Sigma, where did you get your info that this match was to be played in Vaughan? You were correct, but the CPSL site says that it was a Metro home game (they list home teams first). The strange part is that the Inferno were scheduled to play at Birchmount as well --- and neither game was played there!

London 1 Mississauga 1

32' - London - Andrew Logue
90' - Mississauga - Johnny Matas

[u]CPSL report:</u>

OLYMPIANS SCORE IN DYING SECONDS OF GAME APPEARED WON BY YOUNG LONDON CITY SQUAD

Sun Devils and Metro Lions battle to a scoreless tie

A goal in the last few seconds produced a 1-1 tie between London City and Mississauga Olympians at Cove Road in London Friday and while this was taking place, Vaughan Sun Devils and Metro Lions battled to a scoreless tie at the Dufferin Clark ground in Vaughan, just north of Toronto.

A goal by London City’s Andrew Logue at the 32nd minute mark of a hard-fought contest appeared to give the City its first win of the new season until Johnny Matas found the net with just seconds remaining in the game with Mississauga Olympians. The tie was a heartbreaker for the young London City squad playing a team of veterans and a visiting team favoured to win its opening game of the season.

The scoreless tie, involving a Sun Devils team that was the final product of a merger with last year’s York Region Shooters, was played before a well-attended crowd in fine opening night weather.

London City will now play its third game of the season at Cove Road next Friday, while the Olympians travel to Hamilton for a game with the Thunder the night before, on Thursday, June 12.

The Sun Devils are also at home next Friday, they host Brampton Hitmen, while Metro Lions will not see action until June 16, a clash with North York Astros at Esther Shiner Stadium.

From the CPSL site:

Hamilton Thunder of the CPSL's Western Conference have cancelled an exhibition game with the Juventus Primavera youth team scheduled for Timmis Stadium in Hamilton on June 17.

But a game to be played two days earlier, on June 15 with Brampton Hitmen, is still on, says Hitmen owner Steve Nijjar, who also coaches the team.

"The visit of Juventus Primavera to Canada is still on," said Nijjar who obtained confirmation of this on Friday, June 6, from the U.S. agent in Des Moines acting for the team from Turin, Italy. Juventus Primavera, the youth team of Serie A champion Juventus F.C., is expected to arrive at Toronto on Saturday, June 14, with a game scheduled for the following day at Victoria Park in Brampton, a 2 p.m. kickoff. A further announcement is expected to be made on Tuesday, June 10.

So, what's going on with Hamilton? What's with that excuse?

OLYMPIANS , LONDON; SUN DEVILS, LIONS; HITMEN, WIZARDS ALL TIE
A goal by London City’s Andrew Logue at the 32nd minute mark of a hard-fought contest appeared to give the City its first win of the new season until Johnny Matas found the net with just seconds remaining in the game with Mississauga Olympians. The tie was a heartbreaker for the young London City squad playing a team of veterans and a visiting team favoured to win its opening game of the season.

The scoreless tie at Dufferin Clark involving a Sun Devils team that was the final product of a merger with last year’s York Region Shooters, was played before a well-attended crowd in fine opening night weather.

Kevin Nelson of Ottawa Wizards opened the scoring for his team two minutes before the interval in an exciting opener at Victoria Park on Saturday afternoon, the goal entering the net on a deflection off Hitmen midfielder, Maximiliaro Andrada, but four minutes from time Marcin Wysocki of Brampton levelled the score for a 1-1 tie final score.

Despite the one-sided 4-1 final score in favour of Hamilton Thunder over Durham Flames Saturday night, the game was a physical rough and tumble affair which saw Hamilton take a 2-0 lead on goals by Ian Bennett (14 minutes)and Dave Simpson (20 minutes), before David Mills made it 2-1, scoring for the Flames at the 70th minute mark. Gaston Bizera of Hamilton made it 3-1 at the 75th minute mark and Jason Crnic struck the fourth Hamilton goal on a penalty kick after 87 minutes.

A skirmish at the final whistle resulted in Hamilton's Nico Pocu being ejected.

Saw the game Sigma, albeit on TV (local cable). Wanted to go, but just could not in the end.

Exciting game, good crowd (commentator said close to 1,000). Allan Marcina (sp?) scored 3 for Ottawa and I believe Nelson got the other. Arghittu and Mulholland for Wolves.

Ottawa looked really skilled, big, fast and strong. Marcina looks like a wonderful player. Can anyone give me some information on him?

Sigma
06-08-2003, 08:49 PM
Marcina played at a top DII school in Florida. In January he attended the MLS combine (top college players) and he led the week long series of games in scoring. He had a tryout with the Impact earlier this year. The CPSL will be a good league for Marcina to develop his skills. Hopefully he will improve enough this season to make an A-League team next year.

Thanks for the report :)

And two and a half hours after the Toronto Lynx game, the Toronto Supra played North York Astros on the same Centennial field however we had 90 minutes of hard rain between games and the first 30 minutes of the game played in a hard rain which only slowed up as the game went on. The field was turned into a mud pit. Attendance was about 60 who mostly sheltered under the pressbox or umbrellas. Good thing I am always invited INSIDE the press box so my notes don't turn to pulp.

21 minutes...A stadium official maybe from Parks N Rec calls the referee over to stop the game. "I cannot stop the game" says referee Yakov Keimach (once it starts).

The game is a mess with sliding tackles and guys on breakaways having the ball stop on them in puddles. A guy gets tackled in the center circle and risks drowning while lying face down waiting a trainer.

68 min...Astros goalie Luciano Miranda pulls down Supra Fabio Silva racing on left iside box injuring him as he might have got to ball. Referee calls penalty kick.

69 min...Supra Michael Diluca GOAL...Diluca takes penalty kick low to right side of net leaving Miranda not sliding over far enough.

88 min...Astros Pablo Politi RED card...Politi kicks Pedro Dias from behind on edge of Astros box injuring him.

Final Score:...Toronto Supra....1.....North York Astros...0...

Supra's Michael Silva earned the shutout and was helped by crossbars saving shots. Both goalie's had trouble hanging on to the slippery ball although Miranda seemed to have the surer hands.

Watch highlights of this game on Portuguese sports news on OMNI 1 on Tuesday night at 5:00pm eastern time. (Channel 47 cable 4 for locals). So if you thought the Belmont Stakes horse race was muddy wait until you see the hydroplaning in this game.

Thanks Robin. I was thinking of making it out to the game but when it started raining, together with thunder and lightning... Sounds like the game shouldn't have been played at all (just when the Centennial field was starting to look at least a little decent).

Not the best result, but it sounds like North York did well. I know that you're going to take some time to do the full report, but can you give me North York's roster now?

BTW, I've started building your 2003 CPSL Soccer Show mega-tape.

Thanks for starting a super tape for me. Broadcaster Alex Franco says he'll have hilites on this OMNI 1 sportscast on Tuesday 5:00pm...repeat Wednesday 6:00am. Monday night would be filled with Euro2004 stuff I suspect and he says he's going to be out of town.

I won't have time for super reports on the CPSL until the season is over. Goalscorers, red cards and my impressions of the game should be up within 48 hours but lineups, and minute by minute comments will have to wait.
