View Full Version : Voyageurs Contributions

Do we have an official fund set up for our endeavours? From what I've read, the only funds Voyageurs have is leftovers from the Voyagueurs Cup.
Have we thought about setting up an official fund? I know I would contribute to it. We could possibly have a louder voice in this country if we had funds to back it up.
Thoughts?

I think that some of the VCup funds were put towards maintaining the Voyageurs site--it was suggested and I don't think there were any arguments against it.
However, I agree, we should have some kind of income. Personal donations are of course a good thing to ask, although I would suggest that, unlike with the VCup:
a set amount be suggested for all (e.g. five bucks), since we have neither a large or time-dependent requirement (as we did for the cup) voting or any other participation with the Voyageurs not be dependent on contributing (in fact for that reason I would suggest not publishing donators' names)There's also merchandising as a revenue source. For that, though, we need to look for merchandise that will sell to non-Voyageurs (e.g. remember the Holger's Heroes shirts in May '00? No reason we couldn't duplicate that success).
The problem with merchandising is that it usually requires some starting capital, and maybe that's something we could try to get some significant donations for. (Or maybe some VCup funds could be used on a loan basis, but I don't really like the idea of playing fast and loose with the VCup funds.)
Any other ideas?

I also believe advertising what we've got here would be advantageous. People get more involved in something when they feel they are part of a community, and attracting new members should be a top priority.
Therefore, I suggest using potential funds in placing advertising banners in the media (internet and print). For example, adding the Voyageurs banner in any soccer article on Canoe.ca or canada.com . Likewise, we could do some advertising in the print newspapers like the Sun (yuck) or the Globe and Mail. I realize that the second option would be much more costly, perhaps even out of our range.
I truly believe that the more members we have, the healthier the sport in our country becomes.

I like the advertising idea. Rather than go mainstream though, I think we should probably try to go more underground and try things like postering and putting up flyers at soccer shops and at fields in the weeks and months leading up to games in that city. I know we need games in the country first, but I think it's a decent first step. Would also hopefully let people who want to be loud know where they should want to be standing during the game.
It was suggested at the Scotland game that we could have put a piece of paper with the web site address on the 300 seats in our section and hopefully some of the people there might have joined.
t-shirts aren't a bad idea either. The one I bought off the Tartan Army has their web address on it and half the people on that site have a shirt from the site that they wear to matches with their 'handle' on the back. They get some stick in the press "too drunk to remember their own names, need it written on their shirts" kind of stuff, but it must certainly get them noticed a bit.
cheers,
matthew
The secret of life is to find moments of levity and grace in what is, ultimately, a tragedy. Watching Canadian soccer is good practice for this.

I think the t-shirts would be great to rase some money and then the money should be spent on advertising.

Hey, like that "Tartan Army" t-shirt gig with your handle on the back. Gotta have fun with it. Half the attraction of football is that fellowship in the grandstand. True to hockey, Canadian football, whatever, but more so in football than any other sport that I can think of. We are a bit of an oddity though so we might as well advertise it.
Let me know. Help out where we can.

Bringing a home made out to 'Toon town for the Whitecap-Storm match next weekend so hopefully we'll hook up with some of the lads out there and see what they think but no preview untell then.
Must put the web site address on it somewhere but don't need to over announce it, and if you want your forum handle. Think it would be fun running into this person or that and finaly being able to put a face & voice to the writings. But other than that could do all kinds of stuff. Graphics, scribblings, quotes from the forum which stand out (and they don't necessarily have to be short. Had a home made years back with a Billy Bragg tune and stick men on it, would take the ladys a good couple of drinks to read the lyrics).
Just pitching them out here.

Digital printing sure opens the doors to options. Hell, we could offer downloads and people could print their own tees. Ask for a contribution if you they use the service. That sort of thing.

I know we've had a suitable accountant in the past in Winnipeg Fury, but I understand he's not on this board... maybe try him at the old board...

I think that the Cup showed that these things are possible, and are not that hard to do. It just takes some leg work from a small number of people, and usually the rest of the Voyageurs are willing to jump on in.
I'm always happy to pitch in with any of these initiatives, but I've been heavily involved with the V-Cup and I'm not really willing or able these days to take the point position on another project. But if you're looking to get something done, by all means bring it up. Or e-mail me directly, I'd be glad to give you what benefit you might gain from my experience so far...
