The game between London AEK Olympic and Woodbrige will be played on the weekend of June 27-30.That's the same weekend as the next round, so if this match is played in London on the Friday then the winner can go on to play London City on the Sunday or Monday (is Monday a holiday?).
Unfortunately the CPSL has not been very specific about the format of the tournament. There are 17 teams in the next round, which poses a problem. At some point there will have to be a group of three teams with the winner advancing. How about Ottawa, Laval and Kanata forming a group in the next round? Then we'd be left with Toronto Benfica and Toronto Peniche matched up with Golden Horseshoe teams. It may sound ideal but I don't like the option of postponing the group until the final weekend because then in all previous rounds some team would have to get a bye, which wouldn't be fair.

Yeah, I never thought about what might happen during the next round. It makes sense that one CPSL team might host two other teams on a weekend.

Looks like the draw for the second round has been completed...
"City has also been awarded host duties for the second round of the open Canada Cup.
Cove Road field was also the site of the Cup preliminary round.
London AEK Olympic and Woodbridge Azzurri will play on June 27 the game that was rained out last Friday.
London City's first Cup game is June 30 at 7 p.m. against Toronto Peniche."

Typical that the CPSL still hasn't released any info yet. As looks like London City will host the second round of the CPSL Cup (according to this article). Bah!

What a brutal format to this 'Cup'. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for the byes. Why make two Toronto teams travel to London to play a game? Two more amateur teams playing each other in the second round, making sure none make it to the finals. And what is with the 5 team final weekend???? Brutal and unfair format!:(
The better method is to fit the 22 teams into a standard 32 team draw. This gives 10 teams a bye to the 2nd round and the remaining 12 teams to play for the 6 other spots in round 2. The CPSL teams would be seeded based on last years results (I used league standings in my model). The amateur enteries would be drawn at random. The only problem with the standard draw format, it does not allow for the 5 team final weekend the CPSL has become familiar with. Instead of the 4 game weekend it would be 3 and probably no game on Friday night.
Round 1 might look something like this. (really only 6 games to be played with 8 scheduled for round 2)
1 Ottawa Wizards
32 bye
17 Real - Richmond Hill
16 Benfica - Toronto
9 Vaughan Sun Devils
24 bye
25 bye
8 Durham Flames
5 Mississauga Olympians
28 bye
21 Woodbridge Azzuri
12 Toronto Supra
13 London City
20 AEK London
29 bye
4 Toronto Croatia
3 Metro Lions
30 bye
19 Exeter Centennials
14 Kanata
11 Brampton Hitmen
22 FC Levski - Montreal
27 bye
6 Hamilton Thunder
7 St. Catharines Roma Wolves
26 bye
23 bye
10 North York Astros
15 Whitby Iroquois
18 Peniche - Toronto
31 bye
2 Montreal Dynamites

OPEN CANADA CUP COMPETITION RESUMES ON FRIDAY
The Open Canada Cup competition involving all 13 pro teams of the CPSL and some of the strongest amateur teams in Ontario and the Province of Quebec, all playing for the hardware and a winner-take-all cash prize of $10,000, resumes this coming weekend.
It’s a string of nine games starting with two games on Friday, June 27, two games on Saturday, two on Sunday, one on Monday, ending with a double header on Canada Day, Tuesday, July 1. All CPSL regular league competition is suspended during this period, including a Brampton Hitmen vs. Mississauga Olympians clash previously in the league’s official printed schedule for Sunday, June 29.
A Preliminary Round game between AEK (London) and Woodbridge Azzurri (Vaughan), postponed from May 16 when heavy rains flooded the Cove Road ground in London, will be played at the same location this Friday, June 27. Kickoff time is 8.30 pm.
Just 15 minutes earlier at 8.15 pm, St. Catharines Roma Wolves will kickoff their game against Benfica, an amateur team from Toronto, and this game will take place at the Club Roma ground in St. Catharines.
Birchmount Stadium will be the site of the first game on Saturday when Metro Lions and Brampton Hitmen will play their Open Canada Cup second round game at 8.00 pm as part of the Robbie International Tournament, the popular annual festival of soccer, with proceeds going to Muscular Dystrophy and Cystic Fibrosis.
Down the 401 in Southwestern Ontario, the Cove Road home of London City will be the site of the second game on Saturday, with Hamilton Thunder taking on Vaughan Sun Devils.
Play resumes at The Cove the following day, Sunday, June 29, when at 4.30 pm it will be Toronto Croatia vs. Toronto Supra.
Meanwhile, in Eastern Ontario at the OZ Stadium in Carp, Kanata takes on FC Levski, a strong amateur squad from Montreal. Kanata advanced following an emphatic 7-0 rout of Whitby Iroquois in the Preliminary Round on May 17.
There will be just one game on Monday when London City host Peniche at The Cove in London and that game will start at 8.30 pm. Peniche is an amateur team from Toronto that eliminated Exeter Centennials, 3-1, on May 29.
Canada Day will see a double header at the Cove in London when North York Astros and Durham Flames clash in the afternoon at 3.15 pm and in the evening at 7 Mississauga Olympians will take on the winner of the rescheduled Preliminary Round game between AEK Of London and Woodbridge Azzurri played on June 27.
Gaining a bye are Ottawa Wizards and Laval Dynamites, so that there will be 10 teams taking part in Round Three.
The five surviving teams from Round Three will meet in the final weekend when a Wild Card game will be followed by two semi-final games and the Open Canada Cup Final on Labour Day, September 1.
[u]June 27 results</u>
[u]First Round</u>: AEK London 6 Woodbridge Azzurri 0 (at London)
[u]Second Round</u>: St. Catharines 1 Toronto Benfica 0 (at St. Catharines)
From the CPSL site:
WOODBRIDGE AZZURRI CRASH, ST.CATHARINES NIP BENFICA 1-0
Woodbridge Azzurri is one of the most highly regarded amateur teams in Ontario but its Open Canada Cup aspirations came crashing down when the local AEK London dominated throughout for a 6-0 win in a Preliminary Round encounter at The Cove in London Friday night.
St. Catharines Roma Wolves also took the opportunity to advance in Open Canada Cup with a narrow 1-0 win over Benfica of Toronto at Club Roma in St. Catharines.
These were two of nine games being played over the Canada Day long weekend in a one-game knockout competition that involves all 13 CPSL teams and nine of the strongest amateur teams in Ontario and the Province of Quebec. There is a winner-take-all prize of $10,000 for the team that is victorious in the final game set for Labour Day, Monday September 1.
Survivors of this second round will advance to Round Three to be played during the Civic Holiday, August 1 – 4, leaving a wild card game, two semi-finals and the final game over the Labour Day weekend.
AEK London took the lead after just four minutes on a strike by Jim Tsaprailis, one of two scored by the AEK forward, and the London team never looked back with goals also by Jim Balatsoukas, Matt Gallo, Xavier Patural and Gistard De Gourville. It was 2-0 at half-time.
St. Catharines Roma Wolves made hard work of their 1-0 win over amateur team Benfica, but the CPSL squad did prevail to advance on a goal at the 32nd minute by Tony Carbonara.
AEK London will now meet Mississauga Olympians in a second round on Canada Day at Cove Road in London, a 7.00 pm kickoff.

i believe it's been asked before, but is there any chance of the cpsl and the pcsl becoming a joint venture, even if it's just for various cup matches? alberta has a pretty succesful league as well. i know nothing of any quebec, sask, maritimes, or manitoban league of similar level. frankly, i think the pcsl would do very well against the ontario clubs.
there ain't gonna be any middle any more.

I don't know, is this better? To me it is. Maybe no one else cares either way, though.
The first three Round 1 pairs are fine. I'd just suggest that the fourth pair be moved down so that it is directly across from the London City/Peniche pair in Round 2 (ie. so that the line is straight). Maybe I'm being picky, but I think once the entire bracket is filled it is easier to mentally process if things are lined up that way. This means that when the Round 3 draw is made you have to go back and move everything in Round 1 and 2 to make them line up better with Round 3 (eg. if Mississauga and Hamilton win in Round 2 and are drawn against each other in Round 3 then their boxes in Round 2 should be placed next to each other so that all the lines between Round 2 and 3 do not criss-cross).
Sorry if I sound too critical. The fact is you're doing a great job. I think these things should be done for all cup tournaments (in fact I usually draw them for myself for all the tournaments I follow closely).

I have no idea, but there are 20 teams that entered the competition. They each had to pay $595 entry fee. Thus, the CPSL received about $12,000 from the entry fees.
I wouldn't think the CPSL is making a profit from the cup.

[u]Sunday's Second Round results</u>
Kanata 3 FC Levski Montreal 2 (at Ottawa)
Toronto Supra 4 Toronto Croatia 2 (at London)
From the CPSL site:
It was very much end-to-end soccer when Toronto Supra maintained its unbeaten record in league and cup competition, with a 4-2 Open Canada Cup win over struggling Toronto Croatia, which has yet to win a game.
Edin Kallic opened the scoring after 14 minutes for Toronto Croatia and Danny Amaral tied the score for Supra at the 38th minute mark.It was 1-1 at half-time. Josip Bucic put Croatia 2-1 up just two minutes after the interval before Supra struck for three unanswered goals by Avio Silva at 51 minutes, Jarek Radzinski [Tomasz' brother!] at 62 minutes and Michal Di Luca late in the second half for a 4-2 final score.
[u]Monday's Second Round result</u>
London 2 Peniche (Toronto) 1 - AGGET (at London)
From the CPSL site:
London City fought back from a 1-0 deficit for almost the entire second half in a thriller at The Cove in London. Bruno Real scored for Peniche right on half time following a tough 45 minutes for both teams and the score held up until City's Andrew Loague tied the game at the 90th minute mark.
Erik Elmauer was the hero for London with a strike just three minutes into overtime for a 2-1 golden goal result and Round Three for the team from Southwestern Ontario.
[u]Tuesday's Second Round result - first match</u>
Durham 2 North York 0 (at London)
Damn, this is the first time this season that I actually expected North York to win. :(
From the CPSL site:
In the opening game of a Cove Road double header, Durham Flames advanced with a 2-0 shutout win over North York Astros.
Durham Flames were hot in defeating North York Astros on goals by Jamal Jupiter after 38 minutes and a second half marker by David Mills at the 58th minute mark.

[u]Tuesday's Second Round result - second match</u>
AEK London 2 Mississauga 1 (at London)
The first upset of a CPSL team by an amateur team in the Cup!
From the CPSL site:
Theory has it that at some point in history kings in Greece reigned for one year before they were killed. There must have been some truth to that because Greek myths came later and were followed by the Greek tragedies.
Soccer teams have been known to last longer.
But in the case of Mississauga Olympians, founded as Toronto Olympians by Coffee Time president Tom Mikalopoulos, a Greek-Canadian and lover of the world’s game who set Olympians on a winning journey in 1998 to capture six out of the nine titles the CPSL had to offer, it all seems so long ago.
His team, ably propelled by general manager sometimes coach Davis Gee, was once considered one of the top pro teams in the country.
But suddenly that all changed at Cove Road in London on Canada Day when Mississauga Olympians were eliminated from the Open Canada Cup by AEK London, a lowly amateur team operating quietly and without any special distinction in the Western Ontario Soccer League.
The 2-1 AEK London win was no myth. It was a shocker. Perhaps even a Greek tragedy. The AEK amateurs were determined--and gritty in their win.
Even if Olympians are just a shadow of the squad that dominated the CPSL in those early years, and even if AEK put some writing on the wall with an impressive 6-0 win over highly regarded Woodbridge Azzurri in the Preliminary Round of the Open Canada Cup on June 27, the defeat has CPSL heads scratching.
It was real, with AEK goals by Ryan Leigh at the 37th minute mark and Matt Gallo after 78 minutes, the 2-0 lead proved insurmountable even when some fans considered it just a matter of time before Olympians would retaliate. They did retaliate on a goal at the 86th minute mark by former Hamilton Thunder player Geoff Attard—but it was too little, too late.
OPEN CANADA CUP THIRD ROUND DRAW ANNOUNCED
Tuesday, July 1--Two amateur teams, Kanata of the Eastern Ontario Soccer Association, and AEK London of the Western Ontario Soccer League, will mix it up with the eight pro CPSL teams in Open Canada Cup third round play during the Civic Holiday weekend.
Seven amateur teams from Ontario and the Province of Quebec have now been eliminated, together with CPSL teams Mississauga Olympians, North York Astros, Brampton Hitmen, Hamilton Thunder and Toronto Croatia.
The third round draw announced on Canada Day by the Canadian Professional Soccer League has Kanata meeting unbeaten Toronto Supra, while AEK London will clash with Durham Flames.
The ten third round teams will come together Civic Holiday weekend August 1 – 4 at venues to be announced this coming Friday.
The five winning teams from the third round will move forward to the final weekend of play during the Labour Day holiday weekend. The final weekend will kickoff with a Wild card game, followed by the two semi-finals and the Open Canada Cup Final on Labour Day, September 1.
The third round draw is:
Ottawa Wizards vs. Laval Dynamites
Kanata vs. Toronto Supra
London City vs. St. Catharines Roma Wolves
Metro Lions vs. Vaughan Sun Devils
Durham Flames vs. AEK London
[I'd say AEK has a very real chance of advancing to the final weekend!]

Wow, I didn't expect the CPSL to come out with the third round draw so quickly. AEK London has a good chance to make it to the final weeked, and I think Kanata has a small chance. Kanata is not even in the OCSL men's premier division. They are playing in second or third division....

Kind of unfortunate in a way. It would have been nice to draw Kanata and get a real local 'derby'. Ottawa already plays so many matches against Laval, that yet-another-one is not as attractive as seeing a different team. On the other hand, it might turn out to be a much better match than it would have been against Kanata. The last Ottawa-Laval match was pretty entertaining and evenly matched (in the first half anyway).

The Third Round will kickoff with one game between London City and St. Catharines Roma Wolves and this will be followed by a second game on Sunday when Ottawa Wizards clash with Laval Dynamites.
The three remaining games will now be played holiday Monday, August 4, a change from the previously announced three games on Saturday. These games, as previously announced, will be played at the Dufferin Clark home ground of Vaughan Sun Devils, situated on the east side of Dufferin Street, just north of Steeles Avenue in the City of Vaughan.

Sun., Aug. 3 OZ Stadium 4.00 p.m. Ottawa Wizards vs. Laval Dynamites

Mon., Aug. 4 Dufferin Clark 8 p.m. Durham Flames vs. AEK London
[u]Third Round - Match 1</u>
Friday, August 1
St. Catharines 2 London 1 (at London)
From the CPSL site:
With just minutes to go in a 1-1 see-saw struggle to advance to the final round of the Open Canada Cup, a miscue in the London goalmouth gave St. Catharines Wolves a 2-1 win over London City in the opener of five third round games being played in the Canadian Professional Soccer League this Civic Holiday weekend.
Wolves’ forward Carlo Arghitto capped a super week by scoring the winner, his eighth of the season at the 83rd minute mark when he capitalized on a mis-kick by City ‘keeper Haidar Al-Shalbani to win what might turn out to be one of the most important wins of the season for St. Catharines Wolves.
Arghitto was outstanding on Wednesday night in leading his team with a three-goal natural hat-trick in a 3-1 league win over North York Astros.
Thomas Latocha, brought into the St. Catharines pro team from the club’s second string for just the second time, scored his first goal in the CPSL to open the scoring at 36 minutes for a 1-0 half-time lead.
Eris Tafaj scored with a screamer of a free kick from 40 yards to level the score 1-1 for London City and just when the game appeared to be heading for overtime, Arghitto scored the winner for St. Catharines.

Ottawa Wizards 1-0 Laval Dynamites (aet)
91' Peter Mponda
Ottawa completely controlled the whole match. I think they had 2 shots come off the posts, and they were camped in the Laval area for pretty much the entire second half. Laval had a couple decent chances on counter attacks.
At the full time whistle, half the fans started leaving, so they had to make an announcement that the game wasn't over yet. :D

It seemed Ottawa had at least 75% of the possesion today. Laval packed a lot of players in the back and hoped for a goal off of a counter attack. They (Laval) had one good chance off of a header... their player really should have done better.
Ottawa also has about four new players.

CPSL report for Ottawa vs. Laval:
A golden goal in the first minute of overtime by Malawi international midfielder Peter Mponda gave the Ottawa Wizards a 1-0 win in an Open Canada Cup squeaker against Laval Dynamites at the OZ Stadium on Sunday.
The win was game two in the third round of the Open Canada Cup following a 2-1 triumph by St. Catharines Roma Wolves over London City at the Cove Road ground in London on Friday.
Mponda’s goal came following a tense scoreless 90-minute struggle that, although the Wizards had a decided edge in the second half, could easily have gone the other way.
A gallant squad from Quebec fought desperately to gain victory over the defending Canada Cup and CPSL champions. Laval goalkeeper Nicolas Pinto was particularly outstanding in keeping the Wizards off the scoresheet in the second half.

Any score from the Kanata-Supra game???

[u]Third Round - Matches 3-5</u>
[u]Monday, August 4</u>
[:0][:0] Kanata 1 Toronto Supra 0 [:0][:0] (at Vaughan)
From the CPSL site:
‘WHAT A GREAT PERFORMANCE’: KANATA’S BUSBY
Kanata shook an unbeaten Toronto Supra brimming with confidence following an impressive run of nine unbeaten games going back to the opening game on May 29. Pavel Cancura scored the winner for the Capital Region team at the 86th minute mark when he found the top right hand corner of the net out of the reach of Supra ‘keeper Michael Silva. Kanata is a member of the Ottawa Carleton Soccer League Second Division, presently sitting in third spot bidding for the top.
Hubert Busby Jr., a former pro goalkeeper in England and North America and the technical director of the 4,300-player strong Kanata Soccer Club and at the game as an advisor, was full of praise for coach Aldo Popazzi and the Kanata squad following the game.
“What a great performance—they played their socks off and never, ever let up the entire 90 minutes, they were just great,” he said.
Metro 5 Vaughan 3 (at Vaughan)
From the CPSL site:
LIONS UP 3-0 AFTER JUST NINE MINUTES, WIN 5-3
Metro Lions, playing under new head coach Goran Miscevic and Blagoje Bratic, looked powerful in jumping to a 3-0 lead in just nine minutes on goals by Hayden Fitzwilliams (3 minutes), Craig Patton (6 minutes) and Michael Levkov (9 minutes) in their win over Vaughan Sun Devils. Sun Devils appeared shell shocked by the sudden onslaught, but came back at the 11th minute mark on a goal by midfielder Fitzroy Powell for a 3-1 half-time score.
Patton scored his second goal and number four for Lions three minutes after the interval for a 4-1 lead, but Vaughan’s Paul Sinisi cut the score to 4-2 at the 66th minute mark. Mathew Palleschi scored for Sun Devils to make the game interesting at 4-3 with three minutes remaining, but Metro Lions increased their lead, 5-3 on a goal by Craig Patton, his third of the match.
Durham 3 AEK London 0 (at Vaughan)
From the CPSL site:
FLAMES BLANK AEK LONDON
Durham Flames belied their poor league performance of eight league defeats in succession and nine of 10 games played with a much welcome 3-0 convincing win over AEK London, a strong amateur team on top of the Western Ontario Soccer League (WOSL). The team from Southwestern Ontario has been a real success story since Tom Kouzounas, 34, with his brother and cousin took over the original Greek Olympians to move up from the third division to the Premier Division in that part of the province.
Des Humphrey with two goals (35 and 93 minutes) and Jahmo Welch (81 minutes) were the Flames’ scorers.

Result of the Canada Open Cup match played Monday August 4th, 2003 between Toronto Supra and Kanata at Dufferin District in Vaughan at 3:00pm.
80 min...Kanata Allan Popazzi hops around on edge of Supra box and quick chip hits hand of defender Garvin Houston (?) in box. Referee Yahkov Keimach calls Penalty kick.
81 min...Kanata Allan Popazzi rolls Penalty kick to left corner of net. Supra goalie Michael Silva dives to push ball wide left for cornerkick.
86 min...Kanata Pavel Cancura GOAL...Kanata Gabriel Maneiro crosses from right and Cancura tips in 5 yard header into top left corner of net.
Final Score:.........Toronto Supra.........0.................Kanata...........1 ....
Attendance started at about 30 on this very hot, humid afternoon. By the end of the game it may have been close to 100 as the next game scheduled was Glen Shields Sun Devils against Metro Lions.
Toronto Supra had plenty of chances to score but couldn't put the ball away. Kanata goalie Anariy Sckurek earned the shutout without having to be spectacular. Kanata scored on one of their few second half chances. The first freekicks they took with their elaborate plays were still mainly blasted into the Supra players wall.
I'd never seen Kanata before but they looked very familiar. Their hard to read yellow numbers on white shirts also had the name Wizards on their shoulders. Hey these are vintage Ottawa Wizards uniforms! Some of the players were familiar too as playing for the Wizards in 2002. Often injured Russell Shaw now plays full games with this team. Much travelled Keith Moore is a midfielder on the team. Allan Popazzi also played with the Wizards last year. "Technical director" Hubert Busby Jr is the coach of the Ottawa Wizards and they are still the favourites to win the Open Cup so these teams may end of meeting before the tourneys over.
News bombshell is that Ottawa Wizards will withdraw from the tournament if the league let six teams (instead of the promised five) into the final weekend of competition. A meeting will be held next week to determine the host for the finals. If the Wizards somehow only have to play two games to win the Cup (like a first place team in CFL football) I think they will stay. The glory of winning the Open Cup is great and the $10000 prize would help out any team.
I was selfishly hoping for 'no overtime' as I wanted to drive off for the Toronto Lynx A-League game. I missed the second game of Metro Lions beating Vaughan Sun Devils 5-3 but got in time to see the last 60 minutes of Durham Flames beating non-CPSL team London AEK 3-0. The score was in doubt until two late goals gave the Flames some breathing room.

Good article by Martin Clearly. Most of the article is about Kanata Soccer Post and the fantastic season they have had this year.
Apparently Kanata Soccer Post will only take 15 players to the Open Cup finals this weekend in London.
[u]Wildcard Match - Friday, August 29</u>
London 4 Durham 1
From the CPSL site:
London City handed Durham Flames a resounding 4-1 defeat in the wild card game of the Open Canada Cup played on City’s home ground of Cove Road Friday.
It was the first of four Open Canada Cup games this weekend to decide the cup winner in the final on Monday afternoon, a 3.45 pm kickoff.
London City move to the semi-finals and will meet a hot Kanata team, the only amateur team to survive from the original eight entered in May.
Jahmo Welch opened the scoring for the Flames at the 25th minute mark, but London replied with four goals, starting with a strike five minutes from the interval by Andrew Loague who took a perfect pass from Gentjan Dervishi.
Ermal Murataj scored his first of the season for London City, the goal coming five minutes after half-time and in a goalmouth scramble Loague scored his second of the night and fourth of season to make it 3-1 at the 59th minute mark.
Eris Tafaj made it 4-1 with his seventh of the season at the 74th mark and all but assure London City a berth in the semi-final.
London City will now meet a hot Kanata team on Sunday afternoon.
The remaining games are:
Sun. Aug 31, 5:30 pm: Cove Road: SEMI-FINAL:
St. Catharines Wolves vs Metro Lions
Sun. Aug 31, 8:30 pm: Cove Road: SEMI-FINAL:
Kanata vs London City
Mon. Sep 1, 3:45 pm: Cove Road:
OPEN CANADA CUP FINAL
[u]Semifinals - Sunday, August 31</u>
Metro 3 St. Catharines 1
London 2 Kanata 0
From the CPSL site:
Metro Lions, a fledgling second year team in the Canadian Professional Soccer League and longstanding London City, each won their semi-final Open Canada Cup games Sunday and will square off in the final to be played at Cove Road on Labour Day
Lions defeated St. Catharines Wolves, 3-1, in the first of game of a semi-final double header and in the second game London City blanked Kanata, 2-0, a courageous amateur team near Ottawa and only survivor of nine amateur squads that chose to mix with the 13 pro CPSL teams when the competition kicked off on May 17.
Three of the four goals scored in the first semi-final came from penalty kicks in a physical, rough and tumble affair with untidy tackles that were costly to both teams.
Darryl Gomes of Metro Lions took advantage of his team’s two spot kicks and he made no mistake both times, the first after just six minutes and the second at the 82nd minute mark. They were Gomes’ sixth and seventh goals of the season.
Hayden Fitzwilliams also scored for Metro Lions at the 38th minute mark and it was Carlo Arghittu who struck for St. Catharines Wolves at the 57th minute mark.
Two substitutes off the London City bench proved to be highly productive for the Southwestern Ontario team, each scoring a goal in the 2-0 final result.
London’s Erik Elmauer took a pass from Eris Tafaj on his left to score the first and it was substitute Phil McDonald who scored the second City goal after a good passing play with Andrew Loague.
London City reached today’s semi-final following a decisive 4-1 win over Durham Flames on Friday.
The final game is set for a 3.45 pm kickoff at Cove Road in London, home of London City.

Result of the Monday September 1st, 2003 CPSL game between London City and Metro Lions played at Cove Road Field in London at 3:45pm. This was the Final of the Open Canada Cup.
30 min...London City Eris Tafaj GOAL...Tafaj receives ball in middle from right side and cuts around defender to shoot 15 yarder to right side of net beyond goalie Gregory Drakes.
1st half results...Lions had more shots on net but City scored one of their only two good chances.
52 min...Referee Sylviu Petrescu orders expulsion of a Lions official for touching the fourth official who came to get the Lions bench to order them to sit down after a call they didn't like which wasn't difficult because the player's bench is only two yards from the sideline.
79 min...City RED card...captain Tonino Commisso picks up his second Yellow card for a sliding tackle on Lions Hayden Fitzwilliams near center line. He got his first Yellow at the 8 minute mark for a near identical challenge.
84 min...Lions Craig Patton GOAL...Patton in goalmouth scramble pounds in 4 yarder past goalie Haidar Al-Shaibani.
2nd half results...Lions keep up the pressure and especially when playing with the man advantage.
1st Golden Goal Overtime (15 minutes) results...Lions dominate this extra period.
111 min...Referee orders the clearing of raised platform overlooking field by the fourth officials place for constant heckling of calls that didn't go City's way. About six guys were up there including two sons of London owner Harry Gauss. I was leaning under the television platform scaffold to keep my notes out of the rain within 10 yards of this incident.
112 min...City Gentian Devishi takes 45 yard freekick, City Marco Peeters gets shot from 10 yards and point blank rebound but can't lift ball over fallen goalie.
2nd Golden Goal Overtime (15 minutes) results...City comes out about equal in this period as they finally trade shots with the Lions in good end to end action.
Metro Lions looked good the whole game moving the ball around up the field but couldn't finish the plays with shots on target. The London goalie had more shots go wide or over the net than balls he actually had to stop. This has been the Lions problem this season in the league standings and the six games I've seen them play. It's the first time I've seen City this year.
Penalty Shootout (5 rounds).
1. Lions Kareem Reynolds low shot that's blocked by goalie diving right.
1. City Eris Tafaj GOAL...shot to right corner of net as goalie dives left.
2. Lions Jason Baker GOAL...takes long run up to ball but blasts to right side as goalie crumples in center of net.
2. City Gentian Dervishi GOAL...shot to right side as goalie dives left.
3. Lions Darryl Gomez shot pushed wide left by flying goalie.
3. City Erik Elmauer GOAL...blasts ball into low left corner beyond diving goalie who guessed correctly.
4. Lions Hayden Fitzwilliams GOAL...rolls ball to right side under diving goalie.
4. City Luan Jonuzi GOAL...rolls ball low to left side as goalie crumples in center of goal.
London City wins on Penalty kicks 4-2 in only four rounds.
Final Score:..........London City...........1 (aet)..............Metro Lions.........1 (aet)........City wins 4-2 on Penalties.
Attendance was about 225 on this overcast day with a light rain falling from the opening kickoff then getting worse in the second half but tapering off and restarting for the rest of the game.
The tournament MVP is announced as London City's John Medeiros (this was the only game of the weekend I saw being pinned Friday and Sunday watching the end of the A-League Toronto Lynx season). Stan Adamson and some woman presents the Open Canada Cup trophy to the City players. Harry Gauss is signalled by the players to come out of the press box and celebrate. He was quite choked up about winning the trophy which reminded me of one of the American football awards (Heisman trophy?) with the bronze player in motion. "This is for Omar" he said. (a player who had been injured earlier in the year). This was a tough weekend for City who had to win the wildcard game against Durham Flames on Friday night, beat the amateur team Kanata in the semi-final on Sunday and then play today's game a man down for the last 44 minutes of today's game.

Great report Robin. I would have liked to meet you. I saw you though as I went by you to the dressing room during the first half. The fans on the platform got booted cuz they thought they ref made a bad call on my goal which I headed over the goalie, but the linesman calling it offside. Who knows, I havent seen a replay but every fan in the park came up to me telling me I was robbed. *shrugs*
Anyways one small correction it was Justin Medeiros who was the MVP.
Here is a picture of what the trpohy looks like. I will get a better one later. My cameras battery was running out.
